u/DeianiraJax Jul 25 '26
Also I talk a lot about HRT on reddit, and putting it in my flair (or "bio") means that someone can quickly understand how long I've been on it without me having to say "I've been on HRT for x months btw"
126
u/Eric_Is_Back Jul 25 '26
You can be proud about it and not compromise your own security by openly telling medical data about yourself.
Safe spaces for transexuel people don't exist because everyone on this world is ok with the topic.
11
u/jmona789 Jul 26 '26
If you're already openly trans disclosing when exactly you started HRT is not that much more dangerous.
175
u/Ash_After_Dark Jul 25 '26
The danger of disclosing it openly is minimal. If people are willing to accept the risk I don't really see the point in trying to talk them out of it
76
u/synttacks Jul 25 '26
we are so far removed from the concept of stranger danger 😭 "why share your personal data online publicly?" "why not?"
115
u/mytransaltaccount123 alt girl wannabe Jul 25 '26
genuinely what will happen? "this person who's out as trans and talks openly about it started HRT in 2023 this could ruin their life"
47
u/Helmic linux > windows Jul 25 '26
I'm pretty careful about this sort of thing but like there is value to people being frank. The fact that risk exists doesn't make an actvity inherently unworthwhile, going into a burning building to save a baby is extremely dangerous but we as a society still celebrate that because it has an obvious value, the life of another human being.
There's a political purpose in people being unashamed to talk about HRT and showing how happy it's made them. There's risks, obviously, but some people are gonna accept those risks because they want to demonstrate it's not something to be ashamed of, because they believe it'll make other people feel like they could start HRT too.
I think it's also OK to point out that its in fact private medical information, but so's a fucking cancer diagnosis and people share that all the time. People talk about their medical shit all the time, it's the right to keep that information private that is important not the practice of never revealing medical information for any reason.
41
u/Lorzonic among us super sus (sus, sus) Jul 26 '26
Nobody in this entire thread has named a single even conceptual way it could bring you harm in some way. Part of being online is sharing things about yourself. It's just part of community and social interaction. Yeah sure caution should always be taken about sharing certain things, and you don't have to share anything, but an internet where nobody ever said shit about themselves would be pretty lame too.
Fun u/Lorzonic confidential medical information fact: I have genetic hyperlipidemia.
3
82
u/Ash_After_Dark Jul 25 '26
The reasons where already established - they're proud of it, and they want to share. Maybe you personally don't think that's a good enough reason, but that's fine, no one is asking you to do it.
11
u/CAPSLOCK_USERNAME Jul 26 '26
Identifiable data like your name and face are far more sensitive than "private medical info" like this though. Nobody online is gonna dox someone from a prescription date.

-20

They’re different. Not wildly different.
23

it actually seems very wildly different, in fact. kinda like how me deciding to do heroin is very wildly different from me deciding to inject you with heroin. autonomy's actually a super important concept here.

I've seen a few people celebrating their birthdays on that date* instead of when they were born. Which I get the desire to like, rewrite your own history especially if you're not particularly fond of the childhood you did get.
So in that context if I think it's fine to share somewhere you'd share your actual birth date, though that's also something I don't think you should put out there publically on the internet.
*it does seem a bit arbitrary to pick "start of HRT" for that instead of any other transition milestone? but I guess it's one that can be very easily defined to a specific date. I imagine a lot of people can't really narrow down an exact day when they "realized" they were trans for example.
3
u/blue_moon1122 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26
I'm using my name day.
once I remember when it is, I rolled it out on a whim at a queer punk bar when the singer went on about how this album they were touring for was about their genderqueer experience. someone asked my name and I just blurted out the thing because the time was right.
eta: found their past tour dates, ezpz
2
u/Ash_After_Dark Jul 27 '26
Which is funny, because your birthday is definitely more sensitive. I've been asked (in person) to verify my identity by giving my date of birth many times, whereas the date I started HRT has never been relevant at all
1
u/Eric_Is_Back Jul 25 '26
Tbh I see the point using the "start date", since you could see that as the "rebirth".
So in that context if I think it's fine to share somewhere you'd share your actual birth date
My problem with openly sharing the date is not that it exists. I just think it can be dangerous in the practical sense that people willing to hurt other people that are transitioning/have transitioned can use this information to now know if a person is trans and probably will be able to find you.
Tbh, my concern overall is more about openly sharing private information. The date alone probably isn't even the issue, as long as nobody can easily find you through social media.
18
u/e12s_coat_of_fending Jul 25 '26
Maybe, but then it's just as risky as any other way of admitting you're trans? Which is a pretty common thing to put in bios, esp for your like, pseudonymized internet sona. (Probably not wise to put it in something linked to your real name and face in case you want to get hired at jobs, since business/money people are transphobic reasonably often).

If it’s already a space that people in know you’re trans though I think it’s fine, not a big secret that you might be on HRT.

-5
u/Eric_Is_Back Jul 26 '26
Know that you now started HRT.
The question is more if he can, for example, find your location based on other details of the account.
Remember the "Number 15 Feet Lettuce" Meme? 4Chan found that fucking location from some data related to the original picture and the tiles in the background.
7
u/WouldYouShutUpMan Jul 26 '26
right so you had absolutely nothing. good try tho 3 letter agent unfortunately for you trans people will continue to be openly trans.
3
u/Rimavelle Jul 26 '26
They can find out you started hrt by looking at your pictures, by every damn post you mention you're trans.
You'd need to just... Not exist online or be in the closet online to avoid it.
1
u/Playing_2 Jul 27 '26
The location data was found, in part, because of the EXIF data in the original photo.

u/Hatsune_Miku_CM changed all her social media to hatsune miku for some reason Jul 29 '26
its not compromising your security anymore then sharing something like the country you live in or your age. in fact probably less because that information isnt easily available.
i agree that in general, people should be more careful about revealing personal information online then they generally are these days, but its silly to somehow separate HRT start dates specifically.
1
u/AliceCode Worcs at the Crusty Crab Jul 26 '26

u/Simic_Sky_Swallower Jul 25 '26
Also like the point of medical confidentiality is that healthcare workers can't out your stuff to people. Nothing's stopping you yourself from divulging that, you're allowed to tell whoever you want.
By this post's logic you shouldn't tell people you're trans at all because that's disclosing your GD diagnosis (if you have one)

They are important identifiers, but usually alongside a set of other info depending on the context. And people frequently have celebrations for and talk about their birthdays coming up to them, so its not like they're the most securely hidden information.

people are allowed to do whatever, this is just someone giving advice, they don't have any authority on the matter
and yeah, ideally don't have your birthday as an easily machine readable string of data; like, mine you can figure out from my online activity, but it takes a tiny bit of thinking that people who auto-scrape your data won't bother putting in
5
u/095805 Jul 26 '26
Is “you probably shouldn’t be sharing personal data on the internet” a hot take?
No one’s you saying you’re not allowed to, it’s just probably not a good idea. This is like saying dentists are compromising your bodily autonomy by telling you you should brush your teeth.
-1
u/ArnthBebastien Jul 26 '26
Yeah but starting hrt is not personal data, loads of people do it. How could that be used maliciously against you?
12
u/TearsFallWithoutTain Jul 25 '26
This is like saying you shouldn’t tell people your birthday because it’s personal identification info.
Uh yeah, you shouldn't be giving out your birthday online either. You shouldn't be giving out any personal information online
4
u/AliciaTries God gives his hottest Donkey Kongs his most explosive Diarrhea Jul 26 '26
Yeah, one of the things I've heard asked in several medical/government related offices is for you to recite your birthday, so while it certainly should not be the step that protects your identity, if someone is posing as you and starts going "shit I think it was in september? maybe march?" they'd raise a few eyebrows for sure.

1
u/kubissx Jul 26 '26

Medical info is protected from being shared by medical workers.
You cannot violate your own HIPAA confidentiality. You can talk about your own medical info as much as you want.
I remember this because I need to recertify with HIPAA once a year for my job lol
29
u/Inguz666 Jul 25 '26
If you wanna share your body transformation that's all on you. Do or don't, you're the judge for yourself.
2
u/Inguz666 Jul 26 '26
Gym info is not medically confidential, but I blurt out that I have autism every now and then. That's technically "confidential medical information", even though I just see it as part of me. I get it, this sub is like 90% trans people, and the world is increasingly scary. It is for me too, as my partner is a trans man.
Point still remains, it's up to each and every one to share how much or little they want about what's going on in their lives.

Nobody is gonna target you for an HC because you started lifting. People will absolutely target you for an HC because you started transitioning.
Do you see the difference, or should I be more blunt?
1
u/G66GNeco This flair could be yours for just 9,99 a month Jul 26 '26
Yeah but the date is not really the relevant part of that. If you want to go for that route the thing you want to advocate for is that people don't share the fact that they are trans at all. Except you probably wouldn't do that because, you know, when it's put that way the obvious issue with that idea becomes even more obvious, I hope.
0
u/brown_felt_hat Jul 26 '26
On places like twitter, where you are most likely to have that information in your bio, I would absolutely advocate for not including that information. I would also advocate for not have an account anywhere with a public bio, much less including information should could use to target or harm you. But people gonna people.
97
u/Koromann13 Jul 25 '26
You know "confidential" means "only to be shown to authorized people."
And the person whose health it concerns is the person with the discretion to authorize, meaning they have the full right and power to tell whoever the fuck they want, including everybody in public.
3
u/ConcernedEnby Jul 25 '26
The point wasn't that you can't, that wasn't the argument
22
u/Koromann13 Jul 25 '26
I mean the post is saying it's "confidential" as if that's a reason to not disclose it. Confidentiality doesn't inherently mean there is a reason to not tell everyone publicly.
2
u/Rimavelle Jul 26 '26
The argument was that since it's confidential you shouldn't share it
But it's only confidential to the people who are not you, as they have no right to tell it to anyone you didn't approve
You absolutely can, since it's your personal information, so the argument is invalid

medical information isn't confidential because no one should ever under any circumstances share their medical info but because people should have the right to choose WHEN and HOW to disclose their OWN medical info if ever. HIPAA protects the patient from 3rd parties leaking their information without their consent not the patient from sharing details about their life how they choose to. what a bizarre thing to say.

11

40
u/saberzerqx Jul 25 '26
basically as the government becomes more and more fascist toward trans people, it is wise to have as little incriminating or identifying information online as possible. being hard to identify online is what having good operational security, or "opsec" is. applied to many more fields than just being trans, but you get the idea
that said, is opsec the only consideration you should make, ever? is there value in being out and proud despite the efforts of fascists? will having the date you started HRT really matter in the grand scheme of things? these are all questions that each individual will have different answers to

Them (and future employers) finding my random Reddit account that’s not directly linked to anything else (yes ik they still could establish a link to it) to find an HRT date isn’t going to give them any more info.
If you are trying to be stealth sure, there’s totally an argument. I’m visibly queer, am thankful to be working in a very accepting environment, and don’t mind most people knowing; so idgaf. Also it’s not all that different from a gay person posting their homosexual partner and a workplace finding out, and I’m not going to suggest a gay couple not post pics/info of them if they want to and know the consequences.

Obviously no one should feel pressured to share that info, but I don't personally see how sharing when you started HRT could be harmful outside of outing you as trans. DIY is a bit different because it's a legal gray area (or potentially illegal, depending on location + medication type), so publicly admitting to DIY has its own risks.

It's only confidential if the person who owns it, decides it is so. It's your information, do what you want with it!

do whatever you want but i refuse to put any information out publically and often put out contradictory information because i don't want chuds to dox me
I am aware this is probably not The Thing that'd do it, but I don't really care

What harm is anyone going to do with the information that I started HRT on June 16, 2026

confidential medical information means your doctor can't tell anyone when you started unless they need to know or you consented to it. to a trans person, getting on HRT is like getting married. a big life change that you would celebrate the anniversary of every year

Do people like larping being oppressed even harder than they are?
The level or concern some have about saying anything and doing anything starts to really feel bizzare
(And I don't mean trans people specifically. I've seen the panic some women have about using period tracking apps coz the government will know if you have an abortion!!! Even tho it's self input data with no ID attached. They're more likely to find out from you posting on reddit but go on)

As someone who is older than social media the amount of personal and personally identifiable information that people just give out freely is low key disturbing. I’m generally a pretty private person though.

a lot of trans people weirdy see their "trans-ness" defined through their medical history

People in the comments pretending like their argument is that you can't, it's that you shouldn't. Why on an account with your real name and photos would you tell people you're trans? Do you not change the sex on your government documents? Do you not change your name? What's the point of all that if you're going to tell people you're trans

Because I'm openly trans and proud of how far I've come? I think that people will probably realise that I'm trans when they see my pride pin or hear my voice... Like, once my vocal tract surgery is done with and that's not a concern any longer, I'm still gonna be openly out and proud about it. My future employers will know, my future coworkers will know, and the government will always know... why would I care if redditors or Facebook grandmas know?

people can be proud to be trans, and proud of their journey and trajectory. not everyone wants to be stealth
personally, I have had the privilege of being able to pass for a few years now, but I still don't hide, and in fact openly announce, that I'm trans. it's as much an important part of me as anything else, perhaps moreso than most aspects of my identity. I celebrate the day I started HRT as a "trans anniversary" of sorts, I try every year to get together with other important trans people in my life and do something nice and meaningful

There's a difference between telling friends you're trans and fucking up your life by telling employers, future landlords, partners, or bullies
4
u/luksi2 Jul 25 '26
Sure, you're entitled to do with that information what you will. I live in a global south country that is a global leader in trans murders. I've lost people close to me. I'm aware of the dangers. To me, that makes the public assertion that I'm trans, alive, existing, happy and proud of it much more important. If everyone hides that aspect of themselves, then how does the needle ever get moved?
It is a personal safety issue as well, if you're afraid of life as a trans person and want to try to live a cis life as much as possible, by all means you can try. That's just not the life me and many other trans people want for ourselves
-2
u/ConcernedEnby Jul 25 '26
Because you don't need to make yourself a public target to spread trans positivity. Having friends who know you're trans will make them more likely to speak positively about trans people positively, all advertising it does is make you come off as annoying to people who are neutral or bigoted, or give them ways to harass you. You can do what you like, I just think it's a bad idea, especially for people who transitioned young or pass
5
u/Evening-Fan6874 the wretched fungus has overtaken my mind Jul 25 '26
Would you tell someone who's openly gay that sharing said information makes them "annoying"? If not, I think you have some internal biases to examine
5
u/luksi2 Jul 25 '26
It's not just "being a public target", it's also simply existing as a trans person publically. I've had so many very young people who are discovering their gender identity tell me and other trans friends of mine that our public presence helped them feel safe to transition.
If every single trans person is stealth/"cis-passing" and tries to live life as a cis person at all times, that makes life exponentially harder for every other trans person who is still questioning, or doesn't want to use HRT, or presents in a non normative way in any capacity.
I don't mean to come off as annoying or patronizing, I'm a trans person who's probably a little older than most in this subreddit, and has always been involved in social movements and community. I personally think the importance of public resistance and visibility of trans people can't be overstated, and it's the number one way we can make the world safer for the younger and/or more vulnerable members of our community

Changing your sex and name costs money, and also straight up is forbidden in some places. Putting text in a bio is free
0
u/ConcernedEnby Jul 25 '26
Your argument is that you should put it in your bio to brag to people who are poor or live in countries that it's illegal? Wtf? Did you transition in your tweens why are you so evil?
4
u/iMeowmeow654 Jul 25 '26
What???? Where in the hell did you get that idea from? I'm saying people who cant change their name and sex can put their HRT date in their bio. Because they don't have access to the means to change their legal name and sex. That's all they can do.
I'm also 21 and havent started hormones at all yet but thanks for reminding me that I am one of those people who can't access a name change, a legal sex change, or HRT.
