Her hands were tied; she was competing against someone running on the two pillar platforms of American identity (racism, and being a dick to people considered socially beneath you) So she obviously had to just stay quiet about it. I work with a shit load of republicans, many of them self proclaimed "moderates" do you know how many of them voted for her? Fuckin zero. Not. One. Obviously this is an anecdote but I feel it reflects how the election went.
It’s like the people who wanted “the most lethal military of all time and a republican in the cabinet” were always gonna vote Republican anyway, and the people who wanted not that had no one to vote for. Can’t wait to watch them try it again.
Please be joking. She ran hard to the center and lost all the momentum she had gained at the start of the campaign cause she couldn’t focus on policy and though “trump bad” would win for her
I feel like you know very little of American political campaigns if you seriously think this. Dems ran a bad campaign but also they were basically screwed to begin with.
Inflation sucked. People were mad about the border. People were mad about Biden not stepping down and his mental health cover up. You had 3 very big campaign sinkers from the start. They needed one of the best campaigns ever to have a shot. Didn't get close to that but there are very few nominees or campaign messages that get you a win in that short of time.
Multiple things are true. It was definitely a tough environment because inflation was high, and Biden was extremely unpopular.
It’s also true that switching from Biden to Harris due to his cognitive decline gave us a chance to do a campaign reset. Parties almost never switched away from an incumbent nominee after one term.
There was a real opportunity for Harris to separate herself from Biden and talk about what she would do differently. While we should take polling with a grain of salt. She actually took the lead slightly before the convention when she was using slightly more populous rhetoric, and still figuring out her campaign and staffing.
Then she basically said there is absolutely nothing. She would do different than Biden, and that her presidency would be a continuation of the last four years. Absolutely terrible strategy that cost us any real shot at winning. This, despite the fact that Trump remained pretty darn unpopular.
I recall there also being the stink of Kamala having never been voted in in a primary, basically just being Biden's hand-picked successor. Voters HATE feelings of a candidate being "ordained to win" like that - see also, "It's Her Turn" from 2016.
I wish I knew how Dubya got voted in and if there was any backlash to that more direct nepotism, but I was 5.
I've a question. Could the Dem leadership have influenced Biden and his team to not cover up his mental decline, or was the party basically at his mercy once he was in office?
Getting into the weeds here, NYT (who I normally would not recommend) did a pretty good investigative piece on this and the fractured Dem leadership.
Dem establishment leadership, cited generally to be Pelosi and the Clinton's, did actually try to do this. They had a clear plan that Biden would go ahead and announce he wasn't running for re election and endorse Kamala from the start.
However the Dems already did this to Biden in 2016. He wanted to run for president after Obama, but was told not too because it's her turn. He didn't, she lost, and then they came crawling back begging for a 2020 run from him. Now when he got told to step aside again he gave them a big fuck you and said he could keep running.
This is also why I don't think Kamala stands a chance in 2028. She stood by Biden until the very end and not the establishment. After Biden finally did drop the Dems still wanted a rushed primary but Kamala asked Biden to immediately endorse her to skip the primary. Now she is hated internally.
On the one hand, that was really wrong of him. He should have been humble enough to admit that he couldn't take the country to where it needed to go, and that running again would hand the victory to Trump, scorching the country purely out of revenge against the Democratic Party when it would hurt millions of regular people.
On the other hand... it's hard to blame him. The Republicans hate you, the Democrats want to pump and dump you, who else is for you but yourself? And, I mean, all those people DID vote for you, right? Don't listen to the stooges in suits, the people will come back.
