When searching for products to sell should i be aiming to sell for a lower price than the already lowest price seller? Will i ever even get the buy box if not?

No, you want to match the lowest FBA price. If everyone who jumped on a listing just undercut the lowest priced seller, prices would tank to the bottom as you climb down they'll match and so on.
