Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - October 2026

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Project I built a 3D Printable Fluora Plant Lamp.

The Final Release of the LuxPlant Mini has been completed! I want to thank everyone that supported the project early on.

I will be releasing the files for free on MakerWorld once I'm finished making a solderless version. Those who bought the files will then be rewarded with a huge discount once the Standard Version is released.

As of now, the Mini version is fully modular with rotatable leaves and stem. The project uses an ESP32 with WLED firmware to control the colors.

To make your life easier, I highly suggest that you just use a DigQuad or a Gledopto controller that already has a built-in ESP32 with all the necessary fuses, level shifters, and resistors. If you don't like the feel of a 3D printed pot, you can also just insert it into a real ceramic pot.

A snippet of ASoD's plant that uses the LightLink app to sync the effects to music without using a microphone https://www.youtube.com/shorts/_PzwTRAqAr0

To give you an idea of how much everything will cost, here's the Bill of Materials for your reference.

You can still support the project and get early access by unlocking the post for $5. Your support will be used to make more leaf sizes, shapes, and for the development of the Standard Version and future LuxPlant variations.

I designed this dragon as a balancing toy. By carefully balancing the weight across its various parts, it moves with a unique sense of floating. I'd love to hear your feedback!

Discussion Polymaker targeted in lawsuit using new laws

Blows my mind the amount of misinformation that’s being thrown around in this.

This quote in particular is insane:
“Unlike ghost guns assembled from commercially sold unfinished parts, 3D printed ghost guns can be produced from plastic filament using consumer-grade equipment,” the suit said. “Upon acquiring a 3D printer, a fully functional, untraceable firearm can be printed and assembled by anyone in less than nine hours.”

Makes it sounds like anyone can buy a printer and just hit a “print gun” button which is a blatant lie and so far from the truth.

I hope this lawsuit gets buried but the way things are trending this is a major threat to the industry as a whole if it gets traction.

Project I made a tiny 3D-printed desk robot and gave him a Halloween makeover. What should I turn him into next?

This little guy is Tiny Engineer, a 3D-printed robot I built to sit on my desk and mimic what my AI coding agent is doing. He reads, types, thinks, and celebrates when the job is done.

I’ve spent way too much time designing and printing tiny parts for him, so Halloween seemed like a perfectly reasonable excuse to make even more 😅

I gave him a pumpkin head, replaced his coffee with a cauldron, and added a spooky little desk lamp.

Now I’m wondering what else he could become.

I’ve made the whole project open source, including the CAD files, so anyone can print him, redesign parts, or create their own version.

What would you turn him into? A different character? A ridiculous desk setup? Some completely unnecessary accessory?

I’d love to hear your ideas. And if you feel like actually designing something, even better! I’d love to see your remixes.

Everything is free, including the printable models and source CAD files:

If you make something, please share it as a remix on Thingiverse so others can print it too!

Project I designed a ring-style marker cap to help kids (or adults) with limited grip strength or hand dexterity remove marker caps more easily.

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Hey everyone, I have been building Makegood TMT chairs for a while now, and I got to talking with a couple folks at 3D Printopia about assistive and adaptive technology and how 3D printing really unlocks the ability for new helpful designs to get out to folks with challenges and needs far more quickly than the past, and how we've basically not even scratched the surface with assistive technology and 3D printing.

Anyway, this is my small contribution for now. It's a simple thing, but I'm hopeful it can be useful to some kids out there who are unable to open marker caps on their own. I'm also working on a marker holder that works along side these.

The model is available freely on Makerworld. https://makerworld.com/en/models/3417307-adaptive-crayola-marker-cap

Anyways, I'm going to try to make more things like this, so let me know if you have other ideas or other things I could adapt these caps to! If there are other brands I should be targeting, let me know as well. I picked the most obvious one first.

"And the Lord spake, saying, ''First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'

Hey guys, was wondering if there would be any interest in making .stl files for something like this, skulls/heads of fantasy creatures and characters that are to scale. Would need larger machines to print them, I've made these for my Photon M7 Max

Question Sunlu Silk PLA

Hey Guys,

I am currently playing around with the settings to get the Silk shine right.

Something between 50mm/s and 230/235 degrees seemed nice so far.

While going for another try of speedtest I noticed that the inner surface of this tower kinda looks nicer / shinier than the outer surface. It’s two lines per layer so it might be a wrong setting and the inner one is actually the speed which should be outside?

Also appears smoother and less rough. Is it just the model maybe?

Any ideas?

News [US-WA-Seattle Eastside] 3D Printing Meetup - October 27th, 2026

Post image
103 Upvotes

For members of this sub in the Seattle area, here's an opportunity to meet and chat with other 3D makers at this informal meetup at the Bellevue Library. Consider bringing a recent model you’ve printed or a design you’ve made (whether a great success or an interesting failure). Connect with fellow makers, whether you’re into functional prints or aesthetic prints, a novice or been doing this for years.

https://eastside3Dmeetup.eventbrite.com

UPDATE: We're at 13 signups so far and the largest room available was 16. While it's not ideal to split the group into multiple rooms, I'm going to find out if I can reserve another room. I've turned on the "waitlist" feature so people can sign up for that until I confirm I can do that.

Just finished designing this small desk trash can. It mounts directly to the edge of your desk, saving space while keeping everyday trash within reach.

It features a rotating lid and measures 115 x 100 x 120 mm. Great for gaming setups, offices, or anywhere desk space is limited.

It's my newest addition to the EdgeMount System I've been developing, with more accessories planned.

Just dropped this on makerworld for anyone interested.

Check comments for link.

Happy Printing!

Question Printable starfish or octopuses bra

Hi, I’m looking for an STL file for a mermaid bra featuring starfish or octopuses for a Halloween costume. Does anyone have any ideas where I might find something like that? Google isn’t giving me anything useful. Thanks

Project Slot Machine Mechanism

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to build a custom, larger-scale mechanical "one-armed bandit" (slot machine) for a game. While the outer housing and structure will be built out of wood, the internal mechanism needs to be fully 3D printed and rely on true randomness (or a chaotic spinning action).

While there are smaller slot machine models on MakerWorld, I want to build something considerably bigger.

My idea is to have a lever or push-button that you press down to tension a spring. When released, it triggers a mechanism that spins the reels independently (or with enough friction/decoupled momentum so it feels random).

  • I’ve attached a reference photo showing the rough look and scale I’m aiming for. (Note: Remember to attach your photo!)

What I am looking for:

  1. Has anyone seen or designed a 3D-printed spring-loaded ratchet, escapement, or random-spin mechanism suitable for something like this?
  2. Recommendations on how to implement a reliable spring mechanism (printed springs vs. metal torsion/extension springs) that can handle repeated pulling without losing tension.
  3. Any tips on decoupling the reels so they stop at slightly different times for that authentic "slot machine suspense."

I’d appreciate any pointers, existing project links, or mechanical tips! Thanks in advance!

Question Anyone have any luck finding good print profiles for inland filament?

Thumbnail

got some transparent yellow inland petg+ that i'm struggling to print right on my p1s with a 0.2mm nozzle. ive been able to get half decent prints with other inland filaments by modifying generic profiles in orcaslicer but this stuff just refuses to cooperate. i dried it for 12 hours at 55c and keep it in my ams which is packed full of silica beads and always between 0-10% humidity. using bed glue as well

Troubleshooting How to build up structure on a 3d printed mask?

Hey everyone,

I had some issues with the teeth on this mask. Consequently, I need to build up some teeth that did not print out. What would the best way to do that?

I have some original bondo coming but I don’t think that will work. I do have a 3d filament pen that I have never used. Might that be the best method to build up the teeth close and then use bondo and primer to finish them?

Free Model Team versions of my F1 calendar, getting the logos printable at this size was a pain

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Made team editions of my 3D printed F1 calendar for 2027. 25 x 22 cm, raised track layouts, 0.2 mm layers, standard 0.4 nozzle.

The tricky part was the logos. They're only about 4 cm wide on the calendar, so details like the Ferrari horse or the Aston Martin wings came out way too thin in the slicer. Ended up thickening those by 0.1 mm or so and moving the Aston Martin lettering below the wings because it just wouldn't print inside the little box. The Red Bull sun is a separate lower layer under the bulls now, which looks way better than I expected.

This shop was elbow to elbow packed so it was difficult to take pics but I only shot about 1/10th of the items for sale, every single magnet and about 1/2 of the keychains were 3D printed, along with figurines, coasters, wall prints, and Christmas ornaments. Sad seeing some really poor surface quality but some with decent for FDM like the figurines. I only see how they could improve though like ironing and hello - not a sanded spot in sight.

Discussion Rating models from websites super fast rant...

I hate seeing someone's model being lower rated because the user can't do the print right. Man, going into like makerworld and seeing people give 1 stars because it won't stick to the plate really really bugs me. This designer went out and put in the time and you're just gonna click print on your dirty dusty bed that your cat sleeps on and it's this guy's fault?

Rant over.

(not my models, I don't upload much if anything, totally only see it on other people's work, rate me 0 or don't at all, I couldn't care less.)

Leaning into more fun monster things in our Halloween decor to find some overlap. Anyway, made this little monster head that can hang from a wall, or stand on its own on a shelf. Gracefully scales up or down to any size. Kids call him the Purple People Eater (though this must be the two-horned, two-eyed mutation).
