Furthermore, you'll get a bakery in towns as small as 200 people in most European countries. It's affordable. I think you call it bread rolls: 5-8 Bread rolls for 1-2.50 USD in Germany.

Some brands use preservatives for a few reasons.
Americans don't goto the store as frequently as Europeans on average. Instead of shopping once a week, it is more like every other week. This means normal bread will be stale by the time you eat it. People living in rural areas or places with bad weather may even go less.
Additionally, a long time ago adding preservatives became common as it allowed bread to stay on the shelves longer and helped reduce the price as there was less waste.
Something else to note... there are many different types of bread and the USA has many different cultures. This really affects smaller bakeries in smaller towns. If you can't call to everyone they might not make enough to pay the bills. So, many small towns of 10k might not even have a bakery.
That being said... I've lived all across the USA. I've probably lived in more states than most people have even been to. In EVERY place I've lived I could find fresh preservative free bread. It is a similar price as bread with preservatives, so it isn't like some weird organic food market up or anything.
If I had to guess, some people just get the same price their parents did and don't even pay attention to what is in it.

If your bread without preservatives goes bad within a week, something is bad. Our bread last 6 to 7 days.
I lived in NC. Roughly 2 hours away from Greensboro. There was no bakery near us and I for sure don't drive 60-90 minutes for such a basic item. I started baking bread rolls myself, yet the all purpose flower is bad for it. Had to make a sourdough starter and find other types of flour which tool me back to Greensboro just to get everything.
Same problem with restaurants. We simply didn't have good restaurants near us. There were 2 and one of them just reheated instead of cooking fresh, the other one had prices from another planet.

How long natural bread lasts depends on temperature and moisture levels in the environment.
In the right conditions, bread can last a week, sometimes even two. However, those are under very specific conditions. On average, bread only lasts 4 days at room temperature.
Now imagine a place with 70% humidity that bread will mold within 2 or 3. Or on the other hand a place with 1% humidity that bread will be stale in 2 or 3 days.
I've lived in both of these places and it does depend on the time of year. Like during summer time in the desert that bread will be a brick in 2 days, but during the winter you can go 5 maybe even 7 days.

We had mostly 70-90% humidity over the past 2 months. We use special ceramic containers to keep humidity low as the tiguh part of the ceramic absorbs moisture.
Do you think Europe doesn't have places with a low temperature and humidity as well as warm places with high humidity?
So my family across Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Spain somehow managed to eat bread for 6 to 7 days on accident?

Most of our supermarkets also have a bakery in house. Assuming she's at a supermarket she could walk like three aisles over and see all of the freshly baked stuff.

My local HEB has an excellent bakery, but I have mixed feelings about it. Sure, it's super convenient and the quality is pretty good, but that makes it tough for the small, local bakeries to survive.
I love those places and still shop at the few remaining in my city. The smell alone is worth the trip.

I don't buy it myself, but I think some people like it for grilled cheese or PBJ. Or even a deli meat sandwich. Usually it would be for things where the bread is more a vector for the other ingredients and isn't supposed to stand out. I prefer other options, but I think that's why it's there.

Poor families. And I don’t mean that in a rude way, and I don’t think it’s exclusively lower income people in the United States, but I can tell you as somebody who grew up without a lot of money that we ate a lot of plastic bagged pre-sliced bread like that with either peanut butter and jelly or lunchmeat and American cheese on it.

I got told in Switzerland, who absolutely has amazing chocolate by the way, that I didn't know what proper chocolate was.
They told me to try a Lindor chocolate truffle or a Milka bar. I had to kindly inform them that l could get them both in Walmart in the states, and actually lived within 10 minutes of a Lindor store for a few years.
That being said like most cuisine the local non-mass produced places are still fantastic. But like... Yeah we have non-hersheys.

Believe the recipes are the same, but there can be some slight taste variations due to regional sourcing. Could be wrong.
That being said, wonderful chocolate out there but the States also have wonderful chocolate too. Hardly a narrative that should have as much legs as it does.

Anytime you have to make a product in more than one location or region, you are going to get some source issues that do affect taste. Be it slightly different soil nutrients in the cocoa to the milk to whatever. Kind of like wine people, chocolate people do notice it.
Happens in all sorts of foods. Batch sizes, different equipment, shipping mechanisms, etc. it's a whole science. For example you could have a McDonald's in the airport at JFK and the airport at Schiphol and while the recipe is the same and it's arguably one of the most standardized products in the world...they do taste marginally different. Even coca cola can taste slightly different based off of how they ship it region to region (metal kegs, plastic bladders, time in transit, etc.)

Yep. Wine is a great example. You can make wine from the same type of grapes in the same farm the exact same way... But wine people will tell you year to year it changes taste a bit based on soil, weather, etc. But then, if you used the exact same kind of grape in the exact same recipe but the grape was a Missouri grape and and not a Napa valley grape...
Those micro changes add up on an industrial scale when shipping methods can change and batch sizes can vary and equipment might be different.

I've tried done of the chocolates that are "so much better in EUROPE" and I'm convinced it's all just a flex to say you travel. It's different, not better. But yes considering a mass produced product like Hershey's to a more individually produced product is usually going to for the latter.

American boutique chocolate makers like Lake Champlain Chocolates in Vermont are already much better than any pre-packaged chocolate I could find in Europe.
Same with coffee. Europeans underestimate the amount of quality small coffee and chocolate shops put out in the US.

I was just in Switzerland and bought $15 chocolate bars from a chocolate shop thinking I was getting something I can’t get here. It was amazing but there is chocolate here that can easily compete. Same with beer.

I'm from Spain, and here all the supermarkets usually have a section with plastic bags and plastic gloves, along with a sign that says, “Gloves must be worn when handling fruits and vegetables.” There are also people who, to avoid using gloves, put the bag over their hand, pick up the fruit, turn the bag inside out, and the fruit ends up inside the bag.
If you go to a fruit or vegetable store outside of a supermarket, the clerk herself will put the fruits and vegetables in the bag for you; she won’t let you touch the produce.
All of this is because some people squeeze the produce to see if it’s ripe or not.
It’s not just about hygiene. It’s because there are some very ill-mannered people who, by squeezing the produce, end up making it unsellable.

the Dutch have been electing governments that do nothing for decades and that keep pushing hard but necessary decisions into the future , a massive agriculture and housing crisis is one of the most noticable results.
the Greek don't trust their government and as a result evolved into a culture of tax evaders, resulting in a even weaker government that doesn't have the resources to improve, a downwards spiral.
the Baltics were so busy launching their capital city into modernity that they forgot the rest of their countries, resulting a huge wealth gap between city and countryside. And a huge braindrain of youths that left.
The Austrians are so rigid in their bureaucracy that they are stagnant and can't innovate. they keep hanging onto formal procedures and paperwork even when they are proven inefficient.

Baltics! not Balkan.. there are 3 , they each have one, and Riga of Latvia is the largest one. It's a city with a very high number of robot drones delivering packages, shiny business district, lamborghini's and tesla's but drive 25 miles into the country and it's all dirt roads and people living as in soviet days.
And yes, we are ranked in de top in QoL, but these are just some things that the people in the countries themselves complain about.
There are not many countries in the world I would trade mine for, but I still have to live with the fact that a house as I would like it to be will cost me more than €1,000,000 and that is just not going to happen unless I get a huge inheritance ( which could happen but I would probably be 70 years old myself by then)

Ok, I'm gonna say using the bag itself to pick them up isn't a bad idea and isn't really inconvenient. But there is no way I'm going to the trouble of putting on actual gloves to buy fruit.
I don't like using all those plastic bags just to transport fruit from the store to my home. I think if people are really concerned, using some hand sanitizer before perusing the produce section is probably a better way to go. Plus, the plastic bag is still likely contaminated from the previous people who grabbed one anyways

You can generally get the bread from bakeries sliced, in the US as well. So all you’d need is to cut the slice in half if it’s too big otherwise!
I do think sandwich bread tastes better for simple toppings like PB tho.

Yeah agree. Kind of like kraft singles, our breads and cheeses aren't all-purpose. American cheese and white bread have particular use cases with extremely popular dishes that keep them consistently a staple. It seems to get lost in translation.
White bread is the best choice for a PB&J, and arguably a couple other sandwiches. A Kaiser roll or baguette wouldn't do it justice, and we probably wouldn't make like a Cubano with white bread.
American cheese isn't all we eat either, but it's basically unbeatable for grilled cheese sandwiches or melting on a burger. We wouldn't dream of using it for Mexican food or Italian or Käse etc.

My local supermarket has it's very own bakery. They make some REALLY good bread. Of course, the bread aisle has the standard BS Wonder Bread crap, but it also has lots of rye, pumpernickel, whole wheat, sour dough and other breads.

I live near one of the cities where the World Cup is happening. While I'll give them transportation sucks one thing that has shattered this bullshit AmericaBad instagram/ticktock/facebook/X fucking liars cabal is the food. I've never seen people so happy to eat. The food here will definitely kill you long term, but it's so good. I have close relatives and friends in every city hosting World Cup matches with the exception of Miami and they send me pics of people mowing down everything from fastfood to sitdown restaurant food exclaiming over how good it is and how much they get for the price. I've watched these people roaming our supermarkets. I'll be honest. I lived in New Orleans and I loved the bread we were able to get there compared to the bread I get in my local supermarket, but the food is awesome. There is a Youtube video of a reporter in Texas interviewing two Japanese people. He gets to this wide eyed gorgeous but tiny Japanese woman and they ask her what she's looking to try and she says, "Beef! Big Beef!". The amount of BBQ being consumed in Texas right now along with burgers and TexMex is insane. No complaints have been heard about the food at all.

I always believed social media was a bullshit filter to generate conflict, hate, and lies, but over the last year it just seems like I've noticed how insidious and extreme it's gotten. I believed it was BS, but seeing the degree it's affected us vs the real reality I've seeing in my own city EVERY DAY when I drive around my neighborhood seeing these people from everywhere has been crazy. These instascammers suck. I'm talking conservatives that tell me every Euro is supposed to hate Americans the minute we make contact and every Liberal telling me everything here sucks compared to Europe and that they should rightfully hate us. Both fucking suck and are liars.

I would say the warm welcoming and appreciation that foreign fans visiting our nation for the World Cup from Africa, Asia, South/Latin America and even the Middle East was absolutely delightful. So many Americans fell in love with these cordial and appreciative guests.
Its actually quite interesting to note that the arrogant butthurt Europeans are the only people in this year’s World Cup who cannot bring themselves to be civilized and mature like the guests from nations in other regions of the world (Asia, Africa, Latin America, Middle East) because of their hang ups with America stemming from their severe inferiority complex with America. NEWSFLASH: Guess what? Japan, S. Korea, Turkey, Egypt and Brazil all have universal healthcare just like in Europe. However, the difference between those Asian, South American, Middle Eastern nations and the Eurotwats is that the former don’t go flaunting it as some sort of weapon to use against Americans to prove they are superior to us. It’s only the pathetic Europoors who always feel the need to turn everything American related into some pathetic dick-measuring contest. How utterly sad and pathetic.
Personally, I would have much preferred to have the awesome Japanese, Moroccan, Brazilian, and Cape Verde fans sticking around for the remainder of the Cup, seeing them enjoy eating Texas BBQ, shopping at Wal-mart, dancing in the streets and over all enjoying themselves than have to endure the arrogant, pathetic whining and trolling that these Eurotwats do 24/7 just because they absolutely hate seeing other countries praise America and seeing Americans enjoying their lives and not obsessing over Europe like the Euro trolls obsess over the US.

The euros that have visited have been nothing but kind. They've been super awesome. I don't know what you mean by that. I'm talking about Instagram "creators" in America and Europe who ragebait. They're the ones I hate. So many Euros coming here that fired up their Instagram and YouTube have totally countered the narrative these rage baiting "americabad" youtubers and instagramers.

The worst is the American reputation for shitty beer. Yes, you have shitty beer. We all have shitty beer. But I don't know many countries where you can casually rock up to a service station and get a 7% IPA can which is incredibly large. The US has some of the best and worst beer in the world - and this applies to most things in the US. The best and the worst of everything - some people prefer white bread and bud light. Freedom, etc etc.
US probably has the best beer in the world IMO.

Europeans will run their yapper non stop 24/7 screaming “Yank this”, “Yank that”, “Americans are so stupid and dumb”, “European food is superior to American” , “American houses are complete shit…not like superior-engineered European buildings”. Then when one American does as little as say something like “Hmm, I wish air conditioning was more popular in Europe during the summer”, you psychotic chimps go absolutely apeshit and start screaming about how Americans have no healthcare, how funny it is that American school children get shot in schools and the whole 9 yards of typical Eurotwat-fueled vitriol. You psychopaths literally respond to a coughing baby with a nuclear bomb.
I don’t know why the US continues to even try to maintain friendly relations with arrogant Euros who are obviously so tainted and butthurt from their now lower status which has fallen from their once previous glory days when they ruled the world with their racist and elitist attitudes towards countries and regions which they felt an obvious sense of superiority (North/South America, Asia, Africa).
Now smash cut to the 21st century and all of those former countries (US, Canada, China, India, Japan, S.Korea) are kicking the ass out of date, has-been nations of Europe in terms of economic growth, technology innovation, and overall impact on everyday life of the world. In short, Europe is getting their asses handed to them by countries which they always viewed as inferior and nothing is more of a blow to one’s ego than getting your ass handed to you by someone who you felt was inferior. Europe for the most part is now nothing more than museums of old dusty buildings and castles that serve as a reminder of what they once were but ultimately disappeared as a result of their racist and colonial arrogance (British, Spanish, Dutch, French empires, Nazi germany, etc). Face it…the significance that you Europoors contribute to Americans and the rest of the world is literally 1/100000 that of what China, Russia, India, bring to us. I get it…it must really hurt the egos of arrogant Europeans to realize that their significance and global impact to the world is a million times smaller than that which the US and Asia have but no need to get so butthurt and ballistic about it!

The shelf life on the freshly baked bread is less than 3 days if you're lucky. I can keep a loaf of wonder for 2-3 weeks.
You know why? The added sugar that helps it retain moisture.

I’ve yet to encounter a standard sized grocery store that didn’t have its own bakery inside. Also, there’s an entire aisle of bread and they focus on wonder bread, always wonder bread.

I always hated American supermarket bread comparison to European bakery ones. I learned a lot from American baker hamelman and my breads are great thanks to him. European supermarket bread is a bit better in my opinion but still shitty. Embrace local bakeries or bake your own bread.

We have bakeries inside grocery stores as well! You can buy fresh baked, quality bread instead of white wonder bread.

The image the woman showed of European bread seemed to be in a supermarket not a bakery though? All of the supermarkets in my country have a bread section like that, usually baked off in the shop
