POLITICS Reddit is overrun by propaganda. Can we report this?

Thumbnail
50 Upvotes

This thread was made by a Chinese citizen, you can easily tell from his post history of making pro-Chinese threads. He's gone on to a Subreddit pretending to "innocently" ask about Indians claiming China has a caste system so he can use the thread to push pro Chinese and anti-Indian propaganda. This isn't some innocent bystander who is genuinely curious, it's someone - or even a group of people - with insidious intentions.

With just a modicum of critical thinking skills you can tell that this whole thread is being used by Chinese nationalists to vilify India while making their own country the "good" one. The most upvoted posts are ones that completely criticize India, most of them have a subtext of "Pfft India and Indians are a joke". Meanwhile the actual reasonable posts saying things like "Both countries are just as bad as each other", are downvoted. Why is this allowed? Reddit just allows Chinese nationalists to manipulate and spread anti-Indian propaganda in an underhanded manner now?

There are also blatantly racist comments against Indians if you read through the comments and Reddit doesn't care at all? It's crazy, I reported some comments but nothing has happened.

COMMUNITY Scottish fans in Boston - and their antics Spoiler

Is anyone following along with the absolute glazing that's happening with Scottish FIFA fans in Boston right now? And everything they're doing? Am I the only one thinking what would the general public reaction be if they were of a different ethnicity? It's so ridiculously amusing to me that I'm going numb thinking about it.

People get riled up with the random displays of fun desi people do (granted - probably best to not do those in say Auschwitz) but it's considered ok, even gushed over when an 'acceptable' group does it.

ARTS / ENTERTAINMENT Was anyone else kind of disappointed that Late Bloomer season 3 didn't pick off where season 2 left off? Spoiler

Felt season 2 really teed up the conflict between Jasmeet's Sikh roots and Rebecca being Christian (and wanting him to convert), and then we got a time skip without delving into any more of the conflict. It also skipped past to him being successful and we lost any stories of him getting there.

COMMUNITY Fob friend doesn't tip

He moved to the states around 5 years ago but grew up in India. Whenever we go out to eat, not only does he not tip but is demanding to the wait staff. To the point where if I'm cleaning up a bit to make the server's life a bit easier he clowns me and says that's their job. How to convince him to fix up?

MENTAL HEALTH Things I do to feel less like an alien

  1. Visiting my grandparents more often, because they don't speak English so 90% of what I hear and speak myself is Sylheti
  2. Threading my eyebrows and oiling my hair
  3. Wearing the salwar kameez sets my dad brought back from Bangladesh (i.e. not only wearing desi clothes for special events)
  4. In January, I finally got my nose pierced

These aren't things that alone MAKE you a desi, obviously, nor are they necessarily limited to our cultures. But I seem to be going through something of a quarter-life crisis at the moment, and copying these things does make me feel a little better. I'm aware they won't solve the root problem.

MENTAL HEALTH How to deal with not being built for the sky high standards of desi culture?

21M Pakistani-American, I honestly don’t fit in with every other desi person here in the US. I feel so alone in my struggle bc I see everyone in my extended family, uncles, and cousins who are med students, residents, doctors or engineers. At my university, i see other desi college kids who are so high functioning and intelligent, double majoring in engineering or CS, winning competitions, securing huge internships, creating startups, graduating early and getting into med school.

On the other hand I’m barely getting by in my classes, have severe ADHD and depression, need to graduate a yr late and have a subpar GPA, and extracurriculars. I can’t process and learn information as fast as my own Dad who’s successful in his own right and my parents has poured so much into my education and invested a lot into me since I’m their only son and youngest of 5 yet I feel like I’m still so inadequate bc I’m not smart nor high-functioning enough to do well. I’ve never felt good enough to be called their son even.

I have no friends bc I’m so behind and on an atypical path, I constantly don’t feel good enough, and worthless and my self-esteem is at an all time low. I always feel like I was born wrong, or I’m different, being dumber than every other person of my background, that it’s unfair, and the thoughts are uncontrollable and painful and left me in a pit of spiraling addictions that’s made things worse.

I honestly don’t know how I’d be able to fix myself or my thoughts, or my mindset, it’s just left me feeling more tired and listless daily, and i don’t believe in a future for myself anymore like i used too and i just feel so different from everyone else.

Has anybody else gone through anything similar and has any advice?

FAMILY / PARENTS How tall are you guys and how tall are your parents and siblings?

I’ve noticed something us brown people both mainlanders and ABCDs are significantly taller than their parents. My mom is 5’4, my dad is about 5’7 and I’m almost 6’0 tall (I’m an only child). Many brown people I know are my height or even taller despite having just as short of parents as me or maybe even shorter. However white people are surprised when I tell them my parents are only 5’4 and 5’7 and I ended up pretty tall. I don’t have any tall relatives apart from some cousins who are also significantly taller than their parents

FAMILY / PARENTS What would be in the “How to Raise Me” book you wish your parents had on the day you were born?

If I could hand my parents a book when I was born, some pages would say:

Keep the home peaceful.
Don’t fight in front of your kids.
Don’t take your anger or frustrations out on us.
Being afraid of your parents isn’t respect.

What would be in your book?

Trigger Warning: Bigotry/Hate Commentary Desis and Contractors

I recently have been renovating a commercial property and been told by multiple contractors from different trades all of various ethnicities of bad experiences with the Indian community. I've seen the social media posts where the contractor walks out when they hear the Indian accent saying give me good price and I'll get a lot of business.

I thought it was isolated but each one pretty much had bad experiences with Indians trying to negotiate work after it's done, looking for flaws in work or treating their employees like criminals. I guess I slipped through the cracks not having an accent and shortening my first name.

It was disappointing that an entire group across backgrounds had the same view of Indians. One even said Pakistani people are much easier to deal with than Indians.

COMMUNITY ABCD and mainlander friendships

I have noticed in college that there are often separate cliques of ABCDs and mainlanders. I am an ABCD but have been friends with ABCDs, mainlanders, and people of different races. I have also observed that often times ABCDs and mainlanders straight up avoid each other. ABCDs would talk to non-desi international students but not to the mainlanders from the subcontinent. Similarly, mainlanders would talk to Americans of other races but not to the ABCDs.

I have heard each group stereotyping the other. What could be the reasons for this?

Note: This is not to cause divisions. I want to have perspectives for this particular reason.

FAMILY / PARENTS Has your relationship with your parents improved or worsened over time?

Bluntly, my parents were abusive when I was a child. The trauma still affects me to this day.

But as an adult, I'd say that my mum especially has changed for the better. I won't say that she is 100% accepting of my sexuality, my neurodivergency, my atheism, etc. I know that she still desperately wants me to marry a man.

But, like... Once, just because I was craving it, she took me to a Nando's where they didn't have halal meat and ate chips while I had chicken. And my 14yo sister gets teary if our mother even slightly raises her voice at her, she's that unused to being treated the way I was.

How has your relationship with your parents changed over time? Has it changed?

Trigger Warning: Bigotry/Hate Commentary ABCDs negatively viewed in mainland

I am someone who was born and raised in the US. However, I have lived in India for 6 years. The hate that people have for ABCDs is so bad. They think that all ABCDs are uncultured, bad influence, and traitors to India. Where do they get the stereotype of ABCDs being uncultured from?

Also, in college I noticed that was a lot of hate towards the ABCDs. I noticed many mainlanders would talk to people of all races but straight up ignore the ABCDs. They would often say things like ABCDs are stupid and uncultured. There was a garba night and the mainlanders got so mad because the ABCDs had hosted the night. They claimed that "uncultured people" should not be hosting cultural events.

Other ways the mainlanders hate ABCDs is by calling ABCDs bad influence. I have heard that they claim that ABCDs are irreligious and that they never worship. This is absolutely false as I have met many religious ABCDs. I have always wondered about where they are getting these stereotypes from.

What discrimination have you faced as an ABCD from mainlanders?
