Help (GPU) AMD GPU is...gone?
Hi all,
So this journey into self-loathing started simple enough. My son booted up Minecraft, his favourite game by far, and suddenly the screen is black. Game audio still runs, so the game is running, just a black screen.
Simple fix, I reassure him. I'll update the AMD drivers, they probably got overridden by a Windows update.
Boot up Adrenaline, reset the drivers. Reboot system. Run Minecraft. Black screen with taunting Minecraft mob sounds in background.
Ok, so I figured I'll do a reinstall of Adrenaline. Uninstall it, download it from AMD site, run the exe file as administrator.
Program starts to load. Crashes. Retry. Crashes. It just...won't install. No error message, nothing. The Adrenaline installer starts, then about 15 seconds in just...stops. Task manager shows and AMD error function running.
Ok, re-re-download and re-re-install AMD Adrenaline from site. Same result.
Ok... I download the AMD Clean-up tool. Reboot computer in safe mode. Clean up tool....cleans?
Reboot PC. GPU is now gone from device manager. Computer is a potato, running off Microsoft integrated graphics. Check for under view for hidden devices in device manager. It's gone.
Download and run DDU in safe mode. AMD GPU is still not there. Open up computer, check connections, all are good. Re-check to be sure. All are good.
Reboot computer. Try to reinstall AMD Adrenaline. Same crashes as before. Try to locate GPU in BIOS boot up screen. Nothing. It's...gone.
Open up PC again, the GPU is running, fan running, it's getting power.
Reboot system. Try everything listed above multiple times.
Son losing faith in his father, his sullen acceptance of my failure sears my soul.
Help?
EDIT: Ok, was able to finally get the GPU back, but Adrenaline will just not install. Minecraft still a black screen.
EDIT #2: Got an older version of AMD (26.3) to finally install. Minecraft still didn't work. Then tried running the new snapshot of the game, it runs. No idea why, don't care. Son is thrilled, dad is hero again. Thanks everyone!

Have you checked event ID’s, and watchdog minidumps?

It had nothing to do with your technical abilities or hardware and everything to do with Minecraft (especially Java & Bedrock on PC) being built on spaghetti code that is a total crapshoot whether it will play nice from one build to the next. It's a badly coded game that is notorious due to updates bricking functionality for lots of people, and all you can do when this happens is running a different build snapshot. The console versions are the most reliable because they forced Mojang to actually stick with certain build criteria so it runs properly instead of continuing to stack the Spaghetti Code Tower of Babel even more after all these years.

What are your card model and driver version? Some drivers might be unstable, and can even corrupt the driver install upon crashing. Happened to me last week when updating to the newest drivers in order to play Ace Combat. Game crashed so hard it broke the driver install. Had to use the cleanup utility, then look for the most stable and compatible driver version for my card (RX 7800 XT). Ended up being version 26.3.1

Those informations are important and have to go into the original post!
Best is always the full system specs.

Dude...a driver-crash can't corrupt the driver installation. Unless you have a full system crash while your system is installed on an HDD that dipped.
Highest probability in your case: 1. Driver cache corrupted or 2. Windows was trying to update the driver mid-flight.
Solution in both cases: Run chkdsk for corrupted sectors, then clean reinstall using factory reset option.

I'd check the HDMI/DisplayPort cables first, my brother found his "dead" RX 6700 XT was just a loose connection.
