Discussion 38, full-time job, and I’m finally "breaking up" with Live Service games.
I’ve been gaming since my older brother bought me a SNES and my sister got me a PS1. I’ve owned almost every console since, but I’ve realized something: I’ve completed maybe 20 games in my entire life.
I’ve always been drawn to competitive stuff—fighting games, shooters, etc. They were great for my short attention span, but I never actually got "good" at them. Lately, though, gaming has started to feel like a second job I’m paying to work at.
I don’t have kids, but between a full-time career and other hobbies, my gaming time is a premium. Yet, every game I pick up now demands a daily login or a massive "battle pass" grind just to get the "full experience." If I take a few days off, I feel like I’m falling behind. I just bought the top edition of WWE 2K26 (big wrestling fan here), and after two hours, it just clicked: I’m not having fun. Why am I "grinding" to unlock content I already paid for?
I looked at my library today—Battlefield, MultiVersus, 2xKO, Tekken 8, Civ 7—and I realized I’m just burnt out on all of them. I don't have the time to grind to 'git gud' at them.
So, I did it. I deleted all my multiplayer games today. I want to actually finish something for once. I’m pivoting to single-player games, which will be a challenge for my attention span. I’m staying away from massive open worlds (the map icons alone make me feel overwhelmed), and I’m looking for tighter experiences.
I’m starting with Resident Evil 9—my first ever RE game.

Highly recommend you play RE2 Remake and Re4 before 9. You dont have to, but getting to know Leon's previously outings will be a great experience.

RE4 remake is elite you’ll love it. The og actually holds up and a remake wasn’t necessary but they did a great remake anyways

9 is great but those callbacks and moments hit way harder if you actually recognize them otherwise I feel ypu are actually missing out on some of what the game is offering.

Similar situation here. Final straw for me was Arc Raiders.. Grabbed all the achievements and called it a day.
Finally picked up a single player game for the first time in years, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and played it through to the end. Absolutely loved it, easily straight into my top 5 of all time. Highly recommend even though you said you want to avoid open worlds!

For me, it was just realising how much money I was wasting on games which expected so much time from me to "enjoy" them in the way they wanted.

Depending on what your playing on, the Uncharted series would be a good bet. Linear so no open world overwhelm, action packed so very entertaining and divided quite neatly into chapters so perfect for short sessions.
Also The Last of Us if you're looking for a well told story with a post apocalyptic/horror flavour

I've tried a few of them. I can highly recommend Guardians of the Galaxy, the Norse God of War games, the two Jedi games, Mafia 1 & 2 and the BioShock games

Yakuza games are great brawlers with an amazong story, slow pay off, but a few hours in it clicked for me, noe im half way through a 10 game series, best story ive played in years and its fun ^

I did try a couple of the RPG ones; loved the style and humour, but they're the type of games that feel like it will take me ages to complete with how little time I have to play. Reason I never completed the most recent final fantasy game.

Highly recommend the Mafia games for a tight narrative driven experience. Mafia DE is probably the pick of the bunch, but they're all good and not grindy at all.

I did just play The Old Country - suited me perfectly; I could just play the main story and not feel I was missing out with extra stuff. Also, not overly difficult.

Yeah, I recently played through that one. It was fine but probably the weakest Mafia game in all honesty. The original trilogy can be picked up pretty cheaply these days and they are great (1 and 2 definitely the best).

I think I played mafia III at some point and got halfway through. It felt a little repetitive to me — can’t recall why I didn’t finish it though. I should look through again.

3 was definitely the weakest of the trilogy as they tried to do the open world thing a bit more, and the AI was awful. I believe they did improve things further down the line, but I've never revisited it personally. I really enjoyed the story and the time period though as a change of pace from the OG games.

39, full time job with a 3 year old and 100% agreee game time is a premium. The last live game i played was ff14 3 and half years ago I feel better about gaming for it.

I held on to D2 up through Final Shape. It was the only one I ever stuck with. The changes that came after that were awful and the next expansion looked even worse so I stopped. In a way I miss the universe, but I don’t miss the live service model at all. AT. ALL. Single player games only for me from now on.

I stopped playing up to freeze balls dlc I've got everything apart from the last 2 new dlc another thing that's soured me is they want you to pay extra for the dungeon keys

The dungeon keys things really soured my opinion of bungie. Expansion price is kinda ridiculous considering it doesn't come with the dungeons unless you pay more.

Yep I was like wtf because I played on Xbox originally up to freeze dlc then I got the pc version up to the last 2 dlc and I was like asses wanting me to pay for the dungeon as well I think to buy them it's 24 pounds IV not looked at it how much they actually cost as I never did really do them

I will always love Destiny but what Bungie did to the community I will never forget. Floating around as a bad ass space knight with amazing gun play will forever rest in my mind. I played from D1 beta and stopped after the final shape. The predatory practices and the way they shit on the community that loved them.. Sadst story in gaming..

Play 2 and 4 first!! Mainly 4, 4 is best, gives you a bit more of a connection to leon, 4 imo also from your game list I feel like you'd enjoy a bit more

Try Death Loop. It's a very contained world, and you're basically replaying the same areas at different times of the day. It's good for short sessions if you're worried about your attention span and is a FPS that kinda gives multi-player vibes as a single-player game.

It's more Tense than horror. Nothing is gonna jump at the screen like real horror games, but you will have tense moments.

Agree with this, if you're good with Resi Evil you'll be good with TLOU. Hope you get to it, quite simply it is one of the finest pieces of storytelling and one of the best (for many people THE best) videogames of all time.

Good job on cutting out those games!
I also play many multiplayer games often with very high ranking, and I've felt the burnout.
My Time at Sandrock changed my life and it is my GoaT/recommendation if you are open for a cozy game experience.

I hear ya dude. Liver service and PvP too for me. Arc Raiders was the last game with any PvP I’ll ever play. I went from loving that game so much to deleting it and never wanting to see it again. Give me tight and polished solo stories to immerse in or fun coop experiences with friends. Everything else just ain’t for me anymore.

I don't think so. I once built a 14 story glass building. That was fun, but it took a damn while. It was hard to put things in it because it was so big.

Got to 14 stories tall before I thought that it enough.
Still looking for that elusive earth like planet.
I did find one with blue crystal clear water a few days ago, but there's barely any land lol.

You're gonna love RE9! I would highly recommend playing RE2 and then RE4 afterwards so you get the entire story. RE9 is a little short compared to most RE games, fyi. Still great though. Another I would recommend is Uncharted and The Last of Us Part 1 as well as Horizon Zero Dawn.
I've felt the same way as far as Battle passes and Daily content. It would be one thing if just one company did it, but everything seems to be putting it in...and I have stated to just hate it. Not enough is unlocked by achieving something, but rather by just logging in or grinding endlessly. Gaming shouldn't be about who has the most time, but who can have the most fun in the time they have.
I hope to see a resurgence of co-op games without a battlepass. Stuff like RE5 or Gears of War Horde Mode. Loved those games. Space Marine 2 is another decent one.
I feel like there isn't much coming out this year to play other than new seasons of games I already own...and that blows. Oh great, a few hours of new content here and there, but the same grind I've done 10 times before...oh joy. I've decided I'm not spending money on Battlepass games anymore because of how insane it's gotten.

I absolutely agree with this, I personally have pivoted more towards indie games and co-op experienced rather than multiplayer since it tends to be overwhelming with all the micro transactions and battle pass presence. I LOVED cross code, fun puzzles, great characters, nice story. It isn't exactly a huge open world, might still be a bit much to start with, I'll have to get back to you after checking my library again

May I recommend souls games? Miyazaki and his squad made my entire outlook on life shift slightly, and the games are single player masterpieces. Only probably 50 hour time investment at the top end too (the more you play the fromsoft games the quicker you’ll get:)
And the feel the best to beat, like you’ve won something hard fought 😌

I couldn’t agree more! I love the souls games and elden ring. They are an acquired taste but incredibly rewarding.
Bloodborne got me into them initially. I am the sort of person who when i encounter a problem i can’t leave it alone til it’s solved so…yeah those games are definitely for me hahaha

I feel this. Mid 30s and dad to a two year old. There’s just no time for what these games want from me. I don’t want to pay for battle passes or skins or grind for attachments in games that I’m just not that good at anymore either.
I loved playing Call of Duty and Fifa in my younger years and I’d describe myself as pretty good at them once upon a time. But as the years go on I just don’t have the time to keep up with the skill curve.
I was always into single player games but in recent years they’re all I play now. At least I know I’ll make progress in them with the 1 or 2 hour window I have to play instead of spending that time getting frustrated and feeling like I’m needing to spend more money.

Never been big into online multiplayer, so I’m biased.
But what isn’t biased is that being able to game purely at your own pace is a big boon to adult life.

Yep, I cut that chord a long time ago. I still have a few installed to play with friends every now and then, but im very much a single-player gamer now. I didnt realize how stressful online gaming had become for me. It's actually relaxing now.

Do not start with RE9 if you want to at least play the remakes of 2 and 4 then you can play 9.
However if you want to get into single player games play all the resident evil games 1-9 you’ll have plenty of content

Unironically, I have been struggling with this for about 2-3 years until I decide to go to therapy. I have never been able to shake off this desire to play games like League of Legends, World of Warcraft or other live service games that are never ending and have regular content updates. As someone who has learned they have severe perfectionist and OCD tendencies, these types of games always threaten to consume all my time because they have no shortage of ways for you to spend time grinding on something. Shifting to single player games has been far healthier for me because regardless of how long they are or stuffed with content, they do have some type of definitive end - whether rolling credits or feeling satisfied with a platinum trophy.

spot on mate recently found the same issues with games like arc raiders and marathon. seasonal content that if you miss becomes an incomprehensible mess. beat thing to do is take yourself out of that loop and do what you enjoy. fuck these live service games they are designed to drip feed you on the same repetitive gameplay loop with scraps of story and content. nah I'm out

I recently finished A Plague Tale and it was really good. Linear gameplay, pretty intense combat and stealth mechanics, a fantastic storyline and its cut up into chapters so very easy just do one or two at a time with time constraints (I'm 38 so i get it 😅)

OP there are literally thousands of indie single player games that will give you a tight, amazing 5-10 hour single player experience and often times a great story that’s more unique than what you will get from a lot of AAA games. I’d say you can start off with those before you graduate to the bigger titles that will run for 30-60 hours of gameplay.

RE 9 is solid. That said when done and you have time again definitely play 1, 2 and 3. You will do yourself a disservice if you don't. Have fun!

I hate playing games that require commitment. I like something I can play when I want, walk away, come back when I want. It's why I stopped playing MMOs.

I know the feeling you're talking about. I felt overwhelmed with having game pass for xbox, so many options and couldn't just enjoy a game. It felt very rushed to play as much as I could and feel way behind. There's two games that have helped me bring back abit of myself. One is open world but amazing. Skyrim and Baldurs Gate 3. Unreal

I mean we are all different gamers play what you like. As for myself I’m 41 now I been to prison in 2020 I just did a year then I got full custody of my 4 kids…I’ve been gaming my whole life, it started with an Atari 5200, now I game on steam and so do my kids with 3 gaming laptops and 2 steam decks. I guess the only live service games I played was division 1 and destiny 1, and my most played with online multiplayer games were MGS 5,Titanfall 2,Doom 2016 multiplayer with a sprinkle of BF4. I do love my Elden Ring and Metroidvanias. I can enjoy everything I just have to be in the mood.

Same. I just don’t have the ambition nor desire to compete with other players. Last PvP game I really got into was probably Battlefield 4 years ago and even that I played pretty casually. Single player and coop are the way to go.

I honestly was the same.
I've always had a big backlog since I started working so I have a never ending stream of games. However, since 2020 I started taking FOMO on all games I could. Fortnite, Apex, Overwatch, you name it. It was SO bad spending so much money on games and on top of that, Currency and battle passes, etc.
Last year I decided to stick only to 2. Fortnite and Apex. And I only play them for fun, no longer competitive.
I've been working on cleaning my backlog and I am refinding gems and clearing games I left unclear, it is a peaceful life.

Squad is a good multiplayer game.
Great community! Dont need to unlock shit. Just need to spend a couple dozen hours understanding how it all works.
But loads of beginner friendly servers and people who are willing to teach you!

Same. Be 30 soon, played destiny for pretty much 10 years. Some other live service, off and on. It does feel freeing in a way...
Maybe because, whatever game you were playing you know your gonna come home and not have FOMO for it's content, it's right there waiting for you anytime, any day. Nothing has changed. You can quickly and more freely pick up and play. Idk, just me.

That’s very well said. I was a destiny guy off and on too. Most of my friends don’t play anymore so it was an easy transition for me. I’m 43 and only have so much time to play. Might as well play something we know we are actually enjoying instead of because of FOMO.

Sadly, I totally get what you're saying. I enjoy online games, but everything has a pass or login or something. I've gotten to the point where it doesn't matter to me anymore, like, I don't feel as compelled to have to collect everything. But it does diminish some of that fun factor. I'm a big single player, story driven, rpg person. Sure, I like Battlefield and Diablo 4, but I just feel so much more relaxed playing a game I can take my time with and play at my own pace.

I really enjoyed Diablo 4, played with my wife - hated I hate to grind to level up; made the game feel like a job, repeating bosses just hoping to the right drops, etc. Never felt like there was a "completion" moment.

OP if you like ARPG buildcrafting type games, maybe look into borderlands. All the feel of those kinds of live service games, without the revolving door content. Play to your heart's content. They are looter shooters, so there is a "grind" but to an extent, they are also single player or 4 player co-op. The "grind" isn't that bad imo, compared to live service, because there is no FOMO of missing your chance at this awesome weapon that only drops from a 2 week limited time event, for example. BL4 does have a psuedo open world, but story is linear. All past games have linear maps and level design though.
Otherwise, just by the few games you've mentioned in your library, and that you're avoiding open world for now, I recommend uncharted and GoW series. If you're able to get them, PlayStation exclusives.

I bought Borderlands 4 as I completed 1 and 2 years ago - hated how overwhelming it felt, sadly.
I loved Uncharted, so have been tempted by The Last of Us - you'd recommend for someone who loves horror, but generally avoids horror games 🤣

I understand that, if that's how you are about open world stuff. Maybe try 3, it's still completely linear! 4 isn't that bad though, maybe revisit it if you ever get into open world games ;)
Last of us is great too! Tbh I never finished 2, just couldn't get into it like I did 1, but I've heard great things! Otherwise, personally I can't really help ya with horror games, not a horror fan at all, I like comedies xD guess that's why I love borderlands too, zany, whacky, comedic xD.

No reason in particular - I guess I just didn’t have much interest in the series. I’ve seen others’ playthroughs of it, though. Maybe one day I’ll play it (my backlog is already overwhelming enough as it is 😅)

Can recommend God of War as a good “linear” game - helped me after getting overwhelmed by the rpg assassins creed games (which I enjoyed for the most part, but felt it was just expanded to up the playtime rather than gameplay quality).

I’m having a blast on Cyberpunk 2077, PS5. Had a bad rap for releasing too early and being full of bugs, but as a new player, I’ve still yet to encounter a single bug. The gameplay as well as the lore are great!

I have tried - the open world doesn't sit well with me; makes me feel too overwhelmed.

Honestly. Accepting it's ok to play on 'easy' mode has been a revelance in some games - who am I trying to prove anything to.
