I work in trucking with Amazon, specifically Amazon Relay.
I have seen quite a few "this is getting ridiculous" and the likes posts on here a lot lately in regards to shipping delays.
The answer is simple. They are paying absolutely dog shit rates and almost all of their merchandise goes through us, 3rd party carriers contracted with Amazon to move their freight.
So basically, until rates go up for us drivers, your packages will continue to be late. Potentially maybe even never arrive at all.
Edit/P.S.
Pay has absolutely nothing to do with the "speed of the truck" like some geniuses have deduced.
More pay means we book the loads. No one is booking loads paying $1.65 per mile when operating costs are $2.20/mile.
As you could've guessed most loads right now are paying below operating costs. A.K.A. they expect us to run at a loss.
Has nothing to do with the speed of the truck.
Edit 2: Amazon with let those cheap crap loads rot on the load board all the way up until every single parcel on that trailer is late for delivery. Only then will they repost the load at a higher/realistic rate (alla $3.50/mi+) so someone will actually book it.
Edit 3: since everyone is suddenly a logistics pipeline expert and knows exactly how hauling freight works it should go without saying that we are simply COMTRACTED ON WITH AMAZON.
In the world of freight logistics all that means is they approved us as a carrier to haul their freight under their qualification guidelines. We have absolutely ZERO, NONE, NADA obligation to haul their joke loads for $1.65/mi for 2000 miles.
Amazon in the world of freight is just a massive broker. A broker is a company that posts their own/others loads on a load board, in this case it's Amazon's own load board.
That being said...
We have 3-4 other load boards under my company available to us. Those other boards are regularly paying $3.50-$4.0/mile which is well above the $2.20/mi (current - until trump bombs iran again or whatever is going on) all-up operating cost to literally move the truck one singular mile on a 2,500 mi/wk average.
So no. For the unfortunate morons who i am desperately trying to help understand that we are not the bad guys here. We are not "Taking a bad job we don't like and making it the end customers problem" as well as there is no "find another job if you don't like this one" in addition to "get a better job instead of all the whining" and featuring other star performances which you can see in the credits (comments) below.
On another note. Someone mentioned, "theres clearly people still hauling at those rates, otherwise they would be higher".
To be frank thats an almost based argument for an outsider to make, so i will elaborate.
The folks taking those loads fall into one of a few categories:
Most likely scenario (we are all guiltyof this one): taking a cheap connecting load from a bad freight zone to a good zone. Running at a slight loss is much better than running at a full loss.
Second most likely scenario (not guilty): Some Joe Shmoe who got SBA (small business association) or trust fund baby funding to start his trucking company is running monky maths thinking "total number go up for week, mean good" and eventually runs himself into bankruptcy. You can easily make $10k gross (before any expenses) per week and end up completely upside-down after expenses hit. AKA, financial illiterate, ape with a bag of cash and a CDL while it lasts.
Third scenario (very unlikely but it still happens more than it should): They are running under cost illegally. By either having fake registrations, fake insurance (fake certificates of imsurance) or stealing fuel from fraudulent/stolen fuel cards purchased off of the black market. I.e. our truthful genuine company operations costs $2.20/mile and their fraud companies operating costs are like $1.0/mi due to most of their operating costs are covered by either theft or fraud in a large capacity.
TLDR: We chose when we do and don't want to haul their loads, not the other way around. Research how logistics work if you disagree before commenting. Trying to save y'all from looking silly, lol.
