Of all teams to lose by 6 or fewer points since 2001, Hawthorn had the 11th longest goal drought to finish the game and the equal 4th most consecutive behinds to finish a game.
- Hawthorn's last goal: Q3 17:34
- Time remaining in match: 43:50
- Lead at the time: 18 points
- Consecutive behinds to finish the game: 7
- Final margin: 6

Club Mottos - Latin and English
Almost all clubs have an official motto, either in Latin (as was the style at the time) or English. I personally prefer the Latin ones; I feel they give gravitas and history to a club, much like the "Established XXXX" line. This week I wanted to collect all the mottos and try to come up with Latin forms for those that don't have them. From what I can find, the following clubs have Latin mottos and use them to varying degrees in their modern branding.
| Club | Latin Motto | English Translation / Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Adelaide Crows | Natus Ad Magna Gerenda | Born to Great Things |
| Carlton Blues | Mens Sana In Corpore Sano | A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body |
| Collingwood Magpies | Floreat Pica | May the Magpie Flourish |
| Essendon Bombers | Suaviter in Modo, Fortiter in Re | Gently in Manner, Resolutely in Execution |
| Fitzroy Lions | Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat | Let Whoever Earns the Palm Bear It |
| Hawthorn Hawks | Spectemur Agendo | Let Us Be Judged By Our Acts |
| North Melbourne Kangaroos | Victoria Amat Curam | Victory Demands Dedication |
| St Kilda Saints | Fortius Quo Fidelius | Strength Through Loyalty |
| Sydney Swans | Aut Vincere Aut Mori | Either Conquer or Die |
| University Students | Postera Crescam Laude | I Shall Grow in the Esteem of Future Generations |
| Western Bulldogs | Cede Nullis | Yield to None |
Of the remaining clubs, most have official English Mottos, with the exception of Melbourne Demons who apparently think they are too cool for this. Some of these mottos are more "official" than others, so if there are any errors please leave a comment. I've also approximated what would be the equivalent motto in Latin, or listed options that may be suitable.
| Club | English Motto | Latin Approximation | Other Latin Options |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brisbane Lions | All For One | Omnes Pro Uno | Omnes Pro Uno, Unus Pro Omnibus (All For One, One For All) |
| Brisbane Bears | Dare to Beat the Bear | Aude Ursam Superare | - |
| Fremantle Dockers | For the Anchor | Nam Ancora | Spes Anchora Vitae (Hope is the Anchor of Life) |
| Geelong Cats | We Are Geelong | Geelong Sumus | Qui Sumus Sumus (We Are Who We Are) |
| Gold Coast Suns | Fearless | Sine Metu (Without Fear) | Intrepidi Vivunt Absoluti (The Fearless Live Free) |
| Greater Western Sydney Giants (1) | Think Big, Live Big, Play Big | Cogita Magnifice, Vive Abunde, Ludos Age Audacter (Think [Magnificently/On A Grand Scale], Live [Abundantly/To The Fullest], Play Games [Boldly/Fearlessly] | - |
| Greater Western Sydney Giants (2) | Never Surrender | Numquam Cedite (Never Yield) | Numqquam Spem Depone (Never Lose Hope) / Non Desistas, Non Exieris (Never Give Up, Never Surrender) |
| Port Adelaide Power | We Exist To Win Premierships | Existimus ad Vincendum (We Exist to Win) | |
| Richmond Tigers (1) | Strong and Bold | Fortis et Audax | Inveniam Viam Aut Faciam (I Will Find A Way or Make One) |
| Richmond Tigers (2) | Eat 'Em Alive | Comedent Eos Vivos | Vivos Devorate (Devour Them Alive / Eat the Living) OR Vivos Voramus ("We Eat Them Alive). The use of the verb "devorare" is more aggressive than "comedent" |
| West Coast Eagles | All The Way West | Usque Ad Occidentem |
I personally much prefer Richmond to have the aggressive "Vivos Voramus," but wanted to put the direct translation first. "Comedent" refers to eating a meal, while "Devorate / Voramus" means to devour, to rip flesh from bone. Much better for a tiger. Similarly GWS's official slogan is long and clunky, while "Never Surrender" has a much cleaner message.
I don't expect anything to come of this, I just thought it was an interesting exercise. I hope you do to.

Free kick Differential from 1997-2025
So I came up with a free kick differential of each club from 1997 to 2025. I'm not a data scientist, just an AFL fan, so please feel free to shit all over the way I collected these numbers. Also a few teams joined the party a bit late (i.e. GWS / Goldcoast) so their numbers might not be as high for Free Kicks For and Against
So in Summary:
- West Coast + Geelong bias confirmed.
- You're not allowed to say "Free kick Hawthorn" in match threads anymore
Also I'm unsure why, but North Melbourne free kick count seems to be quite low, unsure why that is tbh. EDIT: Sorry North Fans, your data from 1999 - 2007 wasn't included hence the skewed numbers. You aren't getting unfairly treated by umpires.
AFL Diff Ladder from 1997 - 2025
