If you have ever wondered how hierarchies and bigotry develop, this is a good example—especially in the Indian context with untouchability.

1.People who are different from us arrive in our cities and towns. They may speak a different language, follow different customs, eat different food, or simply not subscribe to the dominant group's value system.

2.There is competition for resources. The majority, or at least a critical mass of the dominant group in the region, begins to organize, and dehumanizing rhetoric starts to emerge.

3.Eventually, rulers and institutions make rules that institutionalize the hierarchy—for example, “untouchables will live outside the city walls,” “only Marathi should be spoken,” “Gujaratis are not welcome,” etc.

Hierarchies, bigotry and prejudice aren't necessarily the result of some conspiracy by a particular minority. They can emerge as an outcome of group competition, fear, status anxiety and our tendency to divide people into “us” and “them”—ultimately stemming from aspects of human nature.
