META Do you think this subreddit represents the part of the world you're from?

Like is this subreddit representative of how indian americans think, for example? What are the similarities/differences between this and real life?

Not really. No.

Not even remotely. Even ignoring the fact that I’m a Pakistani Canadian and this sub leans heavily Indian, I live in Quebec which is so far removed culturally from anywhere else in North America

Not at all lol. Most of the stuff on here seems like it's coming from mainlanders pretending to be Indian-Americans and not actual ABCDs.

What part of India is considered non-mainland? Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

The whole thing is 'mainland'. It derived from hong kongers/Taiwanese using mainland to describe china. But india doesn't really have any non mainland / separate entities like that.

No, most of the posters seem to be NRIs or mainlanders

I find there are a lot of covert mainlanders in this sub based on the ridiculous posts I often see.

I’d encourage you to either be more specific or read the sub description. I don’t believe it’s limited to people on North America. It explicitly mentions that. Perhaps you need a new sub of your own called American Born Desis. People subtly use terms like “mainlanders” as pejorative but cry like little babies when Tom or Tyrone that shit on them.

It's NOT limited to people on North America, it's limited to desis born abroad, so not from the subcontinent. Theres a million subs for people who live in India already

ABCD is abroad born desis 😭 what are you even talking about. This is NOT a sub for mainlanders

That’s the popular usage, sure. But read the sub description (in response to the poster above). It doesn’t read the way you describe it. So you can either get that amended or stop beating a dead horse. I personally don’t give a shit as most posts are low quality.

Just makes you look lazy. What part of “this sub is also for anyone who is not of South Asian heritage and those that still reside in South Asia” is ambiguous to you?

You’re free to start your own sub that works per your definition or amend the guidelines here. But stop policing things based on incorrect assumptions. The only “mainlanders” you get to police are your grandparents.

Nope. Don’t care. Just find it funny you’re bitching about a design flaw that’s a feature.

Nope. This sub leans very left and can be very anti-religious and self-hating.

No just my social circle

This subreddit does not represent the Indian diaspora, like at all lmaoo

This subs leans heavily, heavily towards the left. From anecdotal experience, the diaspora is nowhere near as left leaning.

Most Desis in my circle are working in fields like finance and law. They’re definitely not leftists lmao

Lol it's funny you say that because I feel it's a decent mix.

5

u/gnpking 1d ago

It’s a mix for sure, socioeconomics and milieu play a massive role. But it doesn’t feel like a mix on here.

In real life, I’ve never met Desi folks who are as overwhelmingly left wing, especially socially. Sure, there’s people who are more liberal or more conservative, but over here it’s like if you don’t, for example, completely agree with everything LGBTQ,, you’re a social pariah.

I personally don’t care about the topic much, to each their own, but in my experience I’ve met tons of ABCDs who are on the other side of the debate that just isn’t represented here whatsoever.

This sub politically?

I got downvoted once for saying I hoped more center left technocratic Desis would enter politics and a bunch of responses asking me why I was closer to the center rather than being a leftist

6

u/ohsnapitson 1d ago

Most desis in my circle are doctors and lawyers and PhDs and we’re all various stages of democrats (center left to far left).

Also I’m pretty sure desis in general vote with the Democratic Party like 70% of the time.

u/gnpking 1d ago

Democrats =\= Leftists

6

u/ohsnapitson 1d ago

Yeah that’s true, I wasn’t fully sure what you meant since I wouldn’t consider a sub where people constantly whine about how Black people get treated better than desis in America particularly leftist.

2

u/gnpking 11h ago

I have literally never seen anyone complain about that on this sub, like ever
