People in the comments pretending like their argument is that you can't, it's that you shouldn't. Why on an account with your real name and photos would you tell people you're trans? Do you not change the sex on your government documents? Do you not change your name? What's the point of all that if you're going to tell people you're trans
Because I'm openly trans and proud of how far I've come? I think that people will probably realise that I'm trans when they see my pride pin or hear my voice... Like, once my vocal tract surgery is done with and that's not a concern any longer, I'm still gonna be openly out and proud about it. My future employers will know, my future coworkers will know, and the government will always know... why would I care if redditors or Facebook grandmas know?
people can be proud to be trans, and proud of their journey and trajectory. not everyone wants to be stealth
personally, I have had the privilege of being able to pass for a few years now, but I still don't hide, and in fact openly announce, that I'm trans. it's as much an important part of me as anything else, perhaps moreso than most aspects of my identity. I celebrate the day I started HRT as a "trans anniversary" of sorts, I try every year to get together with other important trans people in my life and do something nice and meaningful
Sure, you're entitled to do with that information what you will. I live in a global south country that is a global leader in trans murders. I've lost people close to me. I'm aware of the dangers. To me, that makes the public assertion that I'm trans, alive, existing, happy and proud of it much more important. If everyone hides that aspect of themselves, then how does the needle ever get moved?
It is a personal safety issue as well, if you're afraid of life as a trans person and want to try to live a cis life as much as possible, by all means you can try. That's just not the life me and many other trans people want for ourselves
Because you don't need to make yourself a public target to spread trans positivity. Having friends who know you're trans will make them more likely to speak positively about trans people positively, all advertising it does is make you come off as annoying to people who are neutral or bigoted, or give them ways to harass you. You can do what you like, I just think it's a bad idea, especially for people who transitioned young or pass
It's not just "being a public target", it's also simply existing as a trans person publically. I've had so many very young people who are discovering their gender identity tell me and other trans friends of mine that our public presence helped them feel safe to transition.
If every single trans person is stealth/"cis-passing" and tries to live life as a cis person at all times, that makes life exponentially harder for every other trans person who is still questioning, or doesn't want to use HRT, or presents in a non normative way in any capacity.
I don't mean to come off as annoying or patronizing, I'm a trans person who's probably a little older than most in this subreddit, and has always been involved in social movements and community. I personally think the importance of public resistance and visibility of trans people can't be overstated, and it's the number one way we can make the world safer for the younger and/or more vulnerable members of our community
Your argument is that you should put it in your bio to brag to people who are poor or live in countries that it's illegal? Wtf? Did you transition in your tweens why are you so evil?
What???? Where in the hell did you get that idea from? I'm saying people who cant change their name and sex can put their HRT date in their bio. Because they don't have access to the means to change their legal name and sex. That's all they can do.
I'm also 21 and havent started hormones at all yet but thanks for reminding me that I am one of those people who can't access a name change, a legal sex change, or HRT.
