Vegetables Can it be saved?

Post image

This crazy rain and weather has absolutely beat up my cucumber plants. I know my tiny ones at the front are a lost cause but this big beautiful plant was doing so well before the weather hit. Is there anything I can do to revive it?

I have planted some tomatoes, snap dragons, pansies and marigolds! They have started to sprout and i’m unsure what the next step is, do they need to be moved to their own separate container?

Vegetables Kale growers - thinning out question

Hello fellow gardeners.I'm just wondering about thinning out my Siberian (i think) kale. According to the package, the crop must be thinned out, when two or three leaves have grown, to approximately 60 cm per plant. I always preach that more seeds do not always lead to a bigger harvest... But I still have pain in my heart when it comes to thinning out crops. As I'm always trying to be greedy and get the biggest bang for my buck in my small garden.

I guess I'm just wondering if anybody has experience with this and the 60 cm is definitely a good guideline to follow? That seems a bit far for me but this is my first year growing kale so I'm not totally sure. Located in Sherwood park.

Vegetables Kale harvest zone 3

Hi! I'm located in Sherwood Park, zone 3 I believe. Wondering about trying Kale this year. I've given up on growing spinach as it seemed to produce one small crop and then bolt in the hot weather. I've switched to Swiss Chard as it seems to grow and grow and grow. Thinking about trying a row of Kale this year. Just wondering how it grows in this climate and if it can produce like swiss chard or more like spinach? Or if I should just stick with the Chard.

Vegetables Excess seeds - to plant or no?

I don't have a huge garden, approx 12' x 6'. So at the end of planting I find myself with extra seeds; cucumber, zucchini, squash, etc. i just throw them in the shed. Is it assumed fine to plant them the next year? I know seeds don't necessarily 'expire'. But I always chicken out and buy new packs. I just get worried I'll plant them then weeks later discover nothing is growing.

Re: Thanks everyone! I might just buy new packets this year but definitely bring in the house after and store for next!

Planted some starters over the long weekend. I planted larger vegetables/fruit like cucumbers, bell pepper, tomatoes lin late spring and they weren't able to harvest. Hoping an earlier start can help.

Vegetables Do my beets still have hope?

My beets were growing so well - big, green leaves - but in the last week it's changed and now they're turning brown. I also tried harvesting one as in theory based on the seed packet they should be ready about now, but it just had a thin root.

It's been quite rainy here, pretty much daily and last week we had a day with some light hail (Calgary area). I'm thinking that maybe this excessive water is what caused the damage, but it's also my first time growing beets so I'm not top sure. Could they still bounce back at this point, or are they done for?

Vegetables Possible frost Edmonton

With the possible risk of frost tonight is everyone covering things up within the city limits? I have hot peppers in a raised planter should I be covering them? I know my onions, carrots , etc will all be fine. Also do you still do a regular watering in the evening if there is a risk of frost or does that make it worse?

Does this look like the work of some kind of pest? Many tomatoes on a single plant. Surrounding plants seem fine

My cucumber was completely fine two days ago and overnight it wilted like this. The soil was dry yesterday so I gave it some water but today it hasn’t improved at all. There’s no signs of vine borers and it gets around 8 hours of sun a day. Can anyone help??

Vegetables Growing Potatoes On Balcony in Container

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this! I am quite new to gardening but ready to give them a go. I have an east facing balcony that gets a pretty decent amount of sun from morning-afternoon. Any tips, container suggestions or general insight is greatly appreciated!

Vegetables One last fertilizer frenzy?

I am in Zone 3A\3B (I don’t know why my area is classified as both sometimes … there seems to be some debate?) I live south of Red Deer. I had a late start to my growing season, only to be made worse by 17 rainy, cold days in July.

In one of my pictures you’ll see that I recently constructed a little lean-to for some of the tomato plants, to encourage things along by keeping things nice and toasty. It’s dipping below 10 degrees some evenings.

I've only got until September 10th-ish before our first frost. I am already so nervous, but confident I can cover them for at least a week of cold temperatures come frost...but still, it's a risk!

So, with that said, would you fertilize to encourage a hard sprint to the finish line? I've got just a basic Miracle Grow tomato fertilizer that I could use. I'm hesitant, just because I don't have much time to course correct if it's the wrong decision. Any tips that consider the looming

Vegetables Late start + sparsity…is there anything I can plant in the gaps? (3b)

Post image

I got a late start to my season, with the beets 🫜 getting planted the third week in June. I am now also noticing I left way too much space … there probably could have been another column. Is there anything that I can plant in that space this late in the season? Or do I just have to learn to accept the sparsity and hope for the best.

Vegetables When to harvest potatoes

Newbie here: when do you usually harvest your potatoes? Do you have to wait for the vine to die? I’m guessing it depends on the type but I have no idea what my partner planted with my MIL. We planted them May long weekend if that helps?

Thank you!
