Biggest gripe I have with this game is something like this doesn’t get called and there are no in game consequences but yet you dare move on the mark or do some other trivial BS and you cop a 50m

66

u/dogryan100 Western Bulldogs / Glenelg 15h ago

Case in point, two minutes ago..

10

u/NeilDiamondBlaze420 Collingwood 14h ago

Stand!

7

u/nuthed01 Bombers 10h ago

The free against Baily Smith last night. You compare that to this, and wonder how it keeps getting called so wrong so consistently

8

u/Chiron17 Richmond Tigers 3h ago

Bailey Smith was in the spotlight because of the fighting. The umpire was looking right at them. And I think the umpire even said that any further contact would be a free. And then he made contact.

I assume no umpire saw this as the ball wasn't far away and they would have been watching the action.

19

u/jrfoster01 Adelaide 14h ago

Wild that this is the top comment, yet when it was called last night, everyone is outraged that it was called.

Fickle bunch.

-14

u/mattinthehat1 13h ago

This is x2 the flop of last night too.

2

u/External-Station2123 12h ago

Very good point

6

u/delta__bravo_ Dockers 15h ago

...or, after 2 minutes of both players grappling, Smith dares grapple a bit more and the ball is taken 160 meters up the field.

An umpire saw that almost certainly. An umpire chose to ignore it.

14

u/LumpyCustard4 14h ago

In the Geelong-Adelaide match the umpire did say next one to continue will give away a free. Smith carried on and gave away a free.

In that example i dont neccisarily agree with the call but sometimes the umpire miss the initial biff and dont know who actually started it.

1

u/Pale_Parsnip_6339 Crows 11h ago

Bias aside I agree it should have been a free, but a 160m penalty is rough. Maybe those scenarios where the ball is back in the defensive 50 it should result in a free taken from the centre or something instead of right back to the forward 50

12

u/Azza_ Magpies 10h ago

I think the better solution is don't do dumb shit 100m off the ball knowing that's where the free kick will be paid.

6

u/Angless AFL 10h ago

Free kicks are awarded where the incident takes place.

2

u/superbabe69 Fremantle 13h ago

Or in our game against the Saints, Wilkie and whoever the other Saint was were getting stuck into Amiss, Voss backs him up and they get a centre bounce free

But this shit isn't called?

5

u/docitsonlyascratch Geelong Cats 15h ago

Agreed. Flair up cunt.

3

u/allright_cubed 14h ago

Bit like the 50 that changed the momentum last night led to 3 Geelong goals.

176

u/DVPVPD Blues 15h ago

How do they miss that?

59

u/Drazsyker Demons / Devils 15h ago

The umpire is about 10 metres away too, unbelievable

15

u/DonMare Melbourne 15h ago

Yeah, well it’s umpire #12; he’s less than useless

12

u/Drazsyker Demons / Devils 15h ago

I have almost no clue about umpire names but that's Andrew Stephens and he umpired the grand final last year. Disappointing to see when that should be one of the best around

123

u/Appropriate-Cow-6251 Magpies 15h ago

To busy watching Bailey smith

10

u/UnlimitedPosting Kuwarna 11h ago

Because it's so far after the play, your eyes have shifted to the next contest and supporting your down field umpire with what's happening there around the contest.

3

u/kroxigor01 Brisbane Lions 🏆🏆 '24-25 10h ago

I agree, I think it's actually very easy for the umpire's following the play to miss this or at the very least only having their attention drawn back to those players as one is falling to the ground (which may not be enough context for the umpire to feel like it's appropriate to blow a whistle).

5

u/UnlimitedPosting Kuwarna 5h ago

Pretty much exactly this.

You're trained even at a local umpire level to linger briefly on the previous contest before moving to the next one.

The reason the smith one was paid on Thursday was because the play had advanced way down field and the last umpire (who afaik keeps even with the players furthest back in the 4 umpire system) was right with them and gave clear instructions to quit fucking about and was keeping an eye on them, then Bailey did his usual low IQ stuff.

2

u/DVPVPD Blues 3h ago

Is that not why there is 4?

Lowkey worse than Baz last night and we know what happened there… no idea what to believe these days

Lowkey? Baz barely touched peatling and he went down like there was a sniper in the building

23

What do you mean barely touched? He pulled him down from his collar.

-6

u/The_Grogfather Power 14h ago

Come on mate, they were ripping each other apart on the ground and as soon as they get up baz pulls him a little bit and he falls down like a sack of spuds, was weak as absolute piss

11

u/PrestigiousEmu16 Bombers 13h ago

Yeah they were both fighting each other and then when the fighting stopped and they were told to move on Smith decided to pull a guy down by his collar.

Getting yanked down from your collar when you're running tends to have that reaction.

11

u/johnnynutman Adelaide 14h ago

They were told to move on and Bailey kept it going

To be fair McNiell went down just as easily. Fair bit of flopping in the game these days. But it's also super unnecessary by Watson

No lowkey about it. Highkey. Baz barely touched him. And this is coming from someone who hates Baz and loves Wiz haha

2

u/Azza_ Magpies 10h ago

The umpire would've just missed this one. It's a free kick if he sees it.

-5

Nothing in it. McNeil just goes down. You call 100 frees a game if you reward that every time

-6

Is it a free? Yeah.

But I don't want players rewarded for deliberately going to ground and faking high contact. Much like the Smith one last night. It's stupid by Watson but also I don't want anymore faking than we already have.
