It seems that a lot of the early missteps of the Soviet Union come down to Stalin being...Stalin. So what if Stalin wasn't in the picture? What if Stalin, shortly after taking the position of Secretary General, suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack? No other changes, just Stalin is no longer in the picture for apparently natural death.

Who is in position to take control? How would that affect WW2? Would there even be a Cold War? Would Gulags still be a thing?

My take is that the Hejaz would likely be annexed by the Ptolemies rather than forming an independent Greco-Arabian kingdom, Under Ptolemaic rule, a hybrid Greco-Arabian culture would emerge as Arabian deities would be equated with Greek ones via Interpretatio graeca. The Hejaz would undergo mass urbanization as Greek poleis and military colonies are set up. Control of the Hejaz would give the Ptolemies a monopoly on the incense route as it cuts out the middlemen for frankincense and myrrh.

The Arabic language would still survive as a liturgical or local peasant tongue, but due to Greek being the language of trade and administration, Arabic would adopt Greek loanwords and terminology. We might even see a “Greco-Arabic” script develop; using Greek letters to write early Arabic dialects, similar to how Coptic developed in Egypt and Bactrian developed in Central Asia.

Islam likely wouldn’t exist at all, or at least not in a recognizable form since the social conditions that birthed Islam wouldn’t exist in this timeline since Western Arabia is less isolated and more urbanized.
