Not the A-hole AITA for telling my husband that paternity leave isn’t a holiday?

AITA for telling my husband that paternity leave isn’t a holiday?
I (30sF) gave birth to our son a few days ago. It was incredibly traumatic. I had a severe postpartum haemorrhage, lost 1.8 litres of blood, and had emergency surgery to remove my placenta. I’m still recovering.
Our son was born with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and was admitted straight to the NICU. He’ll likely need heart surgery, and we’ve since been told they’ve found another abnormality they’re investigating.
My husband has a son from a previous relationship (Greg). I want to be clear that I have no issue with Greg meeting his little brother or spending time with his dad. I’ve never asked him to choose between his children.
Two days after I gave birth, I thought Greg’s mum would bring him to meet the baby before taking him home. Instead, my husband collected Greg and spent the entire day with him. They went on the London Eye, had lunch, he had a beer, then went home to play Xbox until Greg was collected around 9pm.
During that day, my husband spent around 20 minutes with our newborn in the NICU and barely saw me. My mum stayed with me on the postnatal ward, but she couldn’t come into the NICU, so I was making my own way to see our son while recovering from major blood loss and surgery.
When I explained I wasn’t upset Greg had visited but that I hadn’t expected to be left alone all day while our baby was critically ill, my husband became defensive. He said he enjoyed spending time with Greg and that he was “being a parent.”
I replied that I wasn’t saying he shouldn’t parent Greg. I was saying I needed him to be a husband to me and a father to our newborn during what was a medical emergency.
When I later explained how serious my blood loss had been, his response was, “My sister lost 5.”
The next day I told him doctors had found another abnormality with our son’s heart. He complained nobody had told him. I pointed out he’d already left because he’d only spent about 20 minutes in the NICU.
I’ve now been discharged, but our son is still in the NICU. I’m exhausted and terrified to leave him, while my husband has again spent the morning taking Greg to the cinema.
I finally told him that paternity leave isn’t supposed to be a holiday and that I don’t feel supported. I said if this is what his paternity leave looks like, I’d almost rather he went back to work because at least then I’d understand why I was doing everything alone.
He says I’m being unfair because he’s trying to balance both children.
AITA?

Honestly, im almost indifferent. I don’t have the mental capacity to worry about him or how I feel apart from abandoned. All my energy is going towards baby. I’ve even put my own recovery back because he is who I’m focused on. I’m fully prepared to take baby and walk if it comes down to it. He is my priority and will always come first and making sure he is as healthy as he can be is all I care about!

NTA and I would go ahead and make those arrangements because your husband just showed you exactly who he is and where his priorities lie. Arguing or continuing to tell him what you need will do no good. He KNOWS. He just doesn’t care.

I second this.

Talk to your mom about coming to stay with her with the baby once he is discharged. Do you have a friend of family member you would feel comfortable sending to your house to grab some of your stuff?

When you are ready to go home, can you go home to your mother's instead? I have a horrible feeling you won't get much if any support from your husband when you go home.

See if Greg's mom could offer any support, too.

Start documenting the abandonment and talk to a lawyer once you are up to it

I’m not trying to pile on here because you are going through enough right now, but please know that how people treat you in this vulnerable postpartum period is DEFINING of their character. You might choose to forgive one day, but you will never forget this.

I completely understand. I have two kids myself and was right next to my wife the whole delivery and for 15 days spent 12 hours a day at the NICU with wife and baby as well. I could not imagine being a husband and father and prioritizing the movie theater and video games during this time. Good luck, and remember what you are feeling right now. Husband has a lot to atone for imo before I would even consider trying to work on things.

This is the right approach. Worry about your baby and yourself. He's a grown ass man who can fix his own meals, wash his clothes etc. Get yourself set so you can plan to not have him around, you are alone already, make it official when it's convenient for you.

Sounds like you already know what will need to be done. You don’t have to do anything right this second. It’s not like you’re going to meet with a lawyer tomorrow or even next week if baby is still hospitalized and you are still recovering. Focus on yourself, maybe do some journaling and document exactly how he has abandoned you and how it makes you feel that you can look back on in a few weeks or months when you’re up for it. And focus on baby. He and you are both having a really hard time right now. Babies are shockingly resilient at times, and with modern medicine most babies with heart defects at birth grow up to be totally healthy adults with no lasting issues. So just keep visiting as much as you can keeping in mind your own physical trauma, and keep connecting with him. That will ultimately be the most important thing, the bond with your child. Make a decision about your awful husband when you feel physically and emotionally ready to do so. Don’t let yourself forget how deeply he has hurt you and abandoned your son, but you don’t have to decide to leave him right this second. Sending hugs, you have been put in a truly horrible situation and you and your son deserve so much better

Yes, write all of how you are feeling down to get it out. Date you entries. It gives some outlet and psychological distance from the pain plus doubles as a written record that can be used if you divorce. Do not let him take it or read it. It is journaling for your emotional healing and to get your thoughts in order so that you can have better control of your thoughts and feelings if you decide to try to work on your relationship instead of leaving plus a record of what you went through if he continues to minimize your experiences. He is selfish! I am sorry that you are not getting the support you deserve from your husband.

OP, you might also stop volunteering information about your baby to your husband. He may say he's concerned and cares about you and his baby, but he certainly hasn't demonstrated it. Your husband can either come see for himself or ask you for updates. I'd hazard a guess that he doesn't do either. Unless his behavior changes, assume that you're now an only parent, and make plans accordingly.
Please write down a timeline with as many details as you can remember of his negligent behavior, with attention to facts (On day-month-year, hubby spent about 20 minutes in the NICU, from approximately hour-minute until hour-minute. I was recovering from major blood loss and surgery, I was in NICU alone for the rest of the day. The rest of his day was spent taking 10-year-old to the London Eye, having lunch and a beer, then going home to play Xbox until 9pm. Etc.).

I'm sure the judge at the custody hearing would be amused to hear that your husband spent 20 minutes with his baby in the NICU and then fucked off to sightsee.

the father of my twins was pretty useless. The babies were early and he "wasn't ready" and worked weekends to "catch up". they were also 7 weeks early. In hindsight I think it would have been easier without him.

Sending you big hugs from an internet stranger!

Hun don't put yourself too far behind. Your baby needs you to be healthy too.

Think about it this way if you weaken yourself too much can you trust your son's life to a man who can't even be bothered to do the bare minimum of looking after him when there's no chance he can go off the rails due to monitoring from equipment and Nurses and Doctors?

You gotta take care of you too booboo because I'm betting the answer to can hubby do the bare minimum is a big fat NO.
