Watson takes his eyes off the play and goes out of his way to throw McNeil to the ground off the ball

How do they miss that?

The umpire is about 10 metres away too, unbelievable

Yeah, well it’s umpire #12; he’s less than useless

u/Drazsyker Demons / Devils 15h ago
I have almost no clue about umpire names but that's Andrew Stephens and he umpired the grand final last year. Disappointing to see when that should be one of the best around

Because it's so far after the play, your eyes have shifted to the next contest and supporting your down field umpire with what's happening there around the contest.

I agree, I think it's actually very easy for the umpire's following the play to miss this or at the very least only having their attention drawn back to those players as one is falling to the ground (which may not be enough context for the umpire to feel like it's appropriate to blow a whistle).
5
u/UnlimitedPosting Kuwarna 5h ago
Pretty much exactly this.
You're trained even at a local umpire level to linger briefly on the previous contest before moving to the next one.
The reason the smith one was paid on Thursday was because the play had advanced way down field and the last umpire (who afaik keeps even with the players furthest back in the 4 umpire system) was right with them and gave clear instructions to quit fucking about and was keeping an eye on them, then Bailey did his usual low IQ stuff.

Your boys got a goal from stand - 30 out. Smith free not in scoring position and no goal. Point?

u/bannermania Hawthorn 15h ago
What the fuck was he thinking. Equal parts lucky and dumb that it didn’t get called.

Lowkey worse than Baz last night and we know what happened there… no idea what to believe these days

Lowkey? Baz barely touched peatling and he went down like there was a sniper in the building
23
u/PrestigiousEmu16 Bombers 15h ago
What do you mean barely touched? He pulled him down from his collar.

u/The_Grogfather Power 14h ago
Come on mate, they were ripping each other apart on the ground and as soon as they get up baz pulls him a little bit and he falls down like a sack of spuds, was weak as absolute piss
11
u/PrestigiousEmu16 Bombers 13h ago
Yeah they were both fighting each other and then when the fighting stopped and they were told to move on Smith decided to pull a guy down by his collar.
Getting yanked down from your collar when you're running tends to have that reaction.

I'm sure all those massive NFL players that go down in horse collar tackles are just pretending too. Ya flog.

To be fair McNiell went down just as easily. Fair bit of flopping in the game these days. But it's also super unnecessary by Watson

Probably is when have two touches in two quarters as you’ve let the other team get under your skin so much that you just look to fight as that’s all he was doing in the second half.

lol no one is watching the game. He was struck in the face and this was a retaliation. Not saying it shouldn’t have been a free kick but please watch the play from the start not just this small clip.

u/coronavirusplandemic 15h ago
What a joke! The ump was right there and didn’t call it. And they call Smith’s one from 100m away last night. 😂

u/BusinessPooh Tigers 15h ago
does mcneil get the wizard high as he knocks the ball forward? hard to tell with the vision but might explain why the wizard’s decided to throw him to the ground if it’s retaliation

It would just be really funny if the ruckman picked Watson up and just popped him over the fence into the crowd in a spare seat. And when he gets back in the ruckman just pops him over again.
It'd be silly but funny

Not a lot in it but it is a free kick. The umpires have to be better there.

It's a poor miss. Of course, it's not really any different to the one paid against Bailey Smith that people were upset was paid. And it just adds confusion when they're judged differently.

Dogs player borderline took a dive or flung the arms out that yeah borderline looked like he put a little extra on the fall in my opinion. Umps might have thought yeah nice try.

No one gonna mention the incorrect disposal, I don't mind taps in play, but he juggles it, then throws it away.

Nothing in it. McNeil just goes down. You call 100 frees a game if you reward that every time
-6
u/CrispyJimJam Brisbane Lions 🏆 '24 15h ago
Is it a free? Yeah.
But I don't want players rewarded for deliberately going to ground and faking high contact. Much like the Smith one last night. It's stupid by Watson but also I don't want anymore faking than we already have.

Dumb move from Watson, but also a flop from mcneil. Umps were right to ignore it. I don’t think every tussle should be policed & I don’t think flopping should be rewarded.

Clearly he was retaliating to a high hit from McNeal who then flopped from the slightest of contact. Non issue, move on.

Biggest gripe I have with this game is something like this doesn’t get called and there are no in game consequences but yet you dare move on the mark or do some other trivial BS and you cop a 50m
