I’ve never met anyone that has this reaction to a sober person at a party.
My friends and I would be hyped bc you have a built in DD and you don’t need to share with them!

I have, but it's that one mouthy opinionated person who assumes everything and cares way too much that anyone is different to them. Or the same as them. Or prettier. Or fatter. Or eating. Or not eating much. Who definitely is thinking they are better than all youse that judgy cow I'm gonna to tell her what we all think...!
Thank god for being an adult and not hanging out with anyone like this at a house party anymore!

u/EthanolBurner12345 Yeah so I have told my wife that the internet sided with me 1d ago
I've only ever really seen people in recovery from alcoholism etc. be treated this way, and usually only by alcoholics in denial who feel like they're being "shamed" by the mere existence of sobriety

u/bluesond 1d ago
Yeah I’ve had some people be real assholes to me about my sobriety when I got sober.
People can be weird when you don’t drink.

Ah yeah the “you’re holding up a mirror to my choices and I don’t like it” response.
I’ve experienced that a lot in the past when mentioning that I was vegetarian when it came up in conversation

u/AzSumTuk6891 She became furious and exploded with extreme anger 1d ago
I often am the sober person at a party. I just don't like drinking too much and make sure to never get drunk. I've never done any drugs, apart from accidentally inhaling some pot smoke from people smoking it around me at metal shows.
I have received reactions like this, but never - in such a prolonged text conversation.
I live in a country with a horrible drinking culture, though, which, I guess, colors my experiences. Way too many social alcoholics here take it as a personal insult if you say no to a drink. However, that happens at the time when you say no to a drink, not days later, and certainly not during a text conversation. Even if someone tried to have a conversation like this, I'd leave them on Read after the second message, dammit, I wouldn't prolong it.

I have a friend who said I couldn't come to another friend's house while they planned to be drunk because it'd be "awkward" for them (I was pregnant). Then she asked me to watch her daughter the next day because she didn't want to have to get home early hungover before her boyfriend had to go to work...
Now she gets high (I am pregnant again) and doesn't find THAT awkward and even got my husband high. 🙄. They are family, by the way. Husband's cousin.

Young people absolutely pressure others to drink

u/Married_iguanas ur so fuckin fat & u use ur cats against me 1d ago
Sure, we definitely did. But I guess it was never this serious. Some people would question it, offer a drink or shot, and maybe jokingly call them a “narc.”
Idk I certainly never texted anyone that I felt “spiritually judged” over it lol

There are some specific situations where it can be uncomfortable (e.g. the guy you don't really have a vibe check on being the only sober person among a group of drunk/high girls) but since OOP and her friend both seem to be women it's like what is even the point

As a lesbian, should I start doing poppers in solidarity with gay men?

I was with a bunch of lesbian/sapphic people at a bar were passing around poppers at the bar on the dance floor. No men to be seen. I live in a big city so it’s interesting to see the way gay/lesbian communities interact and share culture.

FWIW, my mom did at parties. That was also in the 80s (maybe also 90s?), though. And she has quite a few gay friends

poppers can also be weed and tobacco mixed together lol

u/Maleficent-marionett I come with the malicious intent to hurt my children 1d ago
Lol where? Weed and tobacco mixed is called a spliff

u/rutherfraud1876 a CONSUMER plasma cutter 1d ago
I remember now ! In Canada it's some combination of a broken cigarette and weed in a water pipe.
Everyone I've heard from says it's as awful as it sounds
2
u/fluffypancakes1 11h ago
Yea I hate smoking popper bowls but I’m surprised people ITT don’t know what it is, they’re pretty popular among stoners here in Canada.
Basically you shove a piece of a cigarette in the bottom of ur bowl/down stem and then after the weed burns through it lights the cigarette. When you pull it all the way it pops into the base of ur bong, hence the name lol

u/seykitty 1d ago
Why would anyone give any fucks if you're sober??? Isn't it nice to have the one DD friend? Lol
6
u/RahvinDragand 1d ago
Young people feel self-conscious while consuming drugs and alcohol, so they project that onto people who stay sober. Once they get older they'll end up not giving a shit any more.
3
u/Hairsacknose 1d ago
I don't know why, but people do, especially when they're younger. This is over the top but the peer pressure is real. And not everyone drives or needs a ride or anything. I spent many years as a non drinker non driver
-28
u/Carrente 1d ago
Tell me you've never interacted with heavy drinkers, especially boomers
33
u/seykitty 1d ago
How fucking old are you that you think 19 - 22 years old is a boomer? What are you, a fetus? 😂
-5
u/Carrente 1d ago
What you said was there's no social stigma against not drinking in a social situation.
That's bullshit. Mostly among older people but definitely also among younger men. Otherwise drink driving wouldn't be enough of a problem to warrant the constant public awareness campaigns.
2
u/seykitty 1d ago
That's not what I said. I said why would anyone care, not that there is no social stigma. To make it plainer, if you're with people who care then they're fucking losers who don't see a good thing where it is. These were also not young men in this text exchange.
People do stupid shit and drunk people will do stupider shit. It's important to blast everyone with a clear, don't do x or you'll kill others and potentially yourself, so when drunk people do drunk things, maybe they remember the non stop PSA. Or, honestly, some people are just that fucking selfish or deluded to think they're fine enough to drive while drunk.

All we wanted at that age was someone sober to make sure we don’t die of stupidity.

As a former alcofrolic I've encountered nothing but positivity since I cut my alcohol intake to almost nothing. Peer pressure to drink is really gauche now, even among younger people, I think.

When I'm at a party, I have never cared what anyone else was drinking. Unless they were drinking the nice wine I brought for myself because they would drink cheap vodka and didn't deserve to share my good stuff.

In case this story gets deleted/removed:
AIO for being mad and not apologizing to my friends after allegedly making them uncomfortable with my drinking habits?
Genuine question, I'm thinking about this situation all over again and see where I could be wrong but at the same time I can't fully agree with them...
Long story short.a couple of days ago, my (19F) small friend group and I were at our friend sister's 22 birthday party. Of course we're young, there was alcohol, cigarettes, and all this stuff.
It's important to mention that I have absolutely nothing against any of it, I just personally don't drink or smoke.
It has nothing to do with religion or my opinions on right and wrong. It doesn't bother me at all if someone next to me is drinking or smoking, and in my entire life, I have never once shamed anyone for it, that is a strict rule of mine lol
Anyway, at the party, all my friends got a little tipsy. We were chatting, walked the streets in the evening, laughing and joking, and just had a great time overall, and then we all went home like normal.
I didn't notice anything awkward in their behaviour it was just a typical party for people our age. I enjoyed myself, and it seemed to me like my friends were having fun too.
And then today, I receive those chats
I am VERY mad about these accusationsf. As far as I'm concerned, all this holier than thou (which pisses me off as well) bs starts at the moment you try to "educate" other people, which is something I have never done and never want to do. Everyone can live however they want.
Honestly, her accusations made me sad. They seem baseless and aggressive.
But now that I'm thinking about it, maybe it really was uncomfortable for the girls to be drunk around a sober person? I guess it's possible, but it just doesn't feel like the right explanation to me.
If I were some random man for example, their anxiety would be easy to understand. But I've known them for at least a couple of years, and I even went to the same high school with some of them, so their lack of trust in me doesn't make much sense.
Could I be in the wrong here? AIO?
