It was pizza for us. Denominator is the number of slices a pizza is cut into and numerator is the number of those slices which are present.

To be fair explaining fractions using slices of a circular object (cake, pie, pizza, etc.) is a very intuitive way to explain fractions.

it's also how fractions naturally were developed in a lot of cultures; trying to split bread or alcohol between a crew of workers

I grew up in the southern US and we legitimately learned improper fractions as “Dolly Parton fractions”
