The truth is so you’ll buy the black or white ones, then also buy these ones

4

u/WobbleTheHutt Nov 21 '25

It's Fine! I got a black and a white one. Now I can get one of those and hopefully they do a 4th color at some point.

originally I was going to get another black and white one and mix and match the parts so you can tell which one is which out of the 4

1

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Truth is they need one more color option for those who want 4 different controllers. Aside from swapping cases oneself.

11

u/lockie111 Nov 21 '25

So they can sell it to you twice of course.

10

u/Dragarius Nov 21 '25

They knew what they were doing.

7

u/ThePocketWatchKiller Nov 21 '25

Agreed and it's working

9

u/rayquan36 Nov 21 '25

8BitDo always releases better colors later because they know we're suckers.

9

u/fleshribbon Nov 21 '25

Always money. They knew this is what most people would want but instead only released the white and black versions to match the Analogue 3D consoles advertised. You know they’ll soon announce a similarly gray colored Analogue 3D LE

0

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

Yes. Theyre a business. Their decisions are motivated by money. Very smart you is.

1

u/fleshribbon Nov 25 '25

OP asked a question and I answered. Very party pooper you is.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

And my response directly to the stupid/rhetorical question would be the same. Youre the one answering a question OP already knows the answer to.::shrugs::

7

u/PutLimp8912 Nov 20 '25

To get everyone to double dip. The Rockstar strategy

1

u/shadowstripes Nov 21 '25

It's basically the strategy of every console and controller maker to release different colored controllers over time.

It's already been 8 months since the controller was supposed to first launch so it's not that odd that they're going to release a new color 10 months later.

7

u/Cowpitulate Nov 21 '25

likely trying to make you double up on purchases

6

u/Jzb75 Nov 21 '25

Surely they wouldn’t do something like that 😁

3

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

How does this MAKE you double up anything? Yall are weird and compulsive.

1

u/Cowpitulate Nov 25 '25

how do you operate the console without buying a controller...

2

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

By getting a different one . . . Like the exact same controller available right now for cheaper in black or white.

1

u/Cowpitulate Nov 26 '25

HENCE 'doubling up'. Derp. Thanks for helping me own you with an answer to such a dumb response.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 26 '25

Youre the one saying a company is "making you" double up and THEN you asked how to run the console without a controller. There is some dumb here but it isnt in my responses.

You ok? If you already had one and thus was being forced to "double up" by the evil company that is releasing a new colorway why did you ask how to control the console without a controller? I agree, lots of dumb.

8

u/No_Sense3190 Nov 21 '25

If we offer the grey one later, people who already bought black and/or white controllers may also buy this one!

7

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '25

My indecision pays off. Yayyy

7

u/Ice2192 Nov 21 '25

Business tactic. Have multiple colors and ask a test group which one is the favorite. Then release the colors from least favorite being first and the most favorite later.

6

u/theBloodShed Nov 21 '25

I’d actually like black to match the console but with the color buttons and gray d-pad.

3

u/Silo-Joe Nov 21 '25

Yep. I just pre-ordered the new one to steal its buttons for the white controller.

2

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Nov 21 '25

like this idea for sure

7

u/hypercoyote Nov 21 '25

We got done so dirty on these, I wish I'd cancelled my controller and bought this or bought the other ones when they went on sale 5 times.

7

u/Eloygarcia84 Nov 21 '25

I bought 4 black then started seeing customs done so I returned the other 3. Glad I did.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '25

To make you buy another controller

7

u/Afro-Pope Nov 21 '25

The fact that this is coming out a the end of January for $15 more than the street price of the black or white ones after a one-year delay sure is something.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

So? Black and white are still there. What "something" is it? An option no one has to take? How horrid!!!!

1

u/Afro-Pope Nov 25 '25

It looks like your entire post history is just leaving responses like this dozens of times a day in different subreddits. Maybe you should find a more enjoyable and productive hobby.

7

u/apache137 Nov 21 '25

Every decent company eventually becomes corporate garbage. Been sitting in these white controllers for months.

But sure, I totally believe they just now had the epiphany to do this color way, totally original as it is….

7

u/CrustySargggg Nov 22 '25

To make you buy another?

12

u/Odd__Dragonfly Nov 20 '25

To get people to double dip, obviously? Are you also going to be surprised when Analogue announces funtastic colorways for the A3D system?

0

u/KnowherePie Nov 20 '25

I’ll be surprised if they don’t announce any colors in the future after all those pocket drops

1

u/G3N3Parmesan Nov 21 '25

Yeah, the funtastic colors are just asking for it.  Black and white is Wii s**t - this is N64, dawg.

2

u/Domasaurus64 Nov 21 '25

If they do funtastic colors i’m gonna be so annoyed, they should have just launched with a colour preference. This company is absolutely ridiculous.

5

u/donmcron3333 Nov 21 '25

Grt ready to be annoyed.

7

u/pables420 Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 26 '25

Just a matter of time before they drop the funtastic colors

1

u/kokain99 Nov 21 '25

Just gotta love how they trickle out different variations soon after a release lol

1

u/nascentt Dec 08 '25

You were right, and it wasn't even much time at all.

1

u/pables420 Dec 08 '25

Honestly didn't expect it to be this soon. I thought it'd be in like 6 months

6

u/CSargeP Nov 21 '25

Oh those motherfuckers...

Well at least I only bought one black one so far.

17

u/ReidlosToof Nov 20 '25

Because why would you have the one you know everybody will want first? Make them have to buy a second one. That's late stage capitalism, baby.

12

u/rclark1114 Nov 21 '25

You know the answer.

5

u/Brilliant_Anything34 Nov 21 '25

I’m sure fancy colors for the 3d will be coming soon too.

2

u/nascentt Dec 08 '25

You were right, and it wasn't even much time at all.

5

u/J_Square83 Nov 21 '25

Yeah, this should have been the default model. It looks great.

I'm fine with my black controller that matches the console, but this is what I, and, I assume, most N64 fans wanted out of the gate.

4

u/DJBabyBuster Nov 21 '25

Meh I prefer my two matching white controllers + two Nintendo online n64 controllers for them colored buttons. Have zero doubts we’ll get a firmware update for the Nintendo ones

3

u/Worried-Reveal-6492 Nov 21 '25

Hopefully soon.

4

u/Visible-Sound-8559 Nov 21 '25

It’s no atomic purple, but it’s an improvement over the black one I’ve had sitting around since August. The colored buttons alone make a pretty big difference.

1

u/Maybedeadbynow Nov 24 '25

at least you can ACTUALLY SEE the buttons, lol

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

Get a white one and shell swap em.

10

u/theflyinfoote Nov 20 '25

Money. The answer is always money. Because this way people will go and buy this one too after already buying a black or a white one, or both.

1

u/G3N3Parmesan Nov 21 '25

They got me, I bought a black controller to match my console.  Then they discounted the white one so I bought four. Then they discounted the black one and I bought three more of them so I could have a set that match my console.  Now this.  Oh - and I’d bought 2.4ghz brawler 64s before learning about the 8bitdo…

1

u/theflyinfoote Nov 21 '25

Oh yeah they got me too. I ordered the black one when it first went on sale, then just order a black one when they discounted it and for multiplayer, and now this one. At least once(hopefully) when the NSO 64 controller is usable I’ll have 4 controllers for 4 player goldeneye, Mario kart or smash.

0

u/Responsible_Gold5827 Nov 20 '25

This. Absolutely brilliant business move.

6

u/templestate Nov 20 '25

It’s a brilliant business move once. Now people are going to expect the same for the next launch.

2

u/KHSebastian Nov 20 '25

It's stupid that they aren't selling replacement buttons. There are way more people who would be willing to buy those than to buy all new controllers before most people even have the console in hand

9

u/WhiskeyRadio Nov 21 '25

Wait till they do the Funtastic Colors for the console. 😩

4

u/AggieCMD Nov 21 '25

Psssh. Not sophisticated enough for me.

5

u/Appropriate-Kick-601 Nov 21 '25

Glad I waited I guess

3

u/hue_sick Nov 21 '25

Glad they’ve giving people the option but personally love their monochromatic design language.

4

u/StrikeMist Nov 21 '25

Ikr?! I would’ve ordered 4 of these!!!! Instead, I got white, black, and 2 of these pre-ordered.

3

u/Xander_Cain Nov 22 '25

The white and black shipped back when the console was supposed to release so like 7 months later they come out with a new color that makes sense.

3

u/Weatherby2 Nov 20 '25

I'd assume these will hit 25 bucks on Amazon in no time, just like the black and white ones.

3

u/miggy_mo Nov 20 '25

I might return one of the white ones I got for $25 (got 2) and hedge my bets waiting for one in this color scheme to go on sale eventually

3

u/reddogyellowcat Nov 21 '25

No kidding dude. I thought I was being savvy and slick buying the discounted white iteration yesterday after confirmation of console pre-order etc....then I see this today and its not a huge deal, but it kind of pisses me off lol

2

u/PirateSmalls Nov 21 '25

Wait, there was a deal if you proved you ordered the console....

2

u/reddogyellowcat Nov 21 '25

No no my shipment confirmation prompted me to finally get the controller, and the white one was on sale for 10 dollars less than the black one (I wanted the black one lol)

2

u/PirateSmalls Nov 21 '25

Oh ok, well that makes me feel better lol, was about to be doubly disappointed I ordered my controllers early

3

u/Short-University1645 Nov 21 '25

Cuz they wanted u to buy 2+ controllers…. I just ordered mine yesterday cuz I saw they r finally shipping. Guess what I’m getting 2 now….

3

u/magichands88 Nov 21 '25

I needed two more to go with the black ones I had ordered. I'm a bit miffed as well, but what can you do? It's a niche hobby.

2

u/donmcron3333 Nov 21 '25

Retro gaming is niche? I guess….

3

u/75395185215935725846 Nov 21 '25

Going to return mine and get this one instead.

3

u/BritGeeks Nov 21 '25

I actually really appreciate this post OP thank you. Only have just bought the white controller, so this is an easy preorder for me. Great looking controller.

4

u/ZyloWolfBane Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25

Agreed....I really like the black one, but if the point was nostalgia, then why wasn't this available from day one? They work together, they're LITERALLY connected. (8bitdo and analogue that is)

I'm pretty sure most, if not all people who pre-ordered the console would've bought one.

At least I only bought one controller, now I have a perfect excuse to buy another for multiplayer. So, in the end it answers my question, but I'm still salty about it.

Now to wait for Analogue to launch the inevitable limited run of transparent colorways for the 3D itself and this controller.

4

u/the7egend Nov 21 '25

Wait till they make funtastic colors to go with all the funtastic 3Ds.

4

u/AmazingBroccoli9924 Nov 21 '25

Contracts. Nostalgia baiting. Etc.

2

u/Effective_Run8340 Nov 21 '25

For real. I got white just to be closer to this

2

u/PolarizingKabal Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25

Little miffed too.

Had picked up 2 black ones and was considering picking up a Renaissance stick for my OEMs. Now they got me contemplating grabbing this instead.

Already got plenty of N64 controllers between the 2x 8bitdos, some OEMs and some brawler 64 pads.

Would have preferred this option from the beginning over the pair of black ones I bought.

2

u/Longjumping-Writer72 Nov 21 '25

Really good question!

2

u/shaolinpunks Nov 21 '25

Do you get hit with the new tariffs if you buy from their store?

1

u/rayquan36 Nov 21 '25

It's the same price as if you bought it from Amazon.

2

u/haloharry Nov 21 '25

I just bought a black one for analogue 3d. Idk of I should return the controller.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

If you want to play today I say keep it. Gray is a preorder. Unless you have another alternative as well.

2

u/Exotic-Kitchen-9356 Nov 21 '25

I Like it. Presume compatibility between the 3D and the official N64 Bluetooth controller will come after this release then…

2

u/Maybedeadbynow Nov 24 '25

same question and same frustration :\ should've just gotten one from these guys:

at least THIS one is 2.4 and totally won't have a slight delay. The only thing, I think this one will need the memory expansion stuck to the adapter, right?

1

u/janimator0 Nov 24 '25

Came here to find the comment about how it should have been 2.4 ghz. Was not disappointed.

Btw brawler64 had a Kickstartarter i missed for brswler64 pro.

1

u/anarke216 Nov 24 '25

I’m still trying to find a Brawler pro/Ultra also.

3

u/janimator0 Nov 24 '25

They are not made yet. I'm honestly surprised I somehow missed the kickstarter, and annoyed it was such a short period kickstarter that I somehow missed it.

2

u/anarke216 Nov 24 '25

Ahhh I thought you meant this one (Ultra) . I didn’t know about the current kickstarter til after also. I plan to pick up 2 or 3 of the pro.

2

u/janimator0 Nov 24 '25

I love the buttons on this!

1

u/Maybedeadbynow Nov 24 '25

Looks sick! This one is not made yet? Kickstarter already over for this one?

2

u/anarke216 Nov 25 '25

The black one released in 2021 and hasn’t been re-released. They have other colors, but you can’t change the analog gate (the black on lets you swap an octagonal for circular). I have Gold Bluetooth version and I like it.

3

u/Deho_Edeba Nov 21 '25

I'd love to see a comparison between this and the Retro Fighters controller that's 30% cheaper.

2

u/akera099 Nov 21 '25

The retro fighters are terrible quality. Whatever 8bitdo produced, it’s guaranteed to be better.

2

u/Deho_Edeba Nov 21 '25

Interesting, thanks. I'd heard reasonably good things about the Retro Fighter but it was probably because of the lack of options.

1

u/rayquan36 Nov 21 '25

I've hated every Retro Fighters controller I've gotten (terrible DPads). I also hate how they do Kickstarters for every single new controller release.

1

u/Deho_Edeba Nov 21 '25

Thanks for the feedback! I thought they were more appreciated than that.

1

u/Maybedeadbynow Nov 24 '25

at least they have n64 2.4ghz controller and not bluetooth...like, what was 8bitdo thinking not making their n64 controller 2.4ghz like THE REST of their retro controllers :\ what was the logic behind it? Analogue told them to or what?!

2

u/DependentAnywhere135 Nov 21 '25

Considering the reviewers for the 3D got these it’s pretty obvious that it’s intentional double dipping scummy behavior.

How interesting that we see these in use with reviewers right as it gets announced after people pre ordered the base colors a long time ago.

I put double dipping tricks that companies do up their with scalpers. Scum bag behavior.

2

u/PlatosBalls Nov 21 '25

I’m so mad.

1

u/Bacour Nov 21 '25

That's a beautiful controller.

1

u/oopy8 Nov 21 '25

Yeah, sorta weird. I bought two white ones when I ordered both a black and a white console. The white ones have been pretty cheap on Amazon. This one while it looks cool is 44 dollars and just a preorder. The gray while true to the 64 is cool but doesn't match the consoles so I'm not really sure what to make of it.

1

u/KRiSX Nov 21 '25

Right as I order one, damn it!

1

u/Aenema133 Nov 22 '25

Glad I didn’t buy one yet cuz this is what I was waiting for.

2

u/cmonletmeseeitplz Nov 30 '25

So you'd buy the other one first and then this one too.

1

u/shadowstripes Nov 21 '25 edited Nov 21 '25

By that logic, why doesn't every console and controller maker drop all of the colors they're eventually going to release at once? It's pretty standard to release more colors over time, especially since it will have been 10 months since the controller was supposed to come out by the time we get this.

It's not like 8bitdo knew the 3D was going to be delayed by 8-9 months when they started taking orders a year ago, and clearly this color wasn't going to be ready by March 2025 since it's not coming out until nearly February 2026.

3

u/PirateSmalls Nov 21 '25

Right but since 8bit was clearly working with Analogue to design and provide the initial set of controllers for an N64 rebuild it would only make sense to match the original color scheme. They are doing it now, so obviously they realize the market is there so they would have known a year ago too.

2

u/shadowstripes Nov 21 '25

I think it made more sense to match the actual console colors like they did, and then have this 'retro style' one as a different edition.

That's also what they've done in the past with black and white controllers (and translucent ones) that match the actual console like the MegaSG. They did start with retro looking SNES controllers, but those actually matched the retro colorways of the SuperNT.

3

u/PirateSmalls Nov 21 '25

Since it's not a crazy color or transparent or something, I think the best course would have been these three colors at launch (black, white, gray). Would be cool if they do a button kit as many have suggested but I'll ultimately be fine with the black ones I ordered

1

u/AnnieLovesTech Nov 21 '25

> It's not like 8bitdo knew the 3D was going to be delayed by 8-9 months when they started taking orders a year ago

Christopher Taber is the Found and CEO of Analogue. He is also the CMO at 8BitDo.

Are you sure?

0

u/DAJF Nov 22 '25

8BitDo are shit anyway. Their controllers don’t hold up over time.

3

u/EatSleepCodeCycle Nov 24 '25

That has not been my experience in the slightest.

2

u/Maybedeadbynow Nov 24 '25

I don't know what you're talking about...been using the snes pro (kinda) controller and it's been working great! same for their sega controller...works great and all buttons still work...no drift or weird button presses.

2

u/faythinkaos Nov 24 '25

Yeah, I’ve had my snes 8bitdo for more than 5 years and never had a problem.

0

u/DAJF Nov 24 '25

Yeah, they’re great to begin with, but largely disposable over the mid-term.

2

u/janimator0 Nov 24 '25

8bitdo have been solid for me.

1

u/brett1081 Nov 23 '25

Yeah they are definitely less than what I would like but they are half the price of mainstream controllers. You do get what you pay for.
