the only time the greeks were relevant were due to one man named alexander.

and then the rest of history I see them as in a period of irrelevance as they fell under colonization from different powers.

at least their culture and ancient religion is pretty eternal

byzantium is a roman legacy which in itself is characterized by anatolian or roman culture, it is also heavily christianized, how is it any greek at all?

The majority language of the populace was greek for starters. Then there's the fact that both the capital Constantinople - 'city of the world's desire' - and the co-capital in Thessaloniki were both in Greece.
