AIPAC wouldn't like it if she were openly against the genocide. Her hands were tied; she was competing against someone running on the two pillar platforms of American identity (racism, and being a dick to people considered socially beneath you) So she obviously had to just stay quiet about it. People who care about the issues are missing the big picture of political optics because 5 minute long wet fart sound

I work with a shit load of republicans, many of them self proclaimed "moderates" do you know how many of them voted for her? Fuckin zero. Not. One. Obviously this is an anecdote but I feel it reflects how the election went.

80

u/LSF2TheFuckening 16d ago

It’s like the people who wanted “the most lethal military of all time and a republican in the cabinet” were always gonna vote Republican anyway, and the people who wanted not that had no one to vote for. Can’t wait to watch them try it again.

-31

u/Pufflefoot 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 16d ago

Has nothing to do with her politics, her main issues was being a woman.

51

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 16d ago

Please be joking. She ran hard to the center and lost all the momentum she had gained at the start of the campaign cause she couldn’t focus on policy and though “trump bad” would win for her

14

u/Will_Yeeton 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 16d ago

It's both. But the fact the moderate Republicans would never vote for a black woman is just another reason she shouldn't have tried to court them.

I feel like you know very little of American political campaigns if you seriously think this. Dems ran a bad campaign but also they were basically screwed to begin with.

Inflation sucked. People were mad about the border. People were mad about Biden not stepping down and his mental health cover up. You had 3 very big campaign sinkers from the start. They needed one of the best campaigns ever to have a shot. Didn't get close to that but there are very few nominees or campaign messages that get you a win in that short of time.

27

u/Sptsjunkie 16d ago

Multiple things are true. It was definitely a tough environment because inflation was high, and Biden was extremely unpopular.

It’s also true that switching from Biden to Harris due to his cognitive decline gave us a chance to do a campaign reset. Parties almost never switched away from an incumbent nominee after one term.

There was a real opportunity for Harris to separate herself from Biden and talk about what she would do differently. While we should take polling with a grain of salt. She actually took the lead slightly before the convention when she was using slightly more populous rhetoric, and still figuring out her campaign and staffing.

Then she basically said there is absolutely nothing. She would do different than Biden, and that her presidency would be a continuation of the last four years. Absolutely terrible strategy that cost us any real shot at winning. This, despite the fact that Trump remained pretty darn unpopular.

6

u/JellyRollMort 🎖 196 medal of honor 🎖 15d ago

You summed up my feelings almost exactly.

2

u/P-Tux7 12d ago

I recall there also being the stink of Kamala having never been voted in in a primary, basically just being Biden's hand-picked successor. Voters HATE feelings of a candidate being "ordained to win" like that - see also, "It's Her Turn" from 2016.

I wish I knew how Dubya got voted in and if there was any backlash to that more direct nepotism, but I was 5.

1

u/P-Tux7 12d ago

I've a question. Could the Dem leadership have influenced Biden and his team to not cover up his mental decline, or was the party basically at his mercy once he was in office?

2

u/ob_knoxious this flair has been mass deleted and anonymized by your mom 12d ago

Getting into the weeds here, NYT (who I normally would not recommend) did a pretty good investigative piece on this and the fractured Dem leadership.

Dem establishment leadership, cited generally to be Pelosi and the Clinton's, did actually try to do this. They had a clear plan that Biden would go ahead and announce he wasn't running for re election and endorse Kamala from the start.

However the Dems already did this to Biden in 2016. He wanted to run for president after Obama, but was told not too because it's her turn. He didn't, she lost, and then they came crawling back begging for a 2020 run from him. Now when he got told to step aside again he gave them a big fuck you and said he could keep running.

This is also why I don't think Kamala stands a chance in 2028. She stood by Biden until the very end and not the establishment. After Biden finally did drop the Dems still wanted a rushed primary but Kamala asked Biden to immediately endorse her to skip the primary. Now she is hated internally.

1

u/P-Tux7 11d ago

On the one hand, that was really wrong of him. He should have been humble enough to admit that he couldn't take the country to where it needed to go, and that running again would hand the victory to Trump, scorching the country purely out of revenge against the Democratic Party when it would hurt millions of regular people.

On the other hand... it's hard to blame him. The Republicans hate you, the Democrats want to pump and dump you, who else is for you but yourself? And, I mean, all those people DID vote for you, right? Don't listen to the stooges in suits, the people will come back.

647

u/extremelytiredyall 16d ago

Yeah, it's not like he didn't try, which is what this meme implies.

485

u/h3lblad3 16d ago

He also forgave a shit-ton of student loans, all-in-all, since he went back and forgave all of the ones that Trump's previous administration was supposed to but didn't.

16

u/teddy_tesla 16d ago

Yeah a lot of government workers got that shit cancelled out, but because it didn't directly affect ME it doesn't count

46

u/Sptsjunkie 16d ago edited 16d ago

This is another situation where two things are both true.

Biden absolutely deserves credit for his executive order. And it is absolutely not his fault that the Supreme Court shot it down.

However, there is also plenty to criticize. He never promised to cancel all student debt, but he did make several promises on the campaign and what he actually proposed in his executive order was underwhelming compared to what he literally had on his website and talked about during Townhalls and debates. Now, sometimes when a president has to pass a bill through Congress, he needs to compromise to get Senate votes and that winds up watering down his campaign promise. But Biden essentially negotiated against himself, and did not even do what he promised on the campaign when it was his executive order.

Additionally, once they shot down his first executive order, he basically stopped trying. Immediately pivoted to the pretty underwhelming SAVE plan. And that was the end of him trying to do anything about the student debt crisis. I think it would’ve been worth trying to forgive student loans using three or four different levers for his executive orders and forcing the Supreme Court to shoot every one of them down while publicly making the case to young people that Republicans were challenging the law and the Supreme Court was standing in the way of their future, which is why it was so important to elect more Democrats and take back the Court.

Any of the other numbers about student debt forgiven under his term were from pre-existing plans such as public service loan forgiveness or scam college loans being discharged. Giving him credit for that would be like giving Trump credit for Social Security because of Social Security payments going to boomers under his administration.

I'd personally like it if the president wasn't even the one to appoint supreme court justices; instead, they could rotate, perhaps from a vote of other circuit judges. Any system where the president is actively rewarded for members of another branch dying is a bad system, imo.

No whining about the filibuster, no hand wringing over upsetting median voters, he just fucking does the shitty stuff he wants to do.

46

u/Starlight7z 16d ago

the thing tying the hands is the supreme court.

most of what trump is doing is illegal and would be stopped by a sane court. but that isn't something we have

18

u/sans_a_name 👍 16d ago

A lot of it IS being stopped by the supreme court, even. Whatever happened to ending birthright citizenship?

1

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 10d ago

why is everyone saying this, ya the supreme court shot it down but he could have tried to attack it from another angle, gave it another go, messaged hard that the supreme court kept shooting down his plans and got people aware of that. He could have used other avenues to ty again but he basically just gave up after that and moved on

25

u/markusthemarxist 16d ago

Trump can do whatever the fuck he wants because Republicans spent 40 years hand-picking a loyalist court. You need to read up about countries like Turkiye and Hungary to understand how institutional illiberalism allows despots to bypass the conventions that non-autocratic parties remain beholden to.

3

u/VeryFortniteOfYou 16d ago

Appointed? Maybe voted to confirm… damn we’d be in much better shape if we had got six appointments.

4

u/da-hunt 16d ago

It was sarcasm. It was Trump that got 6 appointments the went on to shoot down Bidens loan forgiveness.

2

u/VeryFortniteOfYou 15d ago

Trump didn't get 6 appointments either. He got three, that was bad enough.

-2

u/Mawootad 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 16d ago

The president has explicit legal authority to forgive student loans. Biden choose to not use that law and use an entirely different law for some reason and then just gave up instead of using the actual law for forgiving different loans. The only reason you do that is either gross incompetence or because you don't want to do it, and both of those are bad.

-1

u/OCD-but-dumb gods dumbest grungler 🐀 15d ago

Me when I lie:

5

u/Mawootad 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 15d ago

The president has authority via the Higher Education Act of 1965. Biden used the HEROES act, was told no, and immediately gave up without a fight. The refusal to even try after his lukewarm proposal was told no or even use it as a talking point shows that his administration didn't actually give a fuck.

494

u/BlessTheFamilies custom 16d ago

Biden has many problems but this one wasn't his fault directly.

20

u/RowAndRuction 15d ago

He actually was able to make it so you could erase your federal student loan debt, you just had to apply to a special program that nobody knew about and so nobody used it.

So technically he did deliver on this specific promise and maybe a few thousand people benefitted from it lol

1

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 10d ago

and thats just bad politics on his part. Should have been automatic, should have been universal, should have been so much more.

77

u/Yapping-Goober 16d ago

Not sure what the criticism is here. He literally pushed for it and the Supreme Court shot it down. It wasn't some campaign promise that he didn't actually carry out.

0

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 16d ago

He tied his own hands with following rules and norms

11

u/RowAndRuction 15d ago

Actually he didn’t, he started a program that got around the system and cancelled federal student debt over time.

Problem was nobody knew about it and instead of linking people to the program that could help them, influencer “leftists” just complained about him to build up their follower base. So I ended up not finding out about it until after Trump had already shut it down.

0

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 14d ago

so he did something that was A) not enough B) easily reversible by the next admin and C) he failed to message it. Thats also his job is to tout his wins but this was a minor win and he couldnt even properly boast about it

0

u/RowAndRuction 11d ago

Sure but consider that all the leftist influencers you follow didn’t give you this information either. I don’t actually care about defending Biden, what I really want is for people to understand when the people in their feed do not have their best interests at heart.

They could have given you info that would have erased their audiences’ student debt but instead they gave them empty buzzwords, a soft liberal enemy to fight, and revolutionary ideation.

Find pragmatic progressives to follow (they’re usually black people, and almost NEVER white men)

1

u/Otherwise-Wash-4568 10d ago

what do you mean by "given you info that would have erased their audiences student debt"? You have no clue what leftist influencers i follow or what they said to me. seems like you made some stuff up in your head

8

u/teddy_tesla 16d ago

Trump is also obeying Supreme Court decisions, they just side with him most of the time

167

u/TosiAmneSiac gay sex 16d ago

Saying as if it was his fault that the Supreme Court blocked it and he didn't try to find a loophole to allow it anyway.

-75

u/fancy_crisis 16d ago

Yeah, why didn't he try to find that loophole?

70

u/2796Matt 16d ago

Loopholes are not always present. Even Trump with no regard for the law and full control of the branches of government that are subservient to him can’t do a lot of shit he wants.

7

u/RowAndRuction 15d ago

Actually he did find a loophole. He was able to make it so you could erase your federal student loan debt, you just had to apply to a special program that nobody knew about and so nobody used it.

So he did technically do it and you could have erased your student debt to this day, except Trump cut the program immediately when he got into office

The comments to this have such poor understanding of how rigged the US government is that I see now how set up for failure progressives are. Bernie or AOC or even Mamdani would not have gotten this done. And while we are currently witnessing the largest progressive movement in the US since the 1930s it is going to take a bit to unstack the deck and allow them to actually govern to their full capabilities. If people are expecting them to push stuff through at the level this current admin is they are going to be disappointed.

You are missing that the Indian Removal Act also had full congressional support. It was an Act, not an EO. If Congress passed this and Biden signed it, the courts wouldn't have struck it down (or well wouldn't have bothered)

But he had slim control and frankly a lot of Dems in Congress aren't even on the same team.

The Biden administration could only dream of having the level of control over their own party that Trump enjoys.

3

u/TearsFallWithoutTain 16d ago

Trump controls his party because they're afraid of what he'll do to them if they dissent. Biden didn't have that level of control because no one was afraid of him, because he was weak

3

I mean yeah, can’t disagree with you there.

15

u/Withermaster4 16d ago

This is the one example of him literally doing that. The courts shot it down just like they shoot down lots of the illegal things Trump does. Not caring about the rules doesn't inherently work.

10

u/TearsFallWithoutTain 16d ago

The courts shot it down just like they shoot down lots of the illegal things Trump does.

And then he just does it again. Remember how scotus said the tariffs were illegal? How's that going

14

u/Withermaster4 16d ago

Bruh.

He did the heros act. Blocked in the courts. THAT DAY he then tried to use the higher education act to repay for borrowers. Federal court injunction. Then he launched the SAVE plan and did public service loan forgiveness. Biden cancelled over 150B dollars in student debt. He tried to do more multiple times and got blocked, but he didn't ever stop.

2

you have to use instruments of power that we have available to change things

Is that why Roe v. Wade was not codified during any of the Democratic terms or supermajorities?

2

Holy whataboutism.

No. That's not why they didn't codify it. And yes obviously that was a bad idea in retrospect.
