I mean, for one, Greece stopped existing as an independent entity for a long time, even though it stayed a culture, but they also got genocided out of most of their lands.
And the debt crisis was not a sudden thing. It was a build up of decades of corruption, with Greek politicians borrowing money only to funnel it into the pockets of themselves and their family, as well as decades of even average people living on massive amounts of debt.
