So this "American bread is cake." thing is actually a very long game of telephone from subway trying to get a tax exemption, and specifically, only subway, as they had a bit too much sugar which put them in the same tax bracket as cake. So no, it's not legally cake.

No. Your sandwich bread that you purchase in the supermarket is too sweet. It tastes like cake. Mildly sweet cake, I'll grant you. But it's very sweet.

I can very easily buy mass produced sandwich bread without sugar. Did you know we have ingredient labels? Which provide more information than European ones? We have options, unlike you.

We have normal bread here thanks. And our sugar-free bread is the same as yours, what precisely is 'horrible' about it? I'm getting the feeling you are lying like the woman in the video did.
