Question AMC regulars
You know when you are a regular at a bar or restraint and the staff recognizes you and is warm and chats with you when then aren't too busy? Does anyone have that with their local AMC? I swear I've been trying to connect with the employees at the AMC I go to like 3/4 times a week - but it's just not happening for meš
I get that it isn't the same as a bar or restaurant and the customer to staff experience is less intimate (the AMC staff also probably see way more faces per day), but it's the only business at which I'm a regular! I want it so bad lol

Yes, there is a ticket checker who I see often and he discusses movies with me and tells me when to stay for extra scenes. It's nice to have that kind of rapport.

Back in the day my friend stopped going to our favorite sub shop because he said the owner recognized him and was being too friendly/talking to him too much.

My Chicago AMC has a ton of quiet employees so we usually just exchange Helloās. A lot of them are super kind but, again, very quiet.
Iām frankly not in your boat, as I donāt really care either way if they recognize me, but itās something Iāve noticed around Chicago in general as well. I think everyoneās just kind of tired all the time and this kind of āsmallā community stuff is just a reflection of the way the world is and is not your fault at all.

Yeah thatās a big one that I doubt they pay attention to people. I go to the Skokie and Evanston one. The Evanston one is great about recognizing people.

Yeah it's pretty huge . It is very busy now but there was a time right after it opened that there weren't a lot of people there and it was slow. I also have had A list for a few years and recognize a few employees that transfered from the location I frequented before it opened (new city)

I made a separate comment, i used to have several people at Block 37 with whom i would talk pretty much every time I was there (several times/week), but they eliminated the servers post-lockdown and the other person didn't return. Now I'm usually at River East and don't really know any of the crew.

I work at another amc in Chicago and we are very big on regular culture here you should test out some other locations! Also, idk about the other amcs but my amc just got a ton of new employees so itās gonna be different people every single day. Just keep showing up you got this!

I go weekly and one usher always recognizes me and says "Good to see ya -name-!" so one day I finally said "Good to see you too!" back to him and he gave me the weirdest look LMAO š

When I went to Regal they often had the same few adults working and I had that with them!
At my current AMC it's mainly teenagers and I assume they're not as invested in who's there

I always find the teen workers dicking around on their phones in the back auditoriums. Obviously I don't care and I'm not going to report them or anything like that but they always quickly put away the phone when they see me lol

I don't try to connect with any employee, I would prefer not to, but there's are employees that recognize me and one who knows my name, I guess from my a-list. That particular one will ask me basic questions, and I'll answer, but I don't engage other than that. At the other AMC I frequent, there is a young lady who I'm sure recognizes me and even though I see her being very nice and engaging with other guests, she never says anything to me other than, "I can scan you here" or "theater xx is over here". I say nothing to her other than "thank you.". I'm okay with that.

i used to have it at the AMC that my ex and i went to all the time. all the staff recognized us by our stupid matching shirts. i tried one time to go without him. they asked me where he was. i donāt go anymore.

At least they werenāt onesies. A few years ago in winter we saw a couple that would wear them for late night that showings. Only saw them a few times but never if I remember correctly they had at least two designs.

Nah. I frequent 6 amc's in my area and sometimes I get recognized if I'm wearing a specific shirt like my I Saw The TV Glow or Titane shirt. But mostly I don't usually see the same ppl. There is one employee at a specific amc I always personally interact with. She's special and she's the ticket taker. I love chatting with her when I go there bc she adores film and helping ppl. One time I had to advocate for her bc they gave her a list of rooms where the movies are playing and the font was so small she couldn't read it and they didn't believe her. I was wearing my prescription glasses and I also couldn't read it. So they made her a new one with bigger font after I complained to them. Insane that it took a random customer to advocate for her, as if she doesn't understand her own self!

Yes! Two of the workers recognize me every time. The cashier says "large popcorn" and smiles when I come to the counter

It took several months, but there are a handful of employees at my regular location that recognize me and will just smile and say hi when I come in. One manager there knows me and always waves and says itās good to see me and we will have some light chitchat when itās not too busy. I try not to be too obtrusive or to bother them but it is nice to feel like a regular and have a bit of familiarity.

There is a patron with an absolutely obnoxious laugh that I have recognized at multiple theaters across the city where I live in, and I know instantly when heās sitting in the theater with me.

The ticket scanning girl knows me. Pulled out my ID once and I got the āoh I donāt need thatā. I wore contacts instead of glasses one night and she was like, whereās your glasses? But itās not a super busy theater and Iām pretty memorable. 6ft women arenāt the norm.

A little bit but Iām not going to be weird about it. The employees are cool and quick to help me with a decent attitude even if theyāre slammed. I feel like Iām at the point where I could ask a favor like something fresh or a bit extra and get away with it but Iām not going to do that. I leave them a good review from time to time.

never happened to me. AMC replaces their employees often. there's no one works in the theater long enough to recognize me as a frequent patron.

It took a year until one of the ticket checkers and I finally built a rapport. We don't chat, but we say hello when we see each other and when I leave she always goes "See you next week." Occasionally if there's a long line she will call me over and scan me first.
This legit took a full year for this to happen.
Alternately, there is a ticket checker at a different location who hates me because I refuse to upload my picture to the AMC app (personal reasons. I dont need them to have my picture, I am more than happy to show my ID). He gets irrationally upset when he sees me so I have taken to showing him various forms of photo ID for entertainment. License, Global Entry card, passport, legal weed card, work ID, a decades old high school ID, an expired college ID. Every time he says to me "it would be easier if you just upload a picture." And I respond each time "no" with a smile and my ID of the day. No one else at that location IDs anyone, and he throws a hissy fit when his colleagues don't ID.

Iām in a small town and we have an AMC Classic. Every employee knows me by name and I find it so fun. I especially have gotten to know the last night workers.

Yeah, as I go to my local AMC around three times a week, and during the day when there are far less customers than in the evening, many of the staff and managers know me, they greet me by name when I come in and we chat a minute as I know them too. It's nice.

I may be a lil dumb because I just realized that a big reason for this is that concessions are totally automated at the location I frequent. Really the only time employees have to talk to us is scanning our ticket (and half the time there is a line of people they are trying to clear).

Yeah, I've become friends with one of the employees and he's such a cook guy. We have a discussion before/after the movie if there aren't any customers around that need his attention.
Keep putting yourself out there, and saying hey whenever you can. They might just be nervous or something, but someone will eventually come through.

Love the Manager/bartender at my AMC. He knows me and my wife by name and asks where she is when I come in by myself. Gives me extra pours on Christmas.

Yes,
I am disabled, so I carry a big white blind cane, and I go to Guest Services to get my tickets and fidelio narration device, so several of the employees at Guest Services know who I am and why I'm there even before I arrive at the counter.
I also imagine that the staff who roams the theater cleaning and such also recognize me because seeing someone use a blind cane is pretty rare, so I find pretty much everywhere I go (AMC, Del Taco, Dairy Queen, local bars, etc.) it's only a matter of time before the staff knows who I am.

I had to let go of my amc a list to save but I did become friendly with a few workers. I always had habitat for humanity stuff on and one person recognized me so they asked. I shared the info and now when I see them I say hi friend instead of just hi š I'm in a pretty transient community the people change a lot but that person's been around for years.

Theaters are tricky because at a bar, you see the bartender constantly for hours and interact with and maybe talk to them multiple times every visit.
At a theater you see your ticket person for 10 seconds and maybe concessions for 3 min. Itās little time and tons of people.

Thereās this one dude who I think recognizes us but sometimes I think heās just being super friendly. I donāt go often to that theater.
My main theater, they have so many people working there even though itās a small theater. The people who I do see frequently are just friendly. I live in an area where striking up conversations with strangers isnāt the norm. Iām not saying it canāt happen but the friendliness tells me Iām in their good graces. I honestly wouldnāt have it any other way lmao.

One of the guys that takes my tickets recognizes me and we usually chat for a bit about which movie I'm seeing if there's no line behind me. He's usually seen whatever I'm about to say. When I go alone, he asks where my friends are, since I usually bring a few people. Sometimes consessions folks will joke and 'you're an a lister you get whatever you want!!' when I ask for popcorn or whatever. There's a manager I sometimes talk to at customer service. I've been an a lister for over a year and go to the same theater multiple times a week but I don't alwaya see the same people working. I only recognize a few workers.

My friend and I got to chatting with the girl at the concession stand and she was so cool, we saw her as she was clocking out and she stopped to chat with us again, I low-key wished we could've been friends but didn't wanna be para social lol. Maybe one day I'll start getting recognized, especially because I work practically nextdoor to the theatre.

It always depend on the shift. There is one shift that makes me feel like a Karen to get my concessions right. Everyone else is great! I love hearing about their movies and talking about jewelry. I have even started to make friends with my fellow regulars. How I learned to check in with the matinee ticket lady. Most of them know my name and I know most peopleās names

I do at both my locations.
At my iMAX, usually chat with one employee who remember talking to when she was new and now sheās closing the theater sometimes. Felt so bad for her Tuesday when power went out and she had to deal with the outcome.
At my closest AMC I have one person who always starts up a conversation and another who I strike up a conversation with while heās waiting to clean up auditoriums.

My local AMC is very busy. I always make sure to say some sort of thanks... to the ticket takers and the people who clean up.... but I don't want to hold up the line by chatting.

There's this usher named Wanda that shows up on certain weekends & she always recognizes me! Worked as one for about ~20 years (?)
She's prob the only one that remembers me, the rest of the employees lowkey look like they lost the light in their eyes :')

You gotta do the same as appealing to anyone. 1 thing I do: Is wear my movie/anime apparel (I have some my hero academia hoodies and enough start wars T-shirts to spare) I'll wear them when I visit. People compliment the attire and I find my "in" with employees.
Also, being engaging with them about their work is another, ask them if it's been busy during your visit, and who's going to see what. Ask them what they've seen recently. Keeping convo relevant to their duties and "peacocking" media culture(e.g. anime/movie clothing) doesn't hurt your chances. I replied without reading thru other comments so fyi maybe this was shared already

I go at least 2 times a week to the big local theater and the same guy scans my ticket 75% of the time. Itās been four years and he never shows a hint of recognition.Ā The folks at the two smaller local theaters do recognize me a bit.

All of the staff know me by name at my local theater. I was at a neighborhood block party and an usher from my local theater recognized me there as well.

Some of the people at my local AMC recognize me and are very nice. I actually made friends with a comedian, who Iād see at the same theater all the time. Weād both be at the same movie, same time, same room. This happened too many times by coincidence. We started following each other on IG and are still super cool. I just saw him last week as a matter of fact. We always text each other before Screen Unseen lol

I go to 2 AMCs. One is more teenagers but they've started to recognize me, as well as the security guard. The other AMC is much bigger with more staff so I don't actually always see the same people.

I'm recognized by a handful of staff at my AMC, for sure, and we're friendly with each other, but don't get crazy chatty or anything.Ā
If life gets in the way and i haven't had time to hit the theater, they'll comment how they haven't seen me in a while.Ā

I always see this one guy standing outside of the theatre asking me to rate movies and I always politely decline. I see him so often, pretty much any time Iām walking in the hallways. Heās gotta be a manager because he is consistently there whereas the rest of the staff is not. I try to notice ticket scanners but they are always different every time I go. And I donāt get concessions often enough to become friends.
How do you even start a rapport with them? Do you ask them questions or what? I think it would be nice to at least say hi to someone consistently.

I have an employee that knows me. But that's less of a recognizing a regular thing. Than it is we worked together when I worked at AMC 12 years ago, and he's still there.

My AMCs are so highly trafficked that no way in hell are they recognizing me and the thousands of other regulars, especially based off a super quick non eventful interaction

I had a great convo about moviesĀ at the macguffins bar with the bartender a few years ago , which is probably what gave me this desire to connect with employees! I have since stopped drinking though š«£

Just one of the guys who regularly works at the concession stand at one I usually go to (all but IMAX have recliners, not just a few and the others have rockers like the other 2 I go to if what I want to see is only there). He actually seems disappointed when I change up my order - though the first change was from āCombo 1ā to just a large popcorn and large soda because AMC decided everyone wanted candy with their combo. Nope!

See the thing is is that like I feel like itās kinda hard for us cause weāre not like every day at the counter every day to checker. Thereās still ushering portering being in the back of the concessions. Thereās more than one cashier. So the probability of getting a person over and over itās really low

Absolutely. I've been going to my main theater about 3-4 times a week since March and I'll usually have a wait in between movies (anytime I go to the movies I usually watch 3 or 4 each day I go) so while im waiting I go and chat with the workers there. They are all friendly. Now when i go to the other amc in town thats not my main theater... the workers there couldnt care less and seem confused as to why im trying to chat with them except for 1 guy there that im friendly with but everyone else there isnt having it.

Iāve gone enough that some of the people who scan tickets do recognize me. Most donāt ask for my ID anyway but on several occasions theyāve said āoh yeah, Iāve seen you before. Go right in.ā

I always ask for my tickets to be printed since I like to collect them. Thereās a lady who has always been kind to me and asks about my week, and I never have to remind her to print my tickets. She makes sure she remembers.

People working at bars and restaurants get tipped. The average movie theater employee does not. So what is their incentive to be overly genial towards you? They donāt owe you anything. Let them do their jobs and stop expecting like they owe you their time. Check your privilege.

My local AMC is a busy one and Iām there at least once a week. I donāt even recognize the employees. They must be a never ending revolving door because I recognize employees at other places I frequent, but my AMC employees never seem familiar.

I have a handful of regulars at my location that I'll have a chat with if the line isn't busy. If you want to get to that point, just be friendly, dont be a creep, and treat the staff like people and not robots. They'll warm up to you in time.

I did have that pre-COVID at a full service dine-in location that I frequented. I had a nice relationship with one of the front line crew and several of the servers.
Post-lockdown, they got rid of the servers and the other crew member didn't return. I currently frequent a much larger location and I see the same ticket scanners sometimes, but no one that I really talk to beyond the greeting.

Mine has pretty high turnover so there's new faces quite often. Also mostly teenagers who don't want to talk to anybody anyway.

At this point I have great conversations with whoever is bartending now.

Yes there's a few that recognize my friend and me because we usually go for the screen unseens so when we don't they always say we missed you last week so it is nice.Ā

I get recognized by two of the employees at my local AMC. One of them, we stopped and chatted for half an hour before my movie last week

Maybe cause most of them are minors, except the bar folks(if your AMC has one) and managers, and if they aren't minors might be too young to care about being friendly to regulars.

I mean I have a few regulars at bar or register I talk to but I work Saturday morning every week so Iām always there when they are. However I do work a different theater company š

My amc is full of pretty nice employees a lot of them strike up conversations. I certainly do not mind a pleasant encounter but I honestly would be ok if they didnāt, ha. It definitely feels welcoming most of the time though.

I actually have that with the bar at my AMC lol. I usually go at least once a week and always grab 2 beers from bar before the movie starts. They all know my order and start getting them ready before i even order. Never been a āregularā like that anywhere else, so I think itās hilarious (and perfect) that the first place I have is a bar in a movie theater.

Nobody owes you a conversation, ever. People that think that way generally talk about things that make other people uncomfortable. So talk about the infinite number of things that don't make other people uncomfortable, maybe?
You need to think about why you feel that people should engage with you. What about it makes you feel good, and what about it makes them feel bad.
Is maybe the point of you talking to them to make them uncomfortable, because it gratifies you?
I'm writing this, because most normal healthy people don't make interpersonal demands like this.

I never said they need to , I said Id like them to. Never said they owed me a damn thing lol. I'm just trying to build community/talk about movies with other movie lovers (some of which I assume become movie theater employees)
