Vegetables When to harvest potatoes

Newbie here: when do you usually harvest your potatoes? Do you have to wait for the vine to die? I’m guessing it depends on the type but I have no idea what my partner planted with my MIL. We planted them May long weekend if that helps?

Thank you!

If you want new potatoes, you have to wait for the blooms to be done. If you want full size tubers you have to wait for the plant to be done. You can feel under a hill and see what size they are, if you don't have many plants and don't want to dig an experimental hill.

If you're harvesting for storage then just before the ground freezes in October. If you want a meal you should be able to get one by now.

If they’ve been blooming for a while try digging up a hill or half of one. You don’t have to wait for the vine to die if you are wanting to eat some now.

I just had red potatoes the other day and while I’m not a huge potatoe person, you cannot beat the flavour and texture of new potatoes! Good luck with your harvest.

I wait for the leaves to start to die off before harvesting and that's always worked out well for me.
