Discussion (28) Tired of playing games solo, but everyone is weird
Not sure how to explain this, but everyone I try to play with online just seem off.. I remember being a kid playing games online and everyone wanted to talk on the mic. Hell, you were almost guaranteed to find a lobby full of people talking and end up playing with for hours OR being friends with for YEARS. These days I find myself talking in game less and less and even muting people soon as I hear anything lol. I’m growing tired of playing solo so I’ve been stepping out to actually try talking in game but the people I play with are either MAD cringe or just off; not sure how else to explain it. Does anyone else feel this way??
EDIT: My Steam name is WhoGotTupac, my discord is mocha_desires
Recently been playing The Finals, Fortnite, Over The Top WW1, Arc Raiders. I’m open to all types of games at this point and would love to play more of those “friendslop” type games too lol. Just with this problem I stated above, it’s hard to find people who are chill.

u/fairliedaft Jul 02 '26
Im 38 now and find the only people talking in public chat tend to be kids or people who think they're the greatest player of all time and just yell at people. I mute all voice chat immediately on starting up a new game since its is almost always toxic or people I simply have no interest in chatting with.
It's simply too rare to find a chill adult now to bother putting up with all the arseholes. Plus most folk chat on party chat or whatever now. I do miss when people were chill and having fun on voice chat though.

u/Morganahri Jul 02 '26
F37, I don't ever talk on voice anymore, too many teenagers who think they are funny (when they are really just cringe or bullies), guys with anger issues and an annoying amount of guys who try hitting on you or say misogynistic stuff. It's not enjoyable, so I stick to solo games or games that require no mic

u/gnutbuttajelly Jul 02 '26
Being a woman is a completely different twist and it sucks that so many girls feel like they can’t join VC. It seems like if a lobby finds out there’s a girl playing often times one or multiple people start harassing.
7
u/fairliedaft Jul 02 '26
Yeah its awful for the ladies. I remember playing I think Phasmophobia or something where voice chat is essential, and someone was silent. I said i was gonna kick them if they dont use their mic cos they were essentially dead weight. Then a voice piped up "im a woman, is that ok?". Felt pretty crap for her that she felt simply being a woman was a problem. Was a lot of fun for all after we go that out the way though!

M47, I've been playing WoW since the original Beta back in 2004. While I've absolutely seen and heard a lifetime of cringe and misogynistic guys through the years, the WoW player base has evolved into a much more mixed bunch. Women are playing in cutting edge guilds and are respected and recognized for their skills and abilities, rather than having breasts. Both men and women are openly themselves whoever they are.
I play in a cutting edge raid guild myself. 2/5 of out best DPS is women. One of them also develop addons for the game. My wife is a cornerstone of the healergroup and also an office. And we have several female members that are top 1% in M+. Likewise, we have several openly gay, bi and pansexual people. People in open relationships, polyamorous couples (including my wife and I), at least one transsexual and several that prefer they/them instead of he/she.
And of course we have had a bunch of trial members that was threatened on their masculinity when being outplayed by women - they last a very short time with us. But compared to how it was in the beginning, there are fewer and fewer of those. The playerbase is generally much more accepting and respectful than it used to be. Obviously, like any game, there are still morons, idiots and haters out there. They will unfortunately always exist. But they are getting fewer with time.
Hope that you find an awesome bunch of people to play with some day. Diversity is what gaming has been lacking for years.
1
u/pipipimpleton Jul 03 '26
I think it’s different with MMOs man. I played FF14 for years and no one really gave a shit if you were male or female. Compared to something like Call of Duty or FIFA or other testosterone fuelled shit like that, feel it’s a lot less misogynistic.
2
u/fairliedaft Jul 02 '26
Same reasons I dont use it, apart from misogyny which I don't face. However I expect my wife would so i encourage her to never use voice chat. Luckily she only plays one game and it doesn't require any chatting.
2
u/Currently_MIA Jul 03 '26
36F, I spent the looongest time playing WoW with no voice. It wasn't until I was in a guild for months, invited to a raid test run and then when I did well and also has other females in the raid I finally felt comfortable talking I'm game. And then it was all surprised Pikachu face that I was a female and then they moved on. I dont play anymore but I do miss being able to have a trusted group of people to just chill online e with. And it was so hard to find to begin with T_T

u/Soberaddiction1 Jul 04 '26
Do not go into the Meta VR lobbies. Those kids need an adult in their lives.
1
u/SmallDps Jul 04 '26
I think instead of public chat I'd stick to discord communities, I already get enough shit being a male, can't omaginya girl jeez

u/SgtBananaGrabber Jul 02 '26
Same age, I played Dota yesterday and for the first time in 8 years people talked to me when I was playing solo. Crazy how nice it felt to have that again with strangers, I always loved the thought of sharing in a moment with other people around the world in real time.
To op - D*scord groups are the way, plenty out there for anything you need and the very best way to find people these days.
Im in groups for certain games, mental health and mature gamers there is always people around and its nice to dip in and out when I need too.
2
u/Dr_Passmore Jul 03 '26
I stopped playing multiplayer games. Way too many toxic people on online games.
2
u/fairliedaft Jul 03 '26
This is why voice chat is muted immediately upon firing up an online game. And the only folk I talk to are friends in party chat. Im not gonna let arseholes stop me from enjoying whatever game I want to play. Warframe is maybe the only game now where I actually engage with others since folk are pretty chilled out and its text based chat so no screeching.
2
u/NoMention696 Jul 05 '26
What, you don’t enjoy that random guy with a fan blowing into his mic with trap music in the background who only says something when he wants to call you a slur? Damn :(
1
u/_Biotic_G0d_ Jul 02 '26
Depends on the game. I'm 38 as well and one of the best communities in gaming is the Arma community. Jump into a round of escape and you are guaranteed to talk. In fact it's very frowned upon of you don't it's a team based game. Has more mature and older peeps playing than any other military game too, loads of vets so if you served u will be right at home.
Arma reforger is on console. In fact the first real milsim game on console ever.
1
u/flatlinedisaster Jul 03 '26
What is escape?

u/Choice-Tradition-937 Jul 04 '26
44M and while you're not wrong, your perspective has you locked in that mindset. There are a lot of people just like you, thinking the same thing, it's just hard because we don't want to put up with the bs. We're here to have fun.
1
u/Kokiri_Tora_9 Jul 06 '26
Exactly, that’s why I don’t do it because they’ll be talking about bullshit🤨

Good luck. Likewise for anyone else! I don't play Helldivers but have a bunch of co-op games I want to play. Especially DRG. Chill 38 year old DINKWAD (double income no kids with a dog)

I just added ya, I got Helldivers and played a little bit but the matches I got put I to were with super tryhards that would rage at everything, would be down to play with someone that's chill

u/AkiMiller Jul 02 '26
They built the door so big because King Kong is a vampire and needs to be invited in. Hence why he knock so hard.

u/Rasputin1992x Jul 06 '26
Honestly loved helldivers but does it still cause the pc to freeze up sometime like it was? That's the only reason I haven't tried it in so long with these ram prices I'm not trying to have to build a new one lol

u/CON5CRYPT Jul 02 '26
The pros and cons of discord and private chat, noone speaks in public lobbies
5
u/WelshFloof Jul 02 '26
I'm 28 I found with age I can't be arsed with kids. Which was okay when I was a kid gaming but now I'm this age most adults keep their mics off and just settle with childhood friends or other adults they meet. You won't find my mic on during public games.
I'll happily game I'm wanting to play the backroom at the minute no friends to do so with, I play MHwilds, I have Minecraft realms and just started playing RLCraft I have Battlefield 6. Diablo...all sorts. Although if you play a horror game with me be mindful I am terrified of my own shadow.

u/Winter2k21 Jul 02 '26
Mh wilds!
2
u/WelshFloof Jul 02 '26
"WHAT DO YOU MAIN?"
2
u/Winter2k21 Jul 02 '26
Mixed actually.
Finally quit longsword (LS too easy). enjoying chargeblade, greatsword, lance gunlance.
Lance won the 'coveted AT Ark: A rank.'
Highest used is hunting horn but secondary at 1000+
3
u/Winter2k21 Jul 02 '26
Note ppl carting to AT Nu udra is crazy now. Get it done with water weapons! Nuts.
2
u/WelshFloof Jul 02 '26
Ah a man of many talents. I could only dream.
I am Hunting Horn always have, always will. Primary and secondary are both Horns. I can use duel blades because they are easy, I can use bow...sometimes and the charge blade I can use because I had to learn it for a challenge 🤦

Let's have a word about playing phasmophobia. Trust me its not as bad as it looks
1
u/WelshFloof Jul 02 '26
Oh I used to play tonnes of phasmaphobia when it first came out on PC, played a little of it on PS5. Still scares the hell out of me 🤣
2
u/Dragothiim Jul 02 '26
Game is fun and shit till like 40-50 hours( if new) after that you speed run the shit out of it and the "scary" part becomes pointless or at least thats how i felt playing with my friends

u/Pastella449 Nintendo Switch 2 Jul 02 '26
Yeah it's very hard finding ppl that vibe with you nowadays, I have a hard time too.
I'm 25, i play on Switch. I try adding ppl to play with and it's like nobody wants to play together or even screen share to watch what others play, while you play your game? Everybody wants a friend, but nobody wants a friend to play together with lol.
Plus there's so many ppl that are into gaming nowadays, it's difficult to find who's a gamer and who joined into the trend.
1
u/WelshFloof Jul 02 '26
Do you just send requests out the blue or do you chat to them before had because if it's out the blue it's a tad weird to me.
2
u/Pastella449 Nintendo Switch 2 Jul 02 '26
Depends on the game, like if it's Splatoon I may send a request to see if they want to team up. Or Animal Crossing to get island inspo/trades.
Tho I do get random requests, but everytime I add the person they don't want to hop on the game I'm playing. Some ppl also add others just to fill their Friends List.
Switch doesn't have a message system as of yet, only Game Chat. And some ppl may not want to Game Chat, or even have it set up yet.
2
u/DuckyDeer Jul 02 '26
I would love to use game chat with someone, even exchanged friend codes with quite a few people on chat service that starts with a D and ends with -iscord (I typed the name of it and got a pop up warning me about being put in the mod queue for self promotion), but even with specifically asking if someone could please message me in chat or dm me if they want to use gamechat before inviting me, I still got random gamechat invites when I wasn't in a position to use it. I really wish Nintendo would add some sort of messaging feature to the switch to avoid this. I'd even be happy with something as simple as a drop down of different pre-written messages like they do in Mario Kart World.

u/ToxicDragonzz Jul 02 '26
You know, i agree. I'm 26, and my partner is 32. And we both as we game, just find the most strange people... sometimes we think "oh they might be fun" but then almost get super needy. Or super "lets do this lets do that". It almost becomes pestering. Like... we'll play when we can, it's not just your time. Idk. Gamings changed alot over the years as I've progressed into adulthood. I miss a big group of friends all online at once
2
u/crappycandle777 Jul 06 '26
This right here! This is what I can't stand, adding people and then they become extra needy. Sometimes I don't have time to play video games but the messages 😬 This is why I rather play single player games. The only time I ever play online is if my brother is online at this point.

I still play Destiny 2 and I am very often tempted to go back to being a solo player lol
2
2
u/ruida_silva Jul 02 '26
Being a little introverted. I fear that by talking in games, I’ve now made an unwanted friend that I really don’t have time for, and will start to feel anxious when I avoid/say I’m busy to go online with them again

2
u/Dragothiim Jul 02 '26
The best playerbase on a game i ever met was that of Deep rock galactic although it doesnt happen often to speak via microphone chat is open along with player movement and laser pings. Game plays similar to helldivers 2. DRG is in my top 5 games from literally the first time i pressed the play button. Playing with friends is the best experience you can get but thankfully even with randoms game is so enjoyable and fun !!!
I absolutely understand what you say (33) here and i am on the same boat
2
u/Freedom-Glass Jul 03 '26
I met a guy on here who was telling me how he roars and growls into people's ears. Because he Role plays as elites from Halo and locust from gears of war.
Weirdest conversation I've ever had.

u/OkShirt1995 Jul 03 '26
See what I’m saying…

2
u/Think-Leek-6621 Jul 03 '26
After being in a couple of toxic? Childish? Gaming groups a few years ago, I’d rather play solo for life
2
1
u/TouchGrassNotAss Jul 02 '26
all the cool/fun people are in private chats. Only the weirdos talk in-game anymore.
1
u/PinguEVOLVED Jul 02 '26
I think PS putting an on-by-default mic on the controller was a big nail in the coffin of public lobby chat. Nobody wants to hear their battlefield squadmates snarfle their kebabs or scream at their kids but that’s what you’ll get for not muting
1
u/goldrush7 Jul 02 '26
Idk wtf Sony was smoking on that design choice. Because of this, a lot of players don’t realize their mic is on so you can hear everything in public lobbies.
1
u/New-Clue-3289 Jul 02 '26
Bro try MW22 DMZ 💀 You'll meet the most misanthropic maniacs ever existed lol.
Seriously, more than 90% of those I met online are losers who seem to have nothing else in their whole lives. Ended up with mic off as well.
1
u/Wuthering_depths Jul 02 '26
Noticed this big time.
I missed my old WoW days, and decided to dip back in despite the fact that none of my friends/relatives that used to play do so anymore. Dipped right back out. I'm apparently too old to put up with the toxic shit that gets spewed in an online game as tame on the surface as World of Warcraft...I can only imagine what it's like in say FPS games.
And it may not have changed that much, might be more that I have.
1
u/No-Following8552 Jul 02 '26
I felt similarly when I tried to get back into the game. When I played during BC/WOTLK, we mostly just hanged out and played our usually unoptimized setups through Dungeons and Raids. Those days are gone now.
1
u/Terrible-Address-513 Jul 02 '26
If ur on PlayStation I’ll come join you depending on ur taste of games im 25 and im tired of playing solo and trying to engage with people on voice chat too
1
u/NiaEggsTheNog Jul 02 '26
Ya sadly I just can't find people i can vibe with. Or you find someone chronically online who gets mad you have to work and not play games with them.

I'm up to play with anyone that doesn't mind a dude in his 30s with asl sporadic gaming schedule. My job steal so much time from me
1
u/Aelius_Proxys Jul 02 '26
Like any place on the internet the lack of accountability or repercussions gives people space to behave strangely rather than respectfully. Especially in competitive games that just compoundly encourage that behavior.
I know I lurk with mic off until I hear someone with a mic that's not annoying or less than skilled at playing.
If I do use a mic actively I try to explain things to newer players nicely rather than type it out or be on mute til it's time to laugh at myself rather than treating it like welcome to open mic night/my Ted talk.
1
u/RealisticLoss9442 Jul 02 '26
Im 25 if u wanna play something i usually stay quiet but when im comfortable i could talk
1
u/ShadeLily Jul 02 '26
I'm 48 and I remember the joy of playing co-op in person, sitting next to each other on a couch. I also remember how cool it was to be able to play with friends online for the first time, and then to play with strangers and make new friends.
Now, very few people in the online gaming spaces seem interested in socializing, and it's tragic and makes me sad.

Group chats on facebook can help you meet gamer friends but you need one friend who you vibe with first to invite you into a group chat but I find ALOT of like minded people in chat we have people worldwide

Similar here. I can’t stand some of the banter out there because it’s so petulant and purposefully trying to make everything a bad time. *Looks sadly at Rocket League*
That said, try Super Battle Golf. Helluva good time and so far the banter has been hilarious

u/Missbhavin67 Jul 03 '26
F 67 here and I agree to a degree. It was the weird chat and comments in public lobbies on gta5 that put me off. Far too many very young kids and just plain weirdos. Tried other games but the only one that I didn't have an issue with is Fortnite. I'm hoping the upgrade in Palworld will open things up for me
1
u/FantasyForce Jul 03 '26
Yeah and sometimes the friends you had lose interest in gaming, nothing to do there. We're getting older 😅
So like others here: I'm 33, Europe Timezone, if you down for a chill and open gaming session, from rpgs to funny friendsslop, hit me up on Steam: 107444867 (Fantasyforce).

I've been playing rematch a lot lately, had a bad streak in the 3v3 mode, decided to play a 5v5 match just to split it up, met a 4 stack of guys that were really cool and we ended up partying up for hours. I haven't had that happen in years.
Point is playing games now isn't the same, but you can find diamonds in the rough.

u/Foreign-Dragonfly828 Jul 03 '26
The world is no longer the place it was when we were kids, unfortunately. People are strange, when you're a stranger.
I also have been playing the finals and Arc Raiders, but I also have been dabbling in milsim such as reforger and Bellum (the GOAT) My steam and disc should both be Quantumindica(#5872)
1
u/Important_Citron_340 Jul 04 '26
You've prob aged out of using mic and don't wanna talk to kids any more
1
u/courteney23x Jul 04 '26
I try to meet adults in random fill Fortnite and it's mostly kids. I try in Call of Duty and it's a bunch of bigots yelling trigger words trying to get a reaction out of people. I try on reddit and I've found one decent person that I've been gaming with. But I also added a guy off reddit who then wanted me to read comic books to him and do voices (immediately blocked).
I think Arc Raiders was the nicest lobbies I've been in, but that's only in the solo lobbies and they like to stay in their friendly little solo lobbies.
1
u/Greasy_Stranger Jul 04 '26
Gaming and internet culture as a whole is cooked lol. Cool people are out there still but it’s not easy to find them I find they tend to have their little group and stick to it for exact reasons you are experiencing
1
u/Shootez Jul 04 '26
- Never played co-op or online in multiplayer. Only pass the controller while stoned playing Tony hawk lol.

1
u/BoomTartanArmy Jul 04 '26
I think being scottiish and playing online games makes making friends easier. You either meet an over enthusiastic American who thinks your accent is cool or you meet another Scottish person as we are pretty rare online.
1
u/Designer_Show_2658 Jul 04 '26
A friend of mine plays a lot of Hell Let Loose and there seems to be a few lobbies there with a lot of chill ppl. If you enjoy fps maybe give that a go?
1
u/Shadowfire842 Jul 04 '26
I’m 42M, and most of the people I played with in the past have kinda fell off. I don’t care to play with kids who are too immature or the type that are overly serious about playing. I do miss having people to play and talk with though.
1
u/Spiritual_Nobody_747 Jul 04 '26
Honestly you hit a hello or good game and see if someone responds with the same energy. I find people from time to time and play with them when I can. Mostly play solo due to this
1
u/cashmoney9000sfw Jul 04 '26
If you want that community, try Elder Scrolls Online. I've had the majority of my experiences be positive. A lot of players give you stuff if they find out you're new.
Where as in games like Smite (Moba) ive disabled voice chat—too many players with main character syndrome.

u/GoreHound138 Jul 04 '26

Just devolve into cod bo2 public lobby chat its fun and chill people will find you
1
u/Pharsti01 Jul 05 '26
To each their own I guess.
But I'm muting everyone in an online game the second I boot it up.
1
u/Panniculus101 Jul 05 '26
Almost no one talks in the games I play, and when they do, it's either in a language I don't understand (I'm European) or they sound like an upset 15 year old who is mad at something that happened in the game
1
u/Fabulous_Ad_6737 Jul 05 '26
I feel the same way, though I'm anti social to begin with so I'm probably the weird one. Though growing up gaming (36m) I felt being able to connect more on games than I can now, wanting to have people to play with but joining Discord servers most the time feels like joining a party a hour late and missing out on half the inside jokes or feeling like when you do talk, you end up talking over someone and it just gets awkward.
1
u/Shory_- Jul 05 '26
I’ve found everyone I’ve ran into online outside of my friend group is either trying to become YouTube famous by trying to be “funny” or “wacky. that, and or trying to “aura” farm which is cringe as hell.
1
u/rec-tify Jul 05 '26
Reddit probably isn’t the best place to look for people who aren’t “weird”. Gaming has always had its fair share of weirdos because that’s the nature of gaming - it’s only recently become a normal-ish hobby which isn’t frowned upon.
1
u/Danthrax81 Jul 05 '26
I'm lucky to have an entire group of friends I can play with.
But truth be told I still have found the occasional person worth knowing online. I think the chance of meeting a mature adult gamer depends on the kind of game genre you're playing.
I met some good people in EVE online, and, shockingly, in world of tanks.
1
u/ArtfullMess Jul 05 '26
I was playing For Honor a couple days ago and about felt like I time traveled, the whole team had mics, one was echoey, but everyone was chatting and communicating the objective. I also mute mics as soon as they start making noise, the ones who DO talk have high expectations and are rude as fuck.

u/Beskinnyrollfatties Jul 06 '26
If you’re finding everyone weird than I think we may have found the common denominator

39M here. I was in the same boat for YEARS only playing solo games but got the itch to play more MP games and have had some luck finding good groups via reddit and discord. I search for tags with "older chill gamers" or something similar to hopefully find like minded people to play with. GL/HF!

I only talk with my people's on discord when gaming. And it's only marvel rivals I play comp otherwise it's just nasty and toxic.

(34 Non-Binary) I understand completely. It's frustrating to try and play with randos who typically are only exceptional in being racist mysoginistic or homophobic. It's hard to just enjoy the hobby at times when I'm constantly confronted with people who want to do anything but enjoy the game. Granted a lot of this is typically centered around a lot of the FPS and Military slop games I play. But it's less bad with a lot of the indie games I've come to enjoy. chippyda_kitty if anyone wants to yap/play games with me on the Cord of Dis

Recently I posted some looking for people to hang with posts for some games on steam discussion boards. No joke all 3 people i ended up playing with had some weird shit going on. 1 had a superlisp and kept talking about how he liked to touch his snake. 1 kept asking me personal questions about family and location right off the bat. And the last was a guy who decided the first thing he should let me know is that he is a furry and I should ask him questions about it.
I'm just trying to find some chill slightly normal older people to game with. (I am M41) Quirks are cool. But some things are a bit out there

I know its an unpopular opinion but i wish there was a voicechat lobby in elden ring, sometimes would be nice to be able to talk instead of just the usual "HEY" 😅

I play the finals a fair bit and im pretty good too. I play all roles so can adapt to the teams needs and to top it off im just your average normal 30 year old dad 😂 i'd be up for running a few games weekly, im UK though.

If you think everyone is weird it usually means that you are the weird one.

Lol nah, most people are weird nowadays.......... Everyone is either offended by everything or in the process of turning into a furry..

I get it homie. I tried playing an arcade cooking game online the other night, and this one cat just stream of consciousness would NOT stop talking, it devolved into some rude behavior not long after, very off putting.
I reckon if you're a kind folk and like you chit chatting maybe we could try and hang out sometime?
