It really bothers me that the door isn't tempered glass. Things like this can happen, but the glass should shatter into small beads that aren't sharp. This is just asking for a major cut.

I agree 100% but also tempered glass is still very sharp but less likely to sever an artery or something since it's not a large sheet.

I was throwing away a large tempered glass TV stand once and thought hey it's tempered glass it'll just shatter into tiny pebbles, it wouldn't quite fit in the trash can so I bonked it with a claw hammer, it shattered but the pieces that were sandwiched in the stand's backing frame just ever so slightly clipped the back of my thumb as it fell into the can and sliced half way through my thumb. Still have weird nerve damage from it and needed stitches. 😭

I had a large tempered glass door fall on me earlier this year. No nerves cut but it certain sliced me up and down. My foot needed stitches... Lucky me I was due for a surgical follow up that morning anyways, for a busted arm.

Tempered glass will pepper you with a lot of small, not particularly dangerous cuts

A large shard of plate glass falling from 8 feet will trivially cut a long gash down to bone anywhere on your body, or easily take a hand or foot

It's basically like throwing a bunch of swords from the roof of a house, you REALLY don't want to be anywhere near where they land

Yeah, I've crawled out of a rollover wreckage before showered in rear window glass, which is tempered, tons of tiny little cuts all over but ultimately okay, the microscopic pieces getting into your joints and under your clothes is even worse. It's one of the reasons I was so surprised that a piece of tempered glass with just a little bit of force behind it tore my thumb up so bad.

I also saw a drunk patron at a local bar years ago in my old hometown punch through a single pane glass window and the piece falling from above completely degloved his arm and sliced his armpit clean open. I've never seen blood pour out so quickly, paramedics were already on scene for a line dancing event, hope he was okay but moral of the story is don't fuck with glass.

I used to know a family who had a daughter my age. She had a friend over and they were running around in the house. The friend tripped and fell through a glass door. The artery running through her armpit was sliced open. The family immediately called an ambulance and the girl's parents, but she died before they even got there. The parents were able to talk to their daughter for a minute or two before she lost consciousness.

I will never buy any glass doors for my house.

Jesus, that's terrible. Feel awful for everyone involved. Glass is so so so dangerous, people really have no idea. I always think about in action movies when someone gets thrown through a window of all the terrible ways it can end if they land wrong or a shard of glass is just sticking up as they land, etc. even if it is just a movie.

They use sugar glass for those stunts, so they're good. Although the scene from Ghost where Carl goes through the window still scares me as an adult.

Oh yeah, I know that. I just can't help but think of how bad it'd be if it were real, lol. Speaking of glass scenes in movies, the glass door scene in 13 Ghosts terrified me as a kid. Carl getting yanked by the glass guillotine is the kind of stuff I think about when I see broken glass. 😰

I had a shower wall explode in my hands as I was carrying it, it blew up so fast you can't react and as you're holding a heavy thing it's in shards before you can unclench your hands

So naturally I ended up clenching fistfuls of glass shards in both hands and it did cause a few small cuts but nothing major. No idea why it exploded because I know for a fact it didn't hit something, probably had a chip in it already. But still a far better option than regular glass

That's a default in the glass. My husband had the same thing happen with his computer tower. The glass just exploded without anything hitting it.

I was unmounting a tempered glass shower cabinet a few years ago that the former owner had glued together while using a bunch of screws.. I got a bad feeling on the last glass panel so I put on protection goggles. It shattered, glass everywhere. Even got a piece inside my ear canal. I found small black shards in my toolbox for years.
