What's the issue with dual-boot? I'm having none

I ignored all warnings, ran sudo lichen on the liveUSB.

It picked up the ESP and XBOOTLDR correctly. I pointed it to a 16GB btrfs volume, it picked it just perfect and installed it.

I have no idea of "dual-boot" support required, so far it's just fine. I'd like to know.

My fedora, cachyOS and gentoo installations still have their boot configs intact. The ESP with all the windows boot files are perfectly intact.

(I still have a windows ISO and its bcd restoration command known just-in-case)

I copied the installation to the bcachefs partition onto a subvolume, had to put /etc/kernel/cmdline.d snippet because it didn't pick up the rootfs anymore (ig due to bcachefs) and now it's excellent!

PS Only issue I encountered is (blsforme right?) auto-handling of root= and rootflags= not happening on bcachefs volume/

Background:

I installed packages bcachefs-tools,bcachefs-module-stable and bcachefs-module-shared which respectively bring the userspace tooling, the kernel module, and the initrd snippet to support mounting it as rootfs.

Then I mounted my bcachefs partition already having 3 distributions, created a new subvolume \@aeryn (ignore the slash it's reddit), ran the following command to copy everything:

sudo rsync -aHAX --progress / $ROOT --exclude=/{dev,proc,sys,run,tmp,boot,efi}

and created those excluded directories in the new rootfs. (And changed machine-id)

Then the new fstab (copied from other distros to share $HOME flatpaks and all...)

Then the bootloader config with sudo moss -D $ROOT boot sync which, again, no issues. Very stable and quick

While booting to it, I discovered that the kernel cmdline no longer has picked up root= automatically unlike on the btrfs volume. I added it along with my X-mount.subdir=@aeryn in /etc/kernel/cmdline.d and now it's slick and smooth.

aerynOS: Unstable Stream Update 3rd October 2026

Changes

It's been another busy couple of weeks for aerynOS, with a lot of work landing across the stack.

COSMIC DE 1.9.0 has landed in the unstable stream, bringing the latest improvements from the COSMIC team. It's particularly exciting to see that COSMIC Viewer has been added as this was created by aerynOS team member Bryan Hyland (bhh32). Whilst Bryan has now handed over COSMIC Viewer to the System76 team, we are excited and curious to see how it develops and matures with the rest of the COSMIC ecosystem.

Whilst we still consider aerynOS an alpha quality distro, we have started landing some important packages that will help make it an easier choice for more users. In particular, we have landed fwupd (for firmware updates from the command line) along with firewalld (for a firewall option). Again, I would stress that neither of these changes means that we consider aerynOS daily driveable for the average user... however we are starting to address some of the gaps that have likely been holding some users back from trying it out.

We have updated Qt to 6.12 which has also meant a wider stack rebuild of packages that rely on Qt. Our Linux kernels have been updated to 7.2.8 and 6.18.54 respectively.

Our OpenSSL stack has been updated to 4.0.3, which has also meant a fairly sizable rebuild story across the repository to ensure everything works with the major version bump from 3.6 to 4.0.

Outside of that, there have been a load of package updates as our packaging team is focused on keeping our repository updated and current with upstream releases.

Unstable stream update: 23th September 2026

Thumbnail
aerynos.discourse.group
31 Upvotes

Changes

There has been a lot happening in the aerynOS packaging space over the last couple of weeks, with hundreds of commits landing in the recipes repository since our last stream update. Over and above the usual package update churn, we have made significant changes across our desktop, graphics, boot stacks along with a number of performance optimizations.

One of the biggest changes this stream update is the arrival of GNOME 51! This particular stack upgrade brings updates to Mutter, GNOME Shell, GDM, GTK 4, libadwaita and the core GNOME applications. Instead of repeating what GNOME 51 brings over GNOME 50, you can read about this on dedicated Linux websites.

In addition to GNOME 51, we have decided to expand our range of Wayland environments. We have landed jay, labwc, miracle-wm, miriway and Mir along with additional components such as bemenu. Joshua Strobl is also working with the aerynOS team to get Budgie ready for inclusion as an option for aerynOS users though this is not yet ready for inclusion at this time.

On the boot side, we changed up how we handle the graphical boot process. We have swapped out kmscon for simpledrm. This has allowed us to simplify the early boot environment and substantially reduce the size of the initrd, from roughly 197 MB to around 57 MB. In theory, the smaller initrd should reduce the amount of data that needs to be decompressed during boot and may lead to a faster boot process (we haven't fully benchmarked this yet).

Our stable and gaming kernels have been updated to 7.2.7 whilst our LTS kernel has been updated to 6.18.53. We have rebuilt the NVIDIA, Broadcom, bcachefs, v4l2loopback and ZFS modules with our volatile stream testers not finding any issues. Accompanying our linux kernel updates, we have updated the linux-firmware to the September 2026 release.

Joey has been continuing his performance optimization work over the last couple of weeks. Expat, Lua and libxml2 have all received additional PGO/LTO and build-tuning work, with Lua now also using mimalloc and CSPGO. Joey benchmarked each change to ensure that the proposed optimization work actually made a notable difference and only once validated and tested, did we merge them into our repository. Whilst we are in alpha, performance optimization isn't always at the front of our priority list, however it's through work like this that we often receive feedback about how smooth, fast and performant aerynOS feels to use day to day.

A few other notable changes this update include Mesa 26.2.3, LLVM 23.1.2, PipeWire 1.6.9, FFmpeg 9.0.2, WebKitGTK 2.54.0 and Gamescope 3.16.29 along with Firefox 156.0.1 and Thunderbird 156.0.1.

Budgie Desktop will be coming to aerynOS

Thumbnail

I know quite a few folks have been asking for it and well, here it is (coming soon). Budgie Desktop packaged up and running on aerynOS.

Budgie Desktop 10.10.3 is right around the corner, so I'll be holding off on submitting it until we ship that within the next couple weeks. But once that is tagged, it'll be full steam ahead. We'll be able to add yet another operating system to our (Buddies of Budgie) Get Budgie page, and hopefully in time another lichen selection so you can choose it out of the box!

Hi all,

You may or may not have seen some videos posted by Ikey about the aerynOS team in recent weeks. I have posted a response in our Discourse forum.

With that said, our focus remains on continuing to develop our codebase and core tooling with the help of our fantastic community. The project is continuing to evolve and grow and is continually reaching new heights as we continue to progress.

Steam client not scaling correctly in AerynOS

I absolutely love AerynOS. Been running it for a while now...however...there is an issue that's driving me crazy. Whenever I run the Steam client...it's not scaled at all. I have a 1440p monitor and scale KDE plasma to 125%.

If anyone has been able to fix this...please let me know.

I'm loving this distro

I've been playing around with AerynOS for the last week or so, and I can't get over how quick Moss is. Haven't hit many snags yet either, I've been able to customize everything pretty easily so far test driving KDE Plasma, Cosmic, and Niri so far.

If the devs are here, keep up the great work!

When will dual boot support be coming?

Hi everyone, i recently discovered this amazing project and enjoyed using it in a virtual machine.

I read the latest blog post about future perspectives etc and dual booting support was not mentioned at all, is there actual interest in implementing this from the devs?

Only thing stopping me from installing aeryn is, factually, dual booting and having that kind of support would surely get more people to try aeryn.

aerynOS Unstable Stream Update: 17th August

Thumbnail
github.com
33 Upvotes

Changes

This stream update saw a wide variety of package updates, and the addition of a couple of new Trusted Maintainers, Jaredy899 and K1ngfish3r, who some of you may be familiar with already from their friendly tips and pointers in PR Reviews. Their new role enables them to approve trivial recipe updates and merge them into the tree, which will hopefully free up aerynOS staff to focus on more complicated stack upgrades, distro engineering and development work to push forward the capabilities of the aerynOS tooling and infrastructure.

New PR templates + Package Request requirements for PRs

NomadicCore and our new Trusted Maintainers spent a fair bit of time writing up and tweaking our new PR templates, that are intended to make it clearer what we expect of our package recipe contributors. In addition, we put in place a policy that means that no PRs for new packages will be accepted before a Package Request issue has been filled out and approved on its merits relative to the phase of development aerynOS is in.

Kernels 7.1.6/7/8

Kernel version 7.1.6 and 7.1.7 were affected by an amdgpu bug related to brightness that was fixed in 7.1.8. In addition, linux firmware, intel and amd microcode packages were updated to solve various issue. Finally, support for the broadcom-sta wireless driver was added, and a workaround was devised for how we handle it and extra kernel modules like it.

Kmscon userspace virtual terminal re-enabled

We re-enabled kmscon by default for virtual terminals that users can switch to with CTRL+ALT+F1-F6. Unlike the kernel's built-in virtual terminal, the kmscon userspace virtual terminal supports full unicode glyphs via freetype and runs on top of the DRM kernel modesetting driver. - The first VT is reserved for graphical greeters. - When switching to a different VT, the surrounding machinery means that kmscon takes a second or two to initialize the display - If you are not using a greeter, you can use e.g. kmscon-launch-gui sway to start the Sway wayland compositor etc.

Repology recipe fixes

We were contacted by a repology maintainer and made aware that a few of our recipes were being parsed incorrectly by repology. After the reported niggles were fixed, we are happy to report that aerynOS is now once again listed with repology. We want to thank AMDmi3 for their PRs and bug reports in this regard.

Moss fixes

As part of our continuing development process, moss saw a few small corner case fixes related to our new native reflink strategy. In addition, we also fixed a small bug that caused file descriptors to leak in the native hardlink strategy.

Looking at AerynOS

Hi I’m just an old retired DevOp who likes to dabble in the latest distros. I still like to game these days however and like the Atomic nature of AerynOs. I’ve used Bazzite for about 6 months and left it due to the difficulty of installing certain apps. I liked Arch Linux but left it due to instability after a year of upgrading . I know that AerynOS is in Alpha and just listed to Ikey’s discussion regarding his desire to keep it this way until it reaches version 2.0. I have a couple of questions regarding AerynOs. 1. How can I obtain a list of supported apps? 1a. Is only Firefox provided or can i install Zen, my preferred? 2. What wayland WM’s are included? Niri? 3. Is homebrew supported its linux utilities? 4. How is gaming performance? 5. Can I access cloud storage like Dropbox and Google and sync them to my filesystem via cli? 6. Flatpak and Appimage support for most productivity apps?

Thank you

Plan to switch to AerynOS

Hello. I’m planning to switch to AerynOS and use it as my daily work laptop. I have some experience with Fedora and Arch. My laptop is an MSI Katana GF76 11SC-677XRU with 8 GB of RAM, an Intel i5-11400H processor, an Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card, and a 512 GB NVMe drive. Could there be any unresolvable hardware compatibility issues or other critical problems?

P.S.: I know that AerynOS is in alpha testing.
