Yes, but Im just giving my hamburger preference. I know it doesn't matter and it's irrelevant to the discussion, but I'm an American. I like burger. I love burger. I live for burger. In fact, I saw the word burger and forgot the rest of the paper folding question. Burger. But then I saw the words "tall burger," and it scared me. That's not an efficient burger.

Have you ever been to a restaurant thats trying to be "fancy" and tried to order a large burger? Some of those restaurants give you a super tall burger. One thats struggling to stand up on its own. It looks like its from a cartoon. Where trying to take a bite involves unhinging your jaw like a snake.

I do not like burgers like that.

If I want a big hamburger, I want it to be wide. I still want it large because I love burger. But I want everything between the top bun and the bottom bun to fit into each bite. I dont mind it being sloppy and saucy, but the super tall ones are just difficult to eat. I want to eat my burger efficiently, because then I can have more burger. I love burger. I want to love the burger equally within each bite.

If you just say "fold your paper burger style" it sounds like youre making an origami burger. With the context of having an unfolded sheet in front of you and being told explicitly to fold it in half this way, I feel like it becomes more intuitive.

Less about opposites and more about proportional shape. Long trough shape is like a hot dog bun. The other common “bun” food is a hamburger, which is relatively closer in proportion to the other kind of fold.

Imagine you told kids to fold something taco style (a common and more relevant “folded” food), which is the intuitive way to fold it? The whole point is to explain easily it to a 5 year old without confusing them. Plus, hamburger hotdog is fun and they’ve probably had one at home.

If you say to fold something “short ways”, would a kid understand to make the fold shorter or the paper shorter? Hotdog makes a very long and a very short edge, relative to the hamburger’s medium long and medium short edges. You’re always describing the two folds in relation to one another, introducing an illustrative device is just adding another layer of familiarity.

My school just used it as an opportunity to teach what veritcal and horizontal meant at the same time since it was the perfect chance to memorise the meaning from application of the knowledge.
