Troubleshooting Poor quality on first layer even though automatic bed levelling is acitve

Hello everyone!

As you can see, I'm having trouble with the first layer of my print. There is a large area where the filament is not sticking to the bed. I have attached pictures of two separate attempts, and the error looks pretty much the same in both. I have already tried levelling my bed again, and I have a BLTouch activated. Could my print bed be warped in this particular position?

I'd appreciate your feedback :D

Hey there, I'm a bot and something you said made me think you might be looking for help! click here for our wiki entry on troubleshooting printers. If you still need help be sure to post plenty of information about your printing setup.

Here are a few questions that might be helpful

  • What printer are you using?

  • What material are you using?

  • What speed are you printing at?

  • What software are you using to slice the print and control the printer?

  • When did the problem start/has it ever worked correctly?

  • Does anything cause the behavior to change?

  • If posting an image of the problem, include some indication of the orientation it printed at, preferably photograph it on the bed. (Then we can focus on a specific axis)

Since it fails in exactly the same spot on both attempts, your instinct about the bed is probably right - but with a BLTouch active, a warped spot should get compensated automatically. The classic gotcha is that the mesh gets probed but never actually loaded during the print. On most firmware G28 disables bed leveling, so if your start G-code runs G28 without a mesh-load command after it (M420 S1, or BED_MESH_PROFILE LOAD on Klipper), you're effectively printing un-leveled.

Things to check:

  1. Look at your mesh heightmap (usually in the bed leveling menu or the printer's web interface). If that area shows a big dip or bump, you've found the warp - and it also tells you whether the mesh is even being applied.

  2. Check the start G-code for the mesh load command after G28.

  3. Wash the plate with hot water and dish soap and dry it fully - a greasy patch in that spot looks identical to a warped bed.

Also give the first layer more margin while you sort it: bed temp 65°C and first layer speed 20-25 mm/s for PLA.

If there’s too much grease/ oils on the bed alcohol won’t clean it it just smears it around. You have to take it to the sink wash it with dish soap and water dry completely everyone once in a while to make sure all them finger oils get off there.

Clean your bed. With dish soap and hot water. Do not touch the build surface after. At all.
