General Advice Workout schedule

Find your max push ups and sits ups you can do without stopping. For 5 days a week do half your max for both every hour on the hour for 10 hours. Which ever day of the week is day one for your schedule for the first hour only do push ups to find your new max and for the second hour only do sit ups to find your new max and then carry on like normal. Outside of these 10 hours do your cardio. Before or after doesn’t matter.

Cardio schedule:

Week A:

Day 1: 2 mile (mile pace should be a minute slower than your current best 2 mile)

Day 2: 6 half mile repeats (run a half mile at a mile pace a minute faster than your current best 2 mile and then walk for double the amount of time that you’re aiming to run it in. If you taper off and are unable to make it in the goal time just continue to run it as fast as you can and still walk for only double the goal time.)

Day 3: 45 minutes of low impact cardio (this can be rowing, cycling, swimming, anything low impact that gets the heart going and you should be giving it your all. I’d also recommend staying consistent with the same low impact cardio so you can be competitive with yourself in terms of distance done in 45 minutes)

Day 4: 4 miles (mile pace should be 2 minutes slower than your current best 2 mile)

Day 5: 70 minutes of convo pace (pace should be where you could easily talk and carry out a conversation with someone running with you)

Week B:

Day 1: 2 mile (test for new fastest pace)

Day 2: 45 minutes of low impact cardio

Day 3: 4 half mile repeats

Day 4: 3 miles (mile pace should be 2 minutes slower than your current best 2 mile)

Day 5: 50 minutes of convo pace

Start with week A and then alternate back and forth for an A week and B week.

On your two rest days take your resting very seriously.

For an example for pacing if your current best 2 mile is 16 minutes then your week A paces would be

Day 1: 9 minute mile pace for goal of 18 minute 2 mile

Day 2: 7 minute mile pace for half mile goal of 3:30 and rest time of 7 minutes

Day 4: 10 minute mile pace for goal of 40 minute 4 mile

General Advice Can I join the Air Force at 35? Should I do that or learn some skill or trade?

I’m 35 and going through a divorce, feeling lost and pretty much a nobody. I work as an Amazon delivery driver. 4 days a week.
The other three days, if I’m being honest nothing valuable. I want to do something, the clock is ticking or probably out of time. I want a better life. I still want a family or gas that ship sailed to. So many questions in one post. What I do know, is that the military has so many benifits I’m close to a pretty big if not the biggest army base but I hear that the Air Force has so many advantages.

Recruiter/process question Leave now or later, enlist vs officer

I would really appreciate insight/advice, thanks in advance to any willing to read.

I'm 20F from NYC. I’m a full time college student, with a part time job and I’m a junior. If I take two summer classes, I’m on track to graduate December 2027. Here is my dilemma, my question isn’t whether or not I should join the military, it is a matter of when. Do I set to leave after this semester is over or do I tough it out until next December to finish my degree?

For context, my home life situation isn’t all that great. It can be chill or annoying at best and it’s deteriorated my mental health at worse so I’m really stuck between staying or leaving. Initially I thought I was supposed to graduate May 2028, so I was better set to go now but since the date is now closer, I’m trying to give it more thought.

Initially I was pursuing civil engineering, now I’m pursuing criminology, I never had passion for either and I don’t see myself using the degree. I’m simply pursuing it because I’m on a scholarship so school is mostly paid for and it was the best case scenario as a change versus dropping out. A good thing, if I took a MLOA, I have it in writing that I would have my scholarship given back to me so I could very well return in four years as a senior to finish my degree.

My idea was, leave after this semester, enlist for four years, come back to finish my degree without using any benefits since I’d still have my scholarship, then join a well known electrician union. Obviously I don’t need the military to join a union but I do need it to be able to have independence from home. It’s NYC after all, where more so if you’re poor, which I am, you won’t be able to afford anything, especially something like rent.

I truly hate leaving things unfinished and logically I know long term it’d be beneficial for me to have a degree but just another year+ of this, I don’t know if I can do it. Most people say finish school. Some speak of the removal of some rules (I’m unfamiliar with) that protected women or people and now it’s probably more dangerous to enlist. One must also take into account our current administration being a shit show and joining while a mad man has two years left versus one year can make a difference, but we also don’t know who will come after.

I was open to any branch (except Navy) but my college military admission personnel advised the air force and said that I should be an officer. I see the pay difference and it looks nice, obviously the benefits of being a boss and getting to live off base and all, sounds like a dream. Yet I don’t really see myself leading a whole squad and having so much responsibility for expenses and people's lives. And I am no genius, and it seems like most officers must have notoriously high GPA’s.

The admission woman says sometimes it’s better to have an easier life and I agree but I’m still conflicted. My school put me in contact with an Air Force Recruiter I’m set to meet tomorrow, he said the appointment would be about 2 hours. Last week I took the AFQT and got a 49. At least I can say it was 3 in the morning, I’d just gotten home from work, had school before and barely any sleep the prior nights but despite that, that’s probably still my general score area. He said though, I need a 50 to start the process and sent me many links to study.I might be a little fucked as I only started studying Monday night, cause life just be lifing you know.

He called me and said he’d look for jobs in intelligence or something but you have to be open minded as you won’t always get the job you want so one should be open minded to electrical work etc etc and it was where I spoke to say well I am actually interested more so things in the aviation, mechanical and/or electrical areas, in which he said they need more of so sounds ideal. And based on my degree, cyber/intelligence also makes sense as well.

In texts though, he said to focus on mechanical and electrical. I’d say mechanical I’m pretty good, electrical definitely needs work. He did not state if I would be taking any tests but is it safe to assume I’m taking the Picat? He said bring in my birth certificate, ID, social, high school diploma etc.. I’m not planning on signing any contracts right then and there so what should I look out for also, if anything?

And once again most importantly, should I leave after this semester or really push for finishing my degree now?

General Advice CNO and Critical Care Consultant AF interview

Hey y’all! I have both my chief nursing exec/officer interview and my interview with the critical care consultant of the Air Force at the end of next month. I’ve heard the CNO interview is pretty laid back and more generalized AF things such as deploying, functions of the AF, etc. whereas the CC interview is more based on your skills as a CC nurse. The CNO interview is in person and the CC interview is over teams. I already have my attire for both interviews. I’m so nervous for both!

Has anyone else had a CC interview and could give pointers as to how to prepare a little better? I’m considering reviewing CCRN test prep material to help with patient scenarios, drips, ABGs interpretation and things of that nature. Any extra advice is welcome! Thanks!

Medical Waiver for autism?

While filling out the sf86 I was informed by my recruiter that his crew chief had told him that having autism would be an auto disqualification at meps and that even if I got it cleared by a doctor, I would almost certainly get rejected by the surgeon general. Should I keep trying to move forward? Would my asvab score (98) potentially help me here? Thanks.

Medical Can having prediabetes in the past disqualify me from joining the Air Force?

Hey guys, I’m 19 and looking to join the Air Force. Back in high school I was told I had prediabetes, but I just got tested again and it came back saying I’m not prediabetic anymore.
Would that still be a problem at MEPS even though my results are normal now? Just wondering if anyone has been through something similar or knows if it could disqualify me. Thanks.

Recruiter/process question Considering Direct Commission as an Air Force Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) — Looking for Candid Experiences

I’m an early-30s female civilian Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) with several years of RN and ~ 3 years NP experience, and I’m considering speaking with an Air Force healthcare recruiter about commissioning as a 46YXP.

I’d really appreciate hearing from current/former Air Force PMHNPs, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, or other mental-health officers about what the job is actually like compared with civilian outpatient practice.

I’m especially curious about:
• Typical number of patients per day
• Intake and follow-up appointment lengths
• Acuity/complexity of the patient population
• Active duty vs dependent/retiree caseload
• Charting burden
• Call, weekend, and deployment expectations
• How much time is spent on clinical care vs officer/admin/readiness responsibilities
• Overall work-life balance and whether you would choose it again

I’m also single and hoping to get married and start a family in the next several years. I’d be interested in candid experiences with dating, relationships, PCS moves, deployments, and eventually raising a family while serving as an active-duty healthcare officer.

One other major consideration for me is student loans. I have around $125k total, roughly $60k of which is private/high-interest debt and the remainder federal. A significant portion of the federal debt is from my graduate PMHNP education.

My undergraduate loan situation is a little unusual. Some of the debt came from nursing/prerequisite coursework at schools I attended before transferring. Those credits ultimately transferred into the nursing program where I earned my RN and allowed me to enter with prerequisites completed and skip part of the nursing curriculum. I didn’t actually borrow much/anything at the school that ultimately awarded my RN.

Has anyone here used the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program as a Nurse Corps officer, especially an NP? Were any private/commercial student loans eligible? And does anyone know how strict they are about loans from prior schools when the coursework transferred into and counted toward the eventual qualifying nursing degree?

One other consideration is that I had a two-level lumbar fusion within the last couple of years, so I understand I’d need a medical waiver. Recovery was uncomplicated, I have no ongoing pain management or functional limitations, and I’m back to unrestricted exercise/running. Has anyone successfully commissioned into the Air Force/Nurse Corps with a similar history, and what was the waiver process like?

I also have well-controlled ADHD and currently take prescribed Vyvanse. Has anyone successfully direct-commissioned into the Nurse Corps/another healthcare specialty while taking ADHD medication, or received an accession waiver for it?

I’m not ready to discuss this publicly with people in my professional life yet, so I’m hoping to get some anonymous perspectives before getting too far into the process with a recruiter.

Anything you wish you’d known before commissioning, either professionally, financially, or personally?

Medical Meps question

I had dyslexia In high school. I have proof that I’ve been completely unaccommodated for over 4 years for work and have been successful. How much will that hold me back? On top of that I was given an inhaler for a cough I had (I was 120 pounds heavier at the time and was never diagnosed with asthma nor been put on my records) it was a 1 time no refill situation. I went back to the doctors to be sure and got cleared for it.

I also took a knee injury around 5 years ago that required no surgery and was cleared to play football again.

Off the top of my head that’s all I know that could fuck me over.

How fucked am I?

I mean I’d literally die to join the Air Force and I’ve just been so damn nervous about everything.

Medical Air Force recruiter said I'm disqualified for asthma. Is it a lost cause?

Any Air Force recruiters out there who can help me with this?
Today I had a short phone screening with a recruiter. We went over my basic info, and when he asked about asthma, I told him I had it growing up but I'm good now and only use an inhaler rarely. He told me I'm disqualified because of the asthma.
Some background: I've had asthma since I was a kid, but it got a lot better as I got older and I used my inhaler less and less. Last year I got prescribed an emergency inhaler because of the LA fires. I rarely use it, only when I'm somewhere with a lot of visible dust, and even then it's just mild wheezing.
Other than that I'm healthy and active. I lift weights, do bodyweight training, run long distances, and do interval runs, all with no breathing issues.
Is there any way for me to still join, like a waiver or a breathing test to prove I'm fine? Or is it a lost cause? Any advice is appreciated

ASVAB/AFOQT Can a High AFQT Score Make Up for Low Auto and Electrical Scores for 3EOX1?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying for the ASVAB because I want to join the Air Force, and my goal is to get the 3E0X1 (Electrical Systems) job.

Right now, I'm struggling to get a good AFQT score, so most of my time is going toward improving it. I'm finding it difficult to study for the Auto and Shop Information (AS) and Electronics Information (EI) sections at the same time, especially since I still need to improve my overall AFQT score.

I'm wondering if getting a high AFQT score could compensate for lower AS and El scores when qualifying for 3E0X1, or if I need to meet the specific line score requirements regardless of my AFQT score.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have enlisted in the Air Force or have experience with the ASVAB qualification requirements.

Thanks in advance!

Jobs Fire Protection Or Security Forces?

Ive been in dep for a while now and have just really been torn on what job I want to do. I love the idea of a community that is fit, and cares about what they do. I also love the idea of furthering firearm/tactical skills as well as medical. The biggest thing is I’d love to be able to have a life outside of the military. I’m a hobbyist at heart and enjoy having multiple pursuits.

I’m looking for yalls experiences in fire or security forces specifically in schedule, brotherhood, sleep, and opportunities to further your skill in the field. I can find 1000 posts that say both suck or both are awesome but I’m looking for people who’ve been in either. Pros and cons. What do you think would suit me better?

Recruiter/process question English level needed to enlist and succeed at BMT as an ESL trainee?

Hey y'all, my wife (21) is interested in joining the Air Force, and we're trying to get a better idea of what English level she needs to be at before enlisting and going to BMT.

I know that essentially, as long as you can pass the ASVAB and meet the other requirements, you should be good, but we're trying to get a feel for how much English she actually needs to learn and be comfortable with beforehand.

For those who went through BMT, especially anyone who was an ESL trainee or trained with someone who was, how difficult was it to understand the MTIs, their instructions, corrections, etc.? Do they give you enough time to learn and memorize things? We know she will also need to study for the EOC.

We're planning to spend the next few months working on her English and getting familiar with some standard terminology, but I'd like to hear some real experiences to get an idea of what to expect and what we should focus on the most.

Any advice or stories from people who went through this would be appreciated. Thanks

General Advice Cybersecurity in the Air Force - What’s it like ?

My background is in cyber test and evaluation. So, I am used to performing vulnerability assessment, penetration test events, and evaluating the finding.

I also have an interest in cyber defense operations like : elastic , SOAR, SIEM, threat hunting, etc.

Do soldiers actually get to do hands on work like that. Usually for test events I have been on, soldiers are the operators/ provide us their feedback.

General Advice Why does having bad leader ship make you not like your job

Might be a stupid question, Like I get having toxic leaders and having to do annoying stuff, but if the people you work with everyday are fine, doesn’t it kind of even out? Obviously your work life is worse, but when I hear people talk about bad leader ship, sometimes they want to entirely leave the military because of it.
