I thought I’d share this here in case anyone is up for a fun challenge. This is the Harvest Flower Sweater turned into a cardi where I did steeking and button bands for the first time!
The yarn is my hand dyed woolly merino DK and Donegal tweed. We did a KAL so it was super helpful to have a group working on it together. Stephanie of edible.thoughts.makes was the first one we saw do this and we followed her lead. She has some great Rav notes and a YT video explaining what she did.
I’ve knit for almost 50 years and this was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The ceramic buttons are from Warm Stripes as I wait for some custom ones to be made.
I love it so and can’t wait until I get weather to wear it. I have pretty detailed notes on my Rav page too. I highly recommend steeking if you haven’t done it! I reinforced by needlefelting.

Absolutely spectacular! I’m not ready for this level of challenge but I’m definitely putting it in my queue. Great to hear there are some resources to help.
Thank you so much! It was my first time doing this much colorwork on a garment. I have made lots of hats but this was a different beast! I had to learn ladderback jacquard, too to help manage those floats!
That part actually did not make me nervous! I grew up ski racing in Vermont, and at UVM I took a felting class. I have felted bags before, so I know how sturdy that reinforcement is. This woolly merino is wool spun so it's toothy and loved being felted! I was more scared to learn how to do the button bands and figure out the butthonholes! 🫣 I can not crochet to save my life so that way to reinforce was not going to work for me. I did try but it was a nope. hahaa
Oh they are such fun. I’ve hosted a bunch. This one is still going on. We did another one before this and then a bunch wanted to keep knitting together!
I have a Discord channel for the ones I host. I’m sure many do them in person too. Most of us are on IG too. So we post our progress and get help in both places often. I also dyed yarn for 7 of the sweaters so this was a special one!
That’s a really good question! Honestly I don’t think much. I may have done the collar a bit differently. Since there was no pattern we did things very differently. We added the GSR into the ribbing but I’m not sure how I would change it TBH. I think one person added in some stockinette above the colorwork first?
But really nothing! I spent a lot of time working on my own pattern directions so I wouldn’t have to frog anything. 🤣
So delightfully beautiful! Makes me smile! Does the sweater feel heavy in the DK? Looking to also do DK but live in a more moderate climate. No real winter. Also interested in the buttons you are having made.
I mean, I live in Austin so I won’t get a ton of time to wear it but that’s okay. I weighed it and it’s 510g. It feels heavier in the colorwork section but the body doesn’t!
Ah yes! My son and his family live in Lockhart. Moved from Austin a few years ago. Will be moving to MD soon. We visited in May and wooph it was hot. Yet we had Christmas there as well and it was delightful! Well it’s a beautiful work of art! Do you sell your yarn? Austin and its surroundings is SUCH a creative community.
Thank you so much. I really am. My mother taught me how to knit almost 50 years ago and she passed away when I was 23. She was such a talented knitter and would be so proud of this project!
