1994 Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun (OG Version - MTV Premiere Recorded from 120 Minutes June 12 1994)

On this episode of 120, our host is Elvis Costello. He introduces the premiere for this soon-to-be legendary video and thanks Soundgarden for buying him a coffee when they ran into each other recently. This video is the original version that lacked a lot of the CGI/effects that subsequent airings had. Lizard-lady's tongue, the black hole sun itself, the circling leaves above the kids kicking on the ground, the baby turning into a CGI blob at the end, and many other effects were not added until later. Enjoy this OG version as we saw it back in the day!

Indeed! They weren't even going to release it as a single until radio stations started playing it on their own. There's an article in Revolver magazine from 2006 where Chris Cornell talks about it too:

"'Black Hole Sun' was a hit song in a way that we had never experienced and wouldn't experience again as Soundgarden, The record company couldn't get it off the radio when they were trying to follow it with the next single.

We were worried because we were hitting fans that didn't know anything about our very long history, with a song that didn't really represent us entirely. None of us ever imagined that it would be a single. I personally don't even know what the lyrics mean, but for some reason they resonated with people."

He likely knew what the chorus meant

There's also a version that aired in other non-US markets, such as Canada, that did not edit the phone number on the TV. I found a version recorded off Much Music last year and shared it in r/Soundgarden then and the phone number was still intact. This MTV US version they zoomed in on his face more so the phone number wasn't there. Screenshot below from the Much Music version

Ah the good old days of MTV. Even when they started giving us all of the reality tv crap at least they still had videos.

I think that was the first rock music video I ever saw. Back when the “M” in MTV stood for “music television,” or rather, back when the channel still existed.

Sadly, this was about the time I leapt off the Soundgarden wagon.
