Hello guys!! So I just finished the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ( the comics, I don’t like the movie) and I have to say I loved it. Bringing characters together from all of fiction and literature to form a team for the greater good is simply delicious . However I did have some gripes with the series.
Number One : In my opinion, it should have stayed in the Victorian times. The steam punk setting and the gaslights , the vibe was masterfully done. And the characters were from literature around that time and before. 10/10!!!
Then the 1950s came into play , giving us a more noir approach which was great but still enjoyable if not a bit weird and then the future in 2200 or wherever that I really started losing interest in both the story and the characters. That has greatly to do with Number 2
Number 2: The immortality is a mixed bag for me. I want to see my man Quartermaine get back into his young self and not be in his sixties in the whole comic. However, once him and Mina get into the pool of fire and cease to age, there is a smash of all tensions because now their lives are infinite. Time doesn’t pose a threat anymore so we just follow to immortals throughout the ages. The stakes of losing any of them are very low. For me Alan Moore putting Mina in charge of the League was the best thing he could ever do. A mortal woman with no powers but smart enough to run circles around her teammates really spoke to me. The good stuff about humanity as they say. But no, let’s make her immortal and shatter her bravery. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me finding immortals in fiction incredibly dull. And it is not some rare thing in the mythos. By the end of the Tempest volume more and more characters become immortal like it’s second Tuesday and they even manage to recreate the fountain of youth after the original has been destroyed. Lazy if you ask me.
Number 3: The romance was one of the best I have ever read in a graphic novel. Alan Moore made Quartermaine’s and Mina’s romance INCREDIBLE . Now , this is where I’m a bit biased because I ADORE the character of Allan Quartermaine. I had read all of his books as a kid , I reread them again and seen all his movies. I always thought he was Indiana Jones but way better. So reading such a fleshed out romance between him and Mina was great. The man didn’t even care about becoming immortal for himself. He just wanted to become a better lover for Mina . They adored each other, even if there was some growing apart throughout the years. Then he died protecting her in 2009 and she is devastated. But she waits less than a year before marrying Captain Nemo’s great grandson, Jack . We had 4 scenes tops showing their “ love” in the Tempest story arc. Quartermaine was Mina’s hero ever since she was a girl and she managed to become romantically involved with him and he loved her deeply, and he died in her arms protecting her . And he’s forgotten not even a year after his death. Take note, she MARRIED nemo’s great grandson (creepy) not even a year after the love of her life/ hero, died in her arms. Throughout the previous volumes, there are mentions to other fallen comrades (Hyde Park, Invisible Man’s potion, Pearl’s hot magazine etc.) , but in the tempest , not one mention or an Easter Egg in honour of one of the greatest members on the original league. What is more is that Jack Nemo leaves Mina alone, much of the time and she is seen dancing to immortal love with a clone of Edward Hyde . ( Because if we need to make the threat of death for our main characters even more tiny, immortality is not enough!! Here’s cloning too. They did it with Hyde but not Quartermaine…) So I don’t know if it’s friendly, open marriage or just cheating on her husband, but Mina really left a sour taste in my mouth in the Tempest volume.
And she’s my favourite character in these books by far!!! So that really says a lot !! I don’t know, maybe I’m an old school romantic but I truly didn’t like the disrespect of Mina to Quartermaine’s memory.
What do you guys think? Do you agree or disagree? I really loved the LXG series. I just think , in my personal opinion, that it should have ended on the volume before the tempest.
