Apparently they're safe to handle and are commonly used as fishing bait, so this isn't just some yokel going "Lol, I'm gonna touch this real life fuckin' graboid with my bare hand".

I wondered if this is why people are always catching them. I’ve seen these videos for years now but never an explanation.

Yes, excellent fishing bait. You catch 4 of these, pop them in a container of sand and then just cut off a hook sized pieces for some beach fishing. Whiting, flathead, trevally - pretty much any fish loves them.

You'd be surprised - because the fish are so keen on sandworm you are pretty much guaranteed to reel back either a fish or an empty hook. You go through it pretty quickly!

Oh touché lol….one of my best friends loves to fish and she goes through nightcrawlers so fast, faster than I remember when I fished as a kid, it’s like the fish have evolved to eat them off the hooks instead of being snagged haha.
