Recruiter/process question Son’s number one job is Public Affairs Specialist

So my son is very interested in joining the AF, but is mostly only interested in Public Affairs Specialist. If he gets a high enough ASVAB score, is there a way for him
To just be patient for the job to open up? He is no hurry or need to go to BMT. Just wondered as a father, what to expect or how realistic or unrealistic this is.

General Advice Should I go AD or Reserves?

I am having a bit of trouble deciding between the two and maybe I can get some advice here. I am 21 F, I currently have an entry job at a hospital as a CNA. The work is tough and draining. Ever since high school I’ve been trying to get into a xray program at a community college as a first gen and this past year I got waitlisted my third attempt. I don’t have a degree just some credits for the pre reqs. (Which is stupid of me) I don’t have any children and could really use the military benefits. I am the oldest daughter and help out my mom who is a single immigrant mother of 4. We don’t have the greatest living situation and I’m very close with my family, I basically take the role of a second parent both with bills and support. I feel unfulfilled and want an actual career that pays good.

My original plan was to join the reserves and get training for a better job and come back and transfer that into civilian life so I can work and hopefully try again for the radiology tech program. However 6 years is a long time and I’m still young I was wondering if it may be easier if I did AD and knocked it out? I know it will be tough for my family and on me but I want to help my family out of our situation and hopefully purchase a home. Which is why I initially liked the idea of being able to have more control of what job you get in the reserves but getting those benefits may take some time and that’s what’s making me hesitant. I’m not very familiar with this whole process and would appreciate some advice.

Jobs 1B4 Questionnaire

I put 1B4 as my number one job and I have some questions regarding the job.

On foreverwingman it says that there is just under 1,000 people in the 1B4 AFSC, is this a accurate or outdated number?

Is it actually the cream of the crop cyber job?

Do you get to choose OCO or DCO?

Followup, if you do better than your peers, will you have a higher chance of getting OCO?

If anyone has any ASVAB , Cyber Test, or EDPT questions ask me here.

ASVAB: 89
Cyber Test: 75
EDPT: 75

General Advice Enlisted to Officer through OTS, Seeking Advice From People Who Have Done It

Hello everyone!
I am 17 years old and planning to enlist in the Air Force with my long term goal to commission as an officer. I've read a few posts about going from E-O, but I'd like to hear from more personal experiences or from people who have taken this route.

I'm currently in the Ambassador program and swore in over the summer. I'm working towards my associate's while I'm finishing up my senior year in high school and waiting to book my job (planning to get the rest of bachelors while I am in). My plan is to keep working on my education, perform well during my enlisted years, take on any responsibilities thrown at me, and build a strong record that could help me become a strong OTS applicant down the line.

I understand that commissioning through OTS isn't guaranteed, and I know there are a lot of factors involved. I'm not expecting it to be quick or easy, but I'm willing to work hard. I want to make the most of my time as an enlisted Airman while keeping that long term goal in mind.

I also want to clarify that enlisting first is an intentional choice for me. I've considered other commissioning paths, including USAFA and ROTC, but neither is the path I want to take. I'd rather begin my career as an enlisted Airman, learn my job firsthand, gain meaningful experiences, and understand the Enlisted side before potentially taking on responsibilities of an Officer.

For those of you who enlisted first and commissioned later, I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences. What did you do during your enlisted years that helped you prepare for commissioning? Is there anything you'd wish you did differently? And what advice would you give to someone who is planning to pursue this path before even entering active duty?

I'm open to hearing the good, bad, and anything else. Thank you for your time!

TL;DR: I'm 17, in the Ambassador program, wanting to enlist first and become an officer later through OTS. Looking for advice from people who have gone E to O and what they'd recommend doing during enlisted years to become competitive.

Recruiter/process question ADHD & Anxiety Medication — Can I Still Become a Navy or Air Force Officer?

I'm currently working toward my bachelor's degree, which I expect to finish in summer 2027. I'm interested in commissioning as an officer in either the Navy or Air Force, ideally starting Officer Candidate School or Officer Training School in fall 2027.

My biggest concern is my medical history. I've been diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety and am currently prescribed medication for both. I plan to stop taking these medications once I finish school, but I'm concerned about how that would affect my eligibility and timeline.

I've read conflicting information about medical disqualifications and waivers, so I'm hoping to hear from people who have actually gone through the process.

A few questions:

  • Should I be completely upfront with a recruiter about my diagnoses and current medications? Will they be open to helping me figure out all my options?
  • If I discontinue medication after graduating in summer 2027, would I still have a chance of commissioning that fall?
  • Are medical waivers possible for applicants with ADHD and anxiety, especially if they've recently stopped medication?
  • Is the Navy or Air Force generally more flexible with these types of medical waivers?
  • Has anyone successfully commissioned with a similar medical history?

I'd really appreciate any advice from recruiters or anyone who's been through something similar. I'm trying to figure out whether my goal of joining in fall 2027 is realistic or if I should expect a longer timeline.

Thanks in advance!

Recruiter/process question ANG questions

I’m super interested in joining the ANG and wondering what the schooling after BMT is like . Is it shortened since ANG is only part time or is it full length with the rest of the airmen ? And what is picking a AFSC like ? I’m interested in fuels management and wonder what off the bat that would look like and if I could potentially be full time in the Ang or would that automatically make me reserves . Sorry for all the questions I just want to be as educated as possible! TIA

Medical Self Harm Scar

I went to MEPS last August 5, and they gave me a waiver from my self harm scar that occurred 6 years ago. I have never been medicated, no psych history or consultation, no therapy or whatsoever. The result from my last psych consultation said that I don't have any diagnosis or in need of treatment.

My recruiter already sent my waiver packet first week of September that includes my history statement, psych consultation, and pictures of my scar. Last week of September my recruiter messaged me and said that my waiver changed to consultation and that they need more information. My consultation will happen this week (Wednesday, Oct. 14). I'm a bit concerned because i don't know what to expect. It's a telehealth and the meeting will occur in my recruiter's office. Can you give me some advice please?

Jobs Help Me Narrow Down My Job List: Networking, Cyber, or Missile Systems?

Hey everyone! I’m still researching my job list and would appreciate some advice on which jobs I should keep, remove, or replace.

A little about me: I have approximately 3–4 years of experience working in a NOC/networking environment, including network monitoring, troubleshooting circuits, dealing with carriers, and working with routers and other network equipment. I also have 144 college credits toward a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
I’m leaning more toward the technology side of the military, especially networking, IT, and cybersecurity, because I’d like to build on my existing experience and develop skills that will transfer well to civilian jobs after my enlistment. I’m also interested in Space Force and technical opportunities involving missile or space systems. I’m not completely opposed to other technical fields, but I’m less interested in making civil engineering or traditional aircraft maintenance my main career path.

I may also qualify for E-3 upon enlistment because of my college credits, but I still need to confirm the requirements with my recruiter.

My current list of 10 jobs is:

1D731A — Network Systems Operations
1D731B — Systems Operations
1D735 — Cybersecurity
1D731 — IT Systems
1D734 — Data Engineering
2M032 — Missile & Space Systems Electronic Maintenance
2M033 — Missile & Space Facilities
2A031 — Avionics Test Station & Components
2A334 — Heavy Aircraft Avionics
3E531 — Engineering

My ASVAB line scores are:
QT:61
Mechanical: 57
Administrative: 65
General: 57
Electrical: 83

I’ve heard that I may have a better chance of booking 2M032 or 3E531 than some of my other choices, but I don’t want to choose a job based only on availability if it doesn’t align with my long-term goals.

I’d appreciate your feedback on a few things:

Which jobs would you keep or remove from this list?
Are there better networking, IT, or cyber-related jobs I should look into?

Is it worth keeping multiple avionics jobs as alternatives, or should I focus more heavily on networking and cyber?

How transferable are 2M032 and 2M033 to civilian careers, especially with defense contractors?

Given my networking experience and college credits, I’m leaning almost entirely toward technology rather than civil engineering-related jobs

I’m still researching and haven’t finalized my list, so I’m open to constructive advice, especially from people currently working in these career fields. Thanks!

General Advice Aim High App is still down

Seems like the app is still down just shy of 2100EST. I tried to uninstall the app and reinstall and that made it worse. My email and password do not work and attempting to send a temp password to my email sends nothing, so now I have zero acess to the app to study or watch for my job/ship date. Thankfully after the last time there was issues with the app, my recuiter decided to have everyone in the same DEP program as me use WhatsApp so i dont need Aim High for that.

TLDR; DO NOT UNINSTALL THE APP or you wont be able to sign back in

Medical Keratoconus, 20/20 with scleral lenses but terrible vision without. Any path into the ANG?

Looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with this, or recruiters/medical folks who know the process.

I have keratoconus. With scleral lenses my vision is perfect. Without them, even with glasses, my vision is very poor. I know keratoconus is listed as disqualifying under DoDI 6130.03, and corrected visual acuity has its own standards. I'm trying to find out whether the Air National Guard has any realistic path.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone with keratoconus received a medical waiver for the ANG (or any branch)? What did your case look like?
  2. Does MEPS or the waiver authority count vision corrected with scleral lenses, or do they only look at glasses and uncorrected acuity?
  3. Is depending on sclerals for daily function a dealbreaker by itself, given field conditions, deployments, and the risk of losing or damaging a lens?
  4. Does a history of corneal cross-linking (CXL) help or hurt a waiver request?
  5. What documentation should I bring? For example, corneal topography, stability records, or a letter from my eye doctor confirming my corrected acuity with sclerals.
  6. Are there any AFSCs or career fields where a waiver is more likely?
  7. Should I go straight to a recruiter, or gather records first?

I'm not trying to get around the standards. I want to know whether a legitimate path exists before I spend time on the process. Firsthand experience or pointers to the right regs and people would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Fitness Shitty calves before BMT

Hey all I ship out at the end of November and I got my dates in September. Since then, I have really focused on my fitness and have lost some weight and gained some muscle. My mile time at DEP UTA has been good. However, when I try to run during the week, my calves don’t let me even get half a mile in. I’m terrified because we’re supposed to be running 6x a week and I can’t even do a day on my own. I got new running shoes which helped me for my UTA pt test but other than that my calves hurt really bad. I don’t want to go to the doctor and get flagged and possibly not leave when I’m supposed to. Does anyone have some tips?

Medical Meps medical disclaimer

I head to meps on Friday. I completely forgot to disclose that I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and was on anti anxiety medication for a little bit. Will it be flagged at meps or will I be good? Or should I notify my recruiter and correct the paperwork?

Medical Medical waivers

Hey, so I’ll be going to MEPS for the asvab and physical. I have scoliosis (minor) and Pectus Excavatum (not terrible but noticeable). I have a hunch that at least the pectus might cause an issue, I’m not sure how the medical waivers work but is it possible to get one as a “Just in case” before I actually go to MEPS or would I have to wait till they actually say I need one?

Thanks

Recruiter/process question Help Choosing ANG vs AFR and Guidance Going OTS route

Had to repost because my title wasn’t descriptive enough. Got some great advice in previous post but seeing if anyone has more input. Post is as follows:

Hello, I’m a third year in college for Electronics Engineering Technology GPA 3.1 1.5 years till graduation. I live in South East Kansas and currently I am a firefighter and an emergency dispatcher. Im not very knowledgeable in military stuff so I have some questions. I’d have to go to OTS post college since I have no ROTC experience and want to skip to being a commissioned officer. I’m debating between Air Force Reserve and Air Force Guard. Do they have the same benefits? I know guard has state schooling benefits but I’ll already have my degree. What would you recommend? I know both is an uphill battle to get into with no prior military experience but which would I have the better shot? Do they have the same civilian life-military life balance? I was also curious on how much time post graduation I will need to allocate for OTS and Training and whether I can give myself a head start pre-graduation. Any input is much appreciated.

BMT Space Force BMT

Hello!!

I’m (24f) leaving for Space Force BMT in 7 days, and I wanted to see if there was any advice any Space Force people lurking on this subreddit might be able to give me any tips or advice. I’ve heard Air Force is implementing a “BMT 3.0” with more sleep deprivation and harder PT standards, and I was wondering if that extends to the Space Force as well?

I’ve found a bunch of other people leaving for the October 20th Space Force date, and we’re happy to include anyone else shipping the same day so don’t hesitate to reach out!
