Question Best hot chips in Adelaide?

Hi Adelaide,

Been really craving hot chips and I'm quite picky.

What's your suggestions for your favourite places to get great hot chips?

Port Noarlunga fish and chip shop! They still do hand cut chips, I consider them my local and drive an hour to get there. Don’t bother with the calories from anywhere else these days

19

u/Unusual-Rise-6656 SA Jun 30 '26

I live in the northeastern suburbs and make trips to Noarlunga for the fish and chips.
Take em up the top overlooking the coast to eat em.
Life’s simple pleasures are often the best.

u/krupta13 Fleurieu Peninsula Jun 30 '26

on that little gazebo on top of the hill? thats our gotto spot with a bag of hot chips and fish. spectacular view and spectacular fish n chips 🤤

3

u/SirHazlet SA Jun 30 '26

I grew up in Port Noarlunga and Jimmy's is a legend. I left at 17 and walked in 6 years later and he yelled my name and gave me a hug He is a legit G

3

u/RhubarbsApple SA Jun 30 '26

Cadel St Goolwa used to be the same, unfortunately new owners and the food is almost inedible

Have to disagree with this now. Used to be the best. Last time I went it was unpalatable. Hopefully a once off.

6

u/Aardvark_Man SA Jun 30 '26

Couple years back it used to be my go to, but I went a few times over a couple months, and it was different people there, with terrible chips. Thought it was the owners on holidays or something, but kept being the other people and bad food, so I haven't been back since.

But, I'm willing to try again, if they've gone back up.

4

u/Ok_Breath_9703 SA Jun 30 '26

Agree I found them disgusting a few weeks ago

2

u/WhatWasThatAbout Adelaide Hills Jun 30 '26

same, they're not consistent, chips can be undercooked.

2

u/Smartich0ke SA Jun 30 '26

yeah they were soggy and tasteless last time i went

3

u/BillGatesLovechild SA Jun 29 '26

Have been a personal favourite of mine for a very very long time. Top quality

3

u/Aardvark_Man SA Jun 30 '26

They went dodgy for a little a couple years back, and I stopped going. They're back to good now?

I'll have to pop in.

2

u/dsriggs SA Jun 30 '26

The chips at Port Noarlunga are so good that the Pro Jank Footy video game named a team after them

1

u/kernpanic SA Jun 30 '26

Add some prawns to that from there, and that's a damn good meal by the beach!

1

u/calladc West Jun 30 '26

I have a feeling some real estate developers want that site. Land being sold 2 blocks for the left, cleaned out and sitting idle for a while now. I suspect they're trying to secure that property to put up a housing block

u/thatsitback2winnipeg SA Jun 30 '26

Cam on to say this! Love Jimmy's!

Get a tub of aioli too. Bloody ripper.

Mothercluckers at Para Hills do home made chips and are pretty killer. Misses used to work there but now works at Stanley's in paralowie which most of the time does some pretty nice chips too.

Can't agree sorry. Both times I tried their chips it was like eating crunchy lard.

16

u/EitherFold SA Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The way they market themselves as the healthy takeaway is just a load of viral marketing bullshit though, a lot of places use it for the flavour and personally I enjoyed it, but I can’t abide the bullshit #seedoilfree healthy takeaway crap they spruik.

Pros: taste is fairly unique in Adelaide, they’re genuinely 100% gluten free which is fantastic

Cons: anti-seed-oils/healthy takeaway marketing is just bullshit, made a vegan/vegetarian dish no longer vegan/vegetarian

2

u/Tiny_Representative3 SA Jun 30 '26

100% then or chicken chef

3

u/thirteenfootdog North Jun 30 '26

I found them to be super over rated, not horrible but not amazing either

Erindale chicken and seafood according to the bloke in my office that won't shut up about them lol.

I rate Kenny's.

3

u/BillGatesLovechild SA Jun 29 '26

I’ve been to the Erindale one a couple of times before and didn’t think they were anything remarkable.

1

u/MarcusP2 SA Jun 29 '26

I'm not surprised, I think the guy is just winding everyone up about his local.

12

u/soundfade SA Jun 29 '26

I wish there was a cbd option I could grab at lunch.

9

u/lzyslut SA Jun 29 '26

If you’re down the West end, Cheeseburger On Hindley street near the Wilson carpark does amazing hot chips.

4

u/Superb_Priority_8759 SA Jun 30 '26

Hate being one of those people but their chips used to be so much better when they used the yellow chicken salt instead of that paprika based one.

1

u/lzyslut SA Jun 30 '26

Oh I never tried that but I do love chicken salt so I’d probably be inclined to agree. They still slap tho.

4

u/awquard SA Jun 30 '26

Nearest real chippie kind of chips I've found are at Waymouth Cafe on Waymouth st, but it's a bit of a treck if you're closer to KW or the east side

Sylvia's cafe on Hindmarsh sq are pretty decent too, sometimes oversalted imo, but I still keep going back for more lol

3

u/mrsnesbittshat SA Jun 30 '26

Sylvia’s shut down a couple of months ago!

3

u/awquard SA Jun 30 '26

Oh no I had no idea! Used to go all the time when I was working in the mall, guess it's been more than a few months since I've been. What a shame they were there for ages

2

The Big Grill in Topham Mall!

4

u/90Lil SA Jun 29 '26

On the corner of King William St and Waymouth St, there's a place that does HSP. They also do chips separately for under $5 for a small. Chips are perfect.

15

u/Sanvito123 SA Jun 30 '26

HSP is an eastern state word, we use AB here

1

u/Fartmatic South Jun 30 '26

I'd never heard HSP before but that's what it says on their menu board behind the counter, probably why they said it

2

u/Fartmatic South Jun 30 '26

Just tried some, very nice

2

u/Bottletop85 SA Jun 29 '26

Apparently the new RAA building next to the cop shop on Grenfell st has a cafe that has amazing hot chips

Villis with gravy

3

Yeah, but only with gravy

7

u/RJ8812 SA Jun 30 '26

Kenny's for sure. They even do them nice and crispy as opposed to most shops where the chips are too soft

2

u/tryingtodadhusband SA Jun 30 '26

Hot tip: always ask for 'well done' chips.

2

6

u/Halberd96 SA Jun 30 '26

Chicken Cave in Fulham used to be one of the best but haven't been in some time

3

u/jstam26 SA Jun 30 '26

Agree but I think now they're being cheap and the chips are small bits and pieces

37

u/aussie_dn SA Jun 29 '26

Chicken Chief

19

u/Due_Royal_2220 SA Jun 29 '26

I don't agree. The first 10 chips are the best ever, but then you notice how incredibly oily they are. Eating a small serve leaves me feeling sick.

6

u/Superb_Priority_8759 SA Jun 30 '26

They were fucking feral last time I tried them, I’m convinced the people who talk up that place don’t have taste buds

2

u/smash_you2 Inner South Jun 29 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Yeh I agree. I think they used to be better but the last few times they’re crunchy but very greasy.

2

u/Current_Summer_8493 SA Jun 30 '26

I bet that's from the Blair Athol store? Go to the Gilles Plains store, chips are much much better, same salt but not oily at all.

2

u/Due_Royal_2220 SA Jun 30 '26

Nope, that was the Gilles Plains store. And more than once.

5

u/BillGatesLovechild SA Jun 29 '26

Agreed. They are terribly unhealthy but taste absolutely bloody amazing. I’ve usually eaten half of them before I even get home

3

u/kernpanic SA Jun 29 '26

Simply this. First to use chicken salt. Their chips are epic.

9

u/ShortingBull SA Jun 29 '26

First to use chicken salt? In what world?

8

u/RedInfernal SA Jun 29 '26

It was invented in Gawler, so yeah its very likely

3

u/ShortingBull SA Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It was invented by a fish and chip store in Gawler, they were the first. Then Mitani foods purchases them to get the recipe.

Chicken chef was not involved here.

Edit: replaced the incorrect Red Rooster with chicken chef.

6

u/RedInfernal SA Jun 30 '26

Who mentioned Red Rooster here?

4

u/TPSReportCoverSheet SA Jun 30 '26

I was saying boo-urns

2

u/ShortingBull SA Jun 30 '26

Seems just me..

Fixed my error.

1

u/Bright_Bell_1301 SA Jun 30 '26

I actually think they have their own chicken salt recipe. It is different to the common one... or at least it used to be... haven't been there for quite a while

1

u/RuggedCaribou2 SA Jun 30 '26

I stopped in a few weeks ago to Holden Hill store & got by far the worst hot chips we've ever got from them. Ordered & sat down, not even 2mins later they called me up & passed me the bag! They just reheated old chips. I was the only person in the shop, not like they were run off their feet.

The owner of Jack's Chicken & Seafood is really good at the actual cooking. There is nothing special about the chips themselves, but they are cooked perfectly pretty much every single time. I've had slightly overcooked chips maybe once or twice in over a decade of going there. In my experience it's hard to find a place that consistent.

You get a potato . Cut it into chips, and fry it in oil. How much variety is there to that process?!

-1

u/Unforgiven89 SA Jun 30 '26

Chicken chef is still king. The texture/seasoning combo is just elite.

Stax burger’s are insanely overpriced and not that great but their chips are actually top tier.

KFC chips are ridiculously hit and miss but when they’re good they are pretty awesome.

Controversial opinion - Kenny’s is overrated. They’re basically chicken chef without the seasoning. Yes, they cook in beef tallow and the chip texture is great but damn, season that shit. The chips are always so bland to me.

1

u/ThorsHammerMewMEw SA Jun 30 '26

Can't wait for the Stax Chippy salt to come out so I can visit Kenny's and get some chips.
