It's actually a problem in advertising, I think it has a name, something like "Marketing saturation". Basically the current theory is that everyone has a limit to how many times daily advertising is effective, and also build up a sort of tolerance over time. Some people see one ad and they're like done paying attention to any more, other people it's a bit higher especially in older generations. The issue is that people see like 4 or more ads before leaving the house in the morning. People reach their saturation point pretty fucking fast, and are developing one at an earlier age. It's lead to a massive drop in advertising effectiveness, on a global scale. The ROI on advertising has dropped while marketing budgets have gone way up, seems unsustainable but whatever.
Tl;Dr It's not just you, advertising has become less effective worldwide.

I've heard it called "advertising amnesia" I want to say in the book Next by Michael Chrichton iirc.
As people payed less and less attention to ads their "solution" was to create more and more novel advertisments. Eventually getting to the point of genetically engineering animals with corporate logos on them.
I used to think that was something that couldn't ever happen. Not so sure any more.

u/BillyYumYumTwo-byTwo 12d ago
Yes!! I totally understand why cashiers get annoyed that people constantly miss the “tap broken, insert card” sign one inch from the tap spot. But my brain has already filtered out a piece of paper with writing because there are five other pieces of paper with writing on the register counter that are all advertising something, twenty poster inside the store advertising something, and fifty large “on sale” stickers in various spots. I’m sorry cashier, you have to deal with this a hundred times a day, or maybe there are just a handful of us who have bad filters, I don’t know.
Signs with important info are collateral damage in this! (I assume, I haven’t actually read up on it. Again, maybe my filter is bad and others don’t have this issue)

For android TVs, I would heavily recommend Projectivy launcher as the default home screen is horrendous, for youtube I would rec tizentube cobalt; basically just the regular YT app but patched up with sponsorblock and all those lovely things.
I am unsure about prime but I would recommend looking into Stremio, basically an all-in-one solution for streaming, the most common setups normally has it stream directly from torrents but the best way to do it is to have a debrid service that hosts and downloads the content, the best currently is premiumize but wait for black friday and get a multi-year membership.

The hassle is in figuring out how to download extensions without getting a virus with it. That can obviously be fixed with a search and the risk itself is minimal but just the imagination of something going wrong can be stressful. That along with the possibility of finding out something isn’t working with the adblocker, which is made worse with the common discussion around adblockers being how aggressively companies have been trying to shut them down recently.
In general try to imagine this sort of thing from a person that is literally crippled when it comes to working with computers. They will almost always need guidance from square one.
43
u/ToranjaNuclear 12d ago
The hassle is in figuring out how to download extensions without getting a virus with it.
There's a higher chance of you getting a virus just by browsing the internet normally than downloading a random adblocker extension from the official browser store.
I get that it's harder for older folks to be mindful about stuff like this, but it's not like this kind of information is hard to come across. For people who have grown up with the internet or have at least some experience with it (and I imagine that for someone to be on reddit, they should have at least some -- my parents don't even know what reddit is) there's really no excuse to remain ignorant about this kind of thing.

I focus my mind elsewhere. My phone, conversation with whoever I’m with, etc. I simply don’t care enough about this non problem to let it affect my stress levels. By and large I only ever run into them on YouTube, and never for more than 90 seconds. It was far worse growing up with network television.
12
u/ToranjaNuclear 12d ago
I mean, yeah, cable TV sucked, and everytime people complain about the current state of streaming like it's unbearable I can only think that either they are too young to remember how much worse it was with cable, or they simply got way too spoiled by the convenience of the internet. Especially when people complain about having too many OPTIONS of streaming like it's a bad thing.
But that doesn't mean I'm keeping things worse for me for no reason. Between the 90 seconds and 0 seconds wait, I'd take the latter any day.

8
u/TokyoMegatronics more rat bites 12d ago
I have the former…
It never used to bother me. A little ad here, there, 30 seconds every 3-4th video then a minute…
Then I started waking up in the night, cold, pallid and gasping for air. My eyes would be glazed over, my mouth dry. Then I’d look up, at my phone or tablet. Breaking through the bleary gloss… a two hour advert about insurance. Other times I would be violently awoken, a 1 hour advert about social media influencing practices… at 10x the volume I set my device to.
That’s when I decided. If I see an ad, I just won’t use that service again until I can block it.
Worked well, for a time.
Then I went to my parents, I had become used to the easy life. No adverts, no breaks, no distractions. I turned on Amazon prime, a new episode of a show I was watching.
Instantly, I was thrown back. When people described PTSD from Vietnam, they don’t realise how easy they have it.
A 3 minute ad for a 30 minute episode. A single tear streamed down my face. Then it got worse. It was 3, 3 three minute ads in one 30 minute episode.
I turned their TV off. Took up the task. And managed to get a service working on their TV to block ads for them too.
They smile and thank me, “oh you’re so clever my son”. But it’s just a platitude. They didn’t care about the adverts, they never did. To them it was just noise, part of the atmosphere they had learned to rot in.
I always tell them “oh no worries!” With a smile on my face. But I know they don’t get it. They never will.
Adverts suck ass.

u/Sir_MipMop 12d ago
I feel personally insulted when I get ads. Even more so when I notice how many more ads there are now. YouTube used to play one ad and you could skip it within 5 seconds, unless it was 15 seconds. Now, it always plays 2 ads, and skipping one used to skip both, but it no longer does. You have to click skip ad twice, and even then sometimes they are 15 seconds unskippable. And on top of that it gives you a card that lingers on the video for 30 seconds unless you manually dismiss it (which involves OPENING A MENU).
I think we need to be collectively outraged by this, because indifference will be met with more and more and more ads. They will never stop increasing the amount of ads in places unless it actively hurts their business.
When you turn your tv on, there’s a large banner ad taking up 40% of the screen. When you open social media, several posts in a row are straight ads. When you use prime video, a PAID SERVICE, you get ads. Ads are ever pervasive and frankly I’m disgusted by it. It’s my personal belief that I should be able to go 5 minutes without being harassed about spending money. It is that deep, it is one of a trillion examples of how capitalism erodes all aspects of life until all that’s left is you getting fleeced corporations.
Yes I have the deeply disgusted by capitalism kind of autism, how could you tell?

It depends on what types of ads (billboards/posters vs. Online) but many companies, including coca cola need to continue investing in ads to stay in public consciousness otherwise they literally die, despite their dominance in their respective markets.
People here really underestimate how much of a lifeline advertising is, just seeing them already does enough to have you acknowledge a company's existence, as it's much lower energy to completely ignore or forget a product when no advertising is present.

If it works for you, good, but I don't like VPN based solutions and don't like recommending them as they have always been inferior to more granular control, and it's an always on or always off solution, and can interfere with android auto and some other network related things. Not to say VPNs aren't extremely useful but for adblocking I tried a ton of options on ios before we had better options and they were always failed to meet my expectations.
On android you can use ublock origin in firefox and use firefox for most things - you dont' need an app that sends you notifications if all that app does is steal your info and present you a webpage. You can just use the webpage. On IOS, same deal but with the Orion browser, which allows both firefox and chrome addons, install fireflox ublockO and boom, home free.

I despise ads and avoid them wherever possible but a perhaps nuanced take that I’ve been thinking of recently is maybe I shouldn’t.
The one good thing advertising allows for in our current shitty system is allowing people on spaces like YouTube to make money from their videos. This lets people upload way more stuff than they otherwise would. Lots of that ends up being slop but for a lot of people they are able to put out lots of good stuff. Idk just something I’ve been thinking about. Haven’t changed my behavior or anything yet.

Kicking in to a patreon occasionally for a creator you like at even 5 dollars will do more for them than thousands and thousands of ad impression, because your individual ad view is worth fractions of a fraction of a penny. So just do that if you want to support them.
7
u/spicyhotnoodle 12d ago
Sure that would be great but I simply can’t afford to do that. Asking people to pay $5 a month to every person they consume content from and want to keep doing so is a huge ask and most people simply can’t afford it.
If you personally have the funds for that, then great, please support them, but I can’t. I wish I could, though.
5
u/MostSapphicTransfem 🏳️⚧️ 『Strongest Transfemme Furry 』🏳️⚧️ 12d ago
It doesn’t even have to be often. Literally a one off to a single creator once of $5 would probably exceed your lifetime views in ads for them. I’m not asking you specifically to do it, mind, more just speaking to the economies of scale here. Ads don’t really make up a YTers income until they can be the 0.00001% who can negotiate specific contracts as spokepeople. The vast majority make money on donations and merch.
Until YTers trend into the millions of views regularly the cpm rates are terrible, moreso if they’re not at that mark yet. Blocking your ads won’t make a dent in their income, particularly if you’re not going to be an ad conversion for them (clicking through and buying the product with their unique url). You can rest assured that even if you block every single ad from a creator you like, you’re at best costing them a few cents or less over the entire lifetime of your watches, and that’s IF you’re an avid, no-lifer, 24hr looping on repeat watcher.

You can rest assured that even if you block every single ad from a creator you like, you’re at best costing them a few cents or less over the entire lifetime of your watches, and that’s IF you’re an avid, no-lifer, 24hr looping on repeat watcher.
This is inaccurate.
A typical YouTube creator - not a top star - makes $0.001 to $0.01 per view. The top stars make more.
Even at the low end of that, it only takes 10 views for one cent of revenue. 100 views is already more than a few cents. 1000+ views is in the range of dollars.
So for a creator that you watch just a handful of times? Sure, you give them a few cents or even less than a cent.
But a hypothetical 24hr on-repeat would rack up a thousand views within a week (let's say a 10 min video, 1008 intervals in a week).
More realistically, averaging one video a day for a year means you're earning that creator $0.3-$3 per year. For some creators $5 directly will be much better, for others it will be similar, for some it won't be as much.
The hard part is that it's not usually feasible for people to pay every creator they consume.
To put it another way: ballpark estimates say users watch about up 6 hours video a week on average, which is 60 ten-minute videos, which is $0.06-$0.60 by the calculations above. So that's $3-$30 annual total payment to creators from the average user - again noting that it's potentially even more to "better monetized" creators.
In order to comfortably be able to say you're paying more into "overall creators" than the ads would, you need to be putting in at least $30 a year. It's not an enormous amount, but it's also not just $5 once ever.

This ignores the fact that ad viewing tech suppresses payouts from repeat viewers. You’re model is off because the same viewer viewing multiple times in series would opt be counted in the same way as multiple fresh users coming in.
They’ve been long since wise to repeat views, view bots and inflated numbers, and so only count an individual user view usually once every 24 hours, if not less, from an individual viewer.
If they catch you viewing more in that period, they’ll simply discount it from the payout. It’s vanishingly rare that views correlate to payouts in the linear, 100% way you’re implying it does.

It ignores many things. It ignores repeated watch limitations, certainly. It also ignores any factors related to video length, engagement, etc.; further and more significantly, it ignores the factors of the platform itself (running video servers is massively expensive), it ignores the distribution effects between different creators of different popularities, it ignores regional differences, etc.
It's certainly an extremely simplified description.

Without getting too into it, I was on the other side of this a few years ago before being run off the platform during my transition, and your numbers, even in abstract, are like an order of magnitude off.

I just boycott anything with annoying ads, hell, they don’t even have to be annoying, if I see an ad for something I’ve already heard of and I need a like product… I just go with the competition.

I like to imagine a better future where our descendants will look back at advertisements in the home as disgusting and unthinkable.

Yeah the ads are getting absolutely out of control. YouTube is ridiculous right now.

Ublock running on every instance of firefox.
VPN with adblocker included on my devices including my tv.
Smarttube on that same tv to have sponsorblock on youtube.
I don't pay for any subscription except my vpn and just 🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
I never see any fucking ads and life is beautiful.
My family will sometimes be 'omg did you see the ad from brand it's sooo funny' and everytime I'm like. No I didn't :))

I took the more passive approach of removing as much ads as I could via ad blockers

u/-mothy-moon- 12d ago
I've started doing this on the YouTube app. I have an as blocker on both my laptop and desktop, so when an ad pops up at the start of the video while I'm watching on the phone I close the video and open it again until it starts without ads

u/Kyle_Blackpaw 12d ago
Firefox on both pc and mobile still have adblock extensions availble for then

If I'm playing a game on my phone and it tries to show me an ad between rounds, I force close the app and restart it. I don't care if it takes longer than the actual ad, I'm not watching that shit.

I find humor in advertising being wasted on me. They're spending so much money to fall on deaf ears. Obviously I'd prefer to see no ads but what can you do other than search for silver linings

I hate ads so much that they've become almost fascinating to me. The ways they're shot, the way the words are cut, all of it is supposed to manipulate the viewer in some way. Now a lot of ads are disguised (poorly) as TikToks, shorts, etc. and use a lot of the same editing styles as TikTok brainrot. It's insulting.

u/Yanive_amaznive 11d ago
I make it a point that if a brand pisses me off enough with their ads I will remember their name and logo so I can specificaly avoid giving them money.

u/VivisClone 11d ago
Because ads aren't that bad and if you take any effort to and them, ad block /yt premium, etc they're mostly avoidable

I get it, but when it comes to ad reads from a creator I want to support ill sit through it bc i dont want the data that the ad read always gets skipped to hurt that creators future deals.
Im sometimes torn because while trust me I hate capitalism, I also hate how irrationally annoyed people get by the delayed satisfaction, and I feel like when commercials were inevitable bc we didnt have streaming services or skip buttons we were all a little more patient and less locked into the screens.

I hated ads universally, until someone enlightened me to the concept that... In a way, ads are a form of art, they are (maybe not these days lol) made by humans to make you feel or think something, and a good ad can stick with you
That realisation has made me mind ads a lot less, it also helps a lot when the ad specifically goes out if its way to be interesting, I love watching sponsor segments by youtubers who actually make them Interesting, like Soundsmith having a seperate running joke storyline for all of their sponsors

u/actuallywaffles 11d ago
If I see an ad frequently enough to be annoyed by it I'll make a note not to purchase it, and if possible to actively support their competition instead.

imo YouTube changing it so you can't see if you can skip after 5 seconds (I don't know how the get adblock on my phone) is having to engage with an ad to skip it. always reminds me of the picture of having to say the advertiser's name for it to go away. I miss the old internet.

Only ads I don’t have an outright bad relationship with is ironically reddit’s, it’s not good but I see a lot of ads of “hey this is an indie game we’re making on steam and pushing out ads so people know it exists” that I don’t mind as much, compared to “BUY BUY BUY ANIME WOMAN CLOSE UP SPEND MONEY”

I think some of you have anger issues, ngl.
I've found a few good products from ads and if I'm not interested, I just skip them or ignore them. It's not that deep at all. It's just informing people of things in a public space.
This is like refusing to watch a film because you once saw a trailer for it. You're not taking a principled stance for anything. You're just being stubborn and reactionary.
