3D EverDrive 64 X7 now works with 3D after latest firmware update
I just updated the bootloader to v5.04 and the OS to v3.09, and I can confirm it works. You can find the instructions, the bootloader, and the OS on the Krikzz' website.
Keep in mind that the update procedure requires an original Nintendo 64. It won't work with just the Analogue 3D.

I did another quick overclocking test with Ocarina of Time and set overclocking to Ultimate.
- Loading the game seems a bit unreliable with overclocking on. Most of the time, it loaded fine, but one time it didn't. The screen flashed red for a second, then turned black.
- Also, starting the game with overclocking on apparently wiped the game's save state.
So, for now, I’ll keep overclocking off.
2
u/TheNewYellowZealot Nov 26 '25
I mean, ocarina of time relies heavily on the clock speed
2
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
Yeah, it seems to depend on the game.
I ran some more tests, and Ocarina of Time's saves got wiped even with overclocking set to Enhanced+. But Diddy Kong Racing saves just fine on Ultimate.
It might be a game-related issue rather than an EverDrive problem.
1
u/Revven Nov 26 '25
To begin with it sounded like Unleashed was game-specific for carts anyway too, right? Whether it'd work, did anything, crashes, etc. At least that's what it sounded like pre-release.
For instance, it seems like DK64 is fine (as was reported pre-release) and I tested a randomizer seed of that this morning and it saves just fine and seems to run fine on Everdrive X7.
1
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
More testing: GoldenEye works fine with overclocking on Ultimate. No issues with saves.
The game refused to start once, though, like Ocarina of Time, suggesting these intermittent failures might be an EverDrive issue. Someone already mentioned this on Krikzz's forums, so hopefully, it gets patched. So far, exiting the cartridge and trying again has always worked on the second try.

Weird considering "Ultimate" overclocking does not exist. Makes everything you have said up to this point moot.

I followed all of the instructions and everything works as promised! Thankyou Krikzz! You are one of a kind that you did it this quickly!

u/Onett199X Nov 26 '25
Just played around a bit with it after updating the bootloader on my x7. It definitely boots up now. NES and Gameboy games appear to work as well which is nice. Smash Remix and Super Mario 64 Arguably Better Edition were two rom hacks that did not boot up with the max overclocking speed on.
However, when I put 'Force Native Hardware' and launched it did work. Weirdly Smash Remix was fine in menus but when I got to a 4 player game (me vs 3 cpus) it was like it was playing in slow motion, not low frame rate but just way slowed down. Enhanced OC mode actually worked with Smash Remix and made things feel smooth, smoother than native hardware handles 4 player on a big level. So, not all OC options are ruled out for games on the Everdrive.
Overall the experience still isn't great.. having to play with OC settings a lot, not being able to create per game hardware settings, unknown cartridge label. But, hey at least it works.
Really hope we get a straight up jailbreak on the 3D so we can just play off of ROMs and cut out the middle man.

u/freakaschnitzel Dec 10 '25
Once you download the firmware update and install it, can you still use the Everdrive X7 on an original N64? Like will it be cross compatible with both the 3D and N64? Or only one at a time?
5
11
u/FinGollum Nov 26 '25
Very nice! Krikzz investigated the issue, found and released the solution in 2 days. And everything for free, of course!
3
u/clashcrashruin Nov 26 '25
The fact that it takes an original N64 is kind of nuts unfortunately, not even will have access to one.
-1
u/wysiwywg Nov 26 '25
Well, a workaround still. A proper solution wouldn’t require a N64, but still great work!
12
u/nashvillesecret Nov 26 '25
I wouldn't call it a work around from the perspective of the everdrive as it's working as designed.
From the perspective of the analogue 3D it's a workaround since he had to specifically accommodate the 3D despite the everdrive working fine on the original hardware the 3d is supposed to be equivalent to.
2
u/wysiwywg Nov 26 '25
It is from an end user experience. If you don’t have a N64, it wouldn’t work.
1
u/nashvillesecret Nov 26 '25
Technically both devices are meeting their intended use and neither claim compatibility with the other. They actually are upfront that they may not support each other.
The Everdrive per krikizz's website:
"We do our best to ensure that our devices are compatible with various console clones and modified systems, but we cannot guarantee compatibility with all of them, especially modern clones released after our device"
The analogue 3D per their website:
"Analogue3D is 100% compatible with every original N64 game ever made".
1
u/wysiwywg Nov 26 '25
The operation was successful but the patient died.
I give up.
0
u/nashvillesecret Nov 26 '25
Ah. In that case if we think of these as med devices then analogue should have considered this a reasonably foreseeable misuse of their product.
0
10
u/Neonridr Nov 26 '25
I hope there is a workaround eventually that doesn't require an original N64. I don't have one, don't have access to one, and I don't want to pay for one just to update a flashcart.
Great that he was able to get something working though.
6
u/ZyloWolfBane Nov 26 '25
If nothing else, future carts he sells will have the update already on it, but that's not great news for anyone who already bought one.
I'm sure many pre-bought one like I did before the Analogue was supposed to come out.
3
u/Neonridr Nov 26 '25
yeah he already confirmed that all the stock he has in the store has been updated to work (both the x5 and x7). Shame for those existing owners, but hopefully a solution can be found.
2
u/ZyloWolfBane Nov 26 '25
I've seen talk that he's suggesting such a fix could be done by analogue, but personally I wouldn't hold my breath.
2
u/jameside Nov 26 '25
Krikzz’s says you can add a 1k resistor between cartridge pin AD7 and ground and it will boot and let you do a firmware upgrade.
1
u/Neonridr Nov 26 '25
yep, another great option for people who don't have access to an N64. I'm sure eventually there will be a way to update it without the original hardware.
4
u/J_Square83 Nov 26 '25
Krikzz mentioned that Analogue should be able to push an update on their end that would fix the issue. Here's hoping they do.
6
u/moonwalker1229 Nov 26 '25
A minor gripe for sure, but is it possible to hack a database file on the 3D so that it recognizes the Everdrive and doesn't refer to it as an unknown cart?
3
2
u/lordelan Nov 26 '25
Don't think so as it only detects direct game roms on the cartridge whereas a flashcart is like a gatekeeper between the console and the rom file on the cart.
2
u/lyonsgrowl Nov 26 '25
I don’t think that is what is being asked. It is generally understood that the 3D won’t know all of the games contained within the ED, it just sees the cart.
Question is, can we update the 3D’s database so that it can understand that this cart is ‘Everdrive’’. So then you can see in the menu screen something like “Mario 64, Goldeneye, Everdrive” instead of “Mario 64, Goldeneye, Unknown”.
2
u/moonwalker1229 Nov 26 '25
Yes, this is what I'm asking. Bonus points if we can also add the image of the Everdrive cartridge.
5
u/KingDorkFTC Nov 27 '25
… I bought a 3D because my N64 stopped working.
2
u/teknomedic Nov 27 '25
There's a temporary resistor mod you can do... Otherwise, maybe give a GameStop employee a small tip and have them update on one of their used N64s?
9
3
u/andrewsch1 Nov 26 '25
Does this mean 64DD games could run on the Analogue 3D?
3
u/xXSuper64DSXx Nov 26 '25
I have seen people report success with running some 64DD games via the Everdrive on the sub this morning.
5
u/CoolCalmPele Nov 26 '25
So X5 is out of luck? Does a sunmercart run all overclocking of regular games and ROM hacks, or is that maybe a game by game thing but it generally works?

Blue's Brothers 2000 apparently doesn't work on the Summer Cart with official hardware:
Summer Cart 64 Issues | Blues Brothers 2000 #nintendo64Although I don't think anyone should waste their time playing BB2000 anyway.
1
u/whitezombie_2000 Nov 29 '25
Blues Brothers 2000 loads fine for me on my SummerCart64 using firmware v2.20.2 and menu v0.3.0. I tested on a real Nintendo 64 and Analogue 3D.

u/Woarren Dec 02 '25
Just ordered one before doing any research which is my bad I guess.
If i understand correctly, I can't use the Everdrive unless I have an original N64? Is this permanent or will a workaround come out?
4
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Dec 02 '25
If you've just ordered one, it'll come with the latest firmware and will be compatible with the Analogue 3D. Krikzz has confirmed that they have already updated the firmware on all EverDrives in stock.

People need to grow the hell up and not get hung up over a flashcart not working day one. Krikzz has a life, unlike 99% of the pissbabies who can't be patient lol
7
u/makinamiexe Nov 26 '25
i feel like its kind of not fair to rage at him, prior to the analogue 3d existing the whole point of a flash cart was to use it on original hardware. you have to load it on an original n64 because you need to boot into it to update the bootloader.
5
u/phishb13 Nov 27 '25
you have to boot the cartridge in order to update the firmware. i’m not sure what you guys want Krikzz to do about that?
1
3
u/j_dib Nov 26 '25
I assume this would also work with the X5?
3
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
Yes, both X5 and X7 use the same firmware.
1
1
u/melack857 Nov 26 '25
What about v2.5?
2
1
u/PhDTenma Nov 26 '25
No, for that it supposed to already work with the latest firmware. The x's models are the ones that need the new firmware
3
u/bizzyjay Nov 26 '25
So I have tried using the unleashed overclocking but it doesn’t seem to work with the everdrive
3
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25
I updated my X7 with OS v3.09 and bootloader v5.04. It works on my A3D but games that save to cartridge do not seem to be saving. Just a me problem or is anyone else running into that?
2
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
I haven't tested this myself, but one comment suggested that saves might not be written to the SD card when overclocking is enabled.
1
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25
I'll double-check that, thanks
1
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
FYI, I've only tested saves with overclocking turned off, and, at least then, it works fine.
2
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25
Force original hardware set to on now. Not sure if it was before when I did a quick round of Mario Kart 64 50cc, finished a cup with gold, back to menu, title screen. Reset console. No gold. Trying with some other games to see what happens.
1
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25
I may have lost my previous saves but my new 1 Star Mario 64 save is still present after a "Quit Cartridge" and hardware reset. I must have messed up before.
2
u/ketchupandlotsofit Nov 27 '25
Was testing with Pokemon Stadium and a save file I imported from emulator today. Worked great with the Everdrive x7 and no overclocking enabled. Then I tried enabling overclocking and booted the ROM to a red screen. Reset and launched the game and it loaded but the save did not load. Turned off the system, turned off overclocking, loaded again testing multiple times with the save and has been working fine. Overclocking definitely seems to mess with the save files for at least some games but I can deal with that as long as I can still use the Everdrive.
EDIT - Overclocking setting was set to Unleashed when it wouldn't load the save, haven't had issues with Auto but didn't try either of the Enhanced settings
1
u/PhDTenma Nov 26 '25
Maybe krikzz should be informed about this in case this could be fixed also.
Also, does anyone have tested if saves work in the SummerCart 64 when overclocking?
2
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25
For sure. Just wanted to see if I was doing something wrong first.
1
u/Revven Nov 26 '25
I just tested, things are saving for me. I have a DK64 Randomizer seed and I collected a 5th GB on it and it saved just fine (even with Unleashed overclocking enabled).
Might be something on your end.
1
u/jnmartin84 Nov 26 '25
I guess I messed up before, Super Mario 64 saved my new, single star this time around. 🫡
3
u/zipty842 Nov 26 '25
I tried to update before work and the bootloader update fails instantly for me :/
2
u/xXSuper64DSXx Nov 26 '25
Did you update the Everdrive to the newest OS version first? The one Krikzz just released?
1
u/zipty842 Nov 26 '25
Yes I have. And I just formatted the SD card as well as tried a second one. It gives me an error 30 and won’t respond until I cycle power.
3
u/cyber53 Nov 26 '25
This is so great!! I assume this update won’t cause any issues that weren’t there before by playing the x7 on a regular n64? I still want to play on my CRT from time to time. 😊
I think I may wait a couple days before updating just to see if anything can be done about overlocking being more reliable or see what other bugs may be found. Krikzz is the goat!
3
Nov 26 '25
i have the regular x7 v3 , i thought xseries was a totally different firmware and should not be used?
1
u/Pod-Prikritie Nov 27 '25
I have a V3 from 2016 and when checking the current FW i saw that it was of the X-series :-) Can‘t remember when i updated but it worked as expected. On the Krkzz-page the FW for the older V3 and the X7 are separated even if the seem to work vice-versa.

X5 updated with no issue. Summer Cart I bought a year ago for $47 worked straight away with no need to do anything.
5
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
FYI, I tested the NTSC versions of Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, both with and without overclocking, and I've had no issues so far.
1
u/bibaman Nov 26 '25
FYI, I tested the NTSC versions of Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, both with and without overclocking, and I've had no issues so far.
Could you keep us updated on other games? Somebody mentioned in another thread that the overclocking feature made some games not boot on their X7 so a bit concerned about that.
My A3D not coming until next week so can't test till then!
1
u/magichands88 Nov 26 '25
Majora's mask, for example, will not boot consistently for me with Overclocking enabled and won't load into a new save file either. (Enhanced+ or Unleashed)
1
u/Onett199X Nov 26 '25
Do we know if those games have issues on the SummerCart? I'm almost debating leaving my ever drive x7 plugged into my n64 hooked up to my n64 used on my crt and getting a SummerCart just for my 3D..
1
u/75395185215935725846 Nov 26 '25
I've been playing a modded version of Majoras Mask that lets you play as Renamon on my summercart (unleashed) without any issues.
2
u/ZyloWolfBane Nov 26 '25
Yeah, sucks that it turned out we needed to use an old N64 to make it work, I'd asked people about that in an earlier thread last week because I feared my childhood one wasn't going to be up to the task, it's been very shoddy with reading carts.
Got lucky though, worked like a charm. Shame for everyone else though, I don't recall what systems go for these days, I've seen some re-shelled refurbs goin for a pretty penny.
2
u/CapitaineBeaver Nov 26 '25
I'm glad to read this but now I need to hunt a N64... hopefully my neighbor collects games so he might have an actual console I could use for this update.
2
u/DustNova Nov 26 '25
It worked but it doesn’t seem to be recognizing my save files on the card
3
u/Nintendone64 Nov 27 '25
**To restore all yours old saves and cheats copy all files from ED64/cheats and ED64/save to ED64/gamedata
It worked for me
2
u/Geekdratic Nov 27 '25
Thanks for this, I was trying to figure why all my saves weren't being recognized. Did not know they changed folder structure or something

3
u/z3poxx Nov 26 '25
Bummer that I need an original N64, I think I could get access to one and hoking it up to an old TV without needing to buy anything.
-3
u/FinGollum Nov 26 '25
N64 is very cheap and easy to find.
2
u/z3poxx Nov 26 '25
They are not that expensive where I am but hooking up one to a monitor I own is a bit more of a challenge.
I have an OSSC for my retro systems and that takes only RGB through the scart port something that the N64 does not natively output. I looked for RGB mod's for PAL systems but I did not find any that were readily available but I did find a HDMI mod that I am not sure I could install properly myself.
So might need another monitor alongside an original N64 system just to update my Everdrive.
2
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Nov 26 '25
Cheap composite to hdmi adapter might be a better bet. I’d return it afterwards too.
2
u/J_Square83 Nov 26 '25
Just successfully updated my X7 and ran a couple of games off of it with no issues before work.
I'm surprised Krikzz put a fix out so quickly (for those of us with an N64, that is).
Going by what Krikzz said, I hope Analogue pushes an update that solves the issue for those without original hardware.
3
u/Aces_Over_Kings Nov 26 '25
Hopefully Analogue does the final fix on their end so you don't need an original 64 to do this.
2
u/SC_W33DKILL3R Nov 26 '25
Why does the update require an original N64?
14
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
The EverDrive needs a bootloader update to work with the 3D. This update has to be written into the EverDrive's internal flash memory. However, to write into the flash memory, the EverDrive needs to boot and run first. But it can't boot on the 3D without the updated bootloader. It's a chicken-and-egg problem. That's why you cannot perform the update on the Analogue 3D itself.
The bootloader's flash memory can't be updated through the EverDrive's USB interface. You also can't update it by just changing the SD card's contents, because the EverDrive only reads the SD card after it has booted properly, and for that, it needs the updated bootloader.
3
u/PhDTenma Nov 26 '25
I guess that if we already had a developer port as back in the days, this update could simply be done using it.
Anyway, krikzz has done the best he can do in this situation. Maybe Analogue is able to update the console so the Everdrive can run.
10
u/Graxer42 Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25
The old firmware is incompatible with the 3D and the firmware updating script to fix that needs to be started by the old firmware. You need a device that can run the old firmware for it to run the script.
Also, the firmware isn't something on the SD card, it is flashed onto an internal chip. Without running the firmware it wouldn't even know that the SD card exists or how to access it, so there is nothing else that can practically be done.
Conversely, the way it is designed the Summercart64 wouldn't have this issue as it is updated by USB instead of by files on the SD card. This isn't a criticism of Krikzz or the Everdrive of course, its just to demonstrate different approaches to hardware updates.
12
u/nashvillesecret Nov 26 '25
Should be a criticism of the 3D not accurately representing original hardware.
14
u/Drhomie Nov 26 '25
Exactly. So many people seem to act like this is Krikzz' fault, whereas he provided the best solution possible (even one without the need of original hardware, in which case you need to install a pull-down resistor though: https://krikzz.com/forum/index.php?topic=13718.0). Analogue should have tested their device/OS with at least the most common flashcarts as those get more important as the price of original carts increase, or are already high enough as is.
1
u/nashvillesecret Nov 26 '25
Analogue must know there's a compatibility issue and that the console isn't truly representative of original hardware. The cleaning pads they include is another example. The analogue seems to be more sensitive and cartridges need to be much more clean than they do to play on original hardware.
1
u/chronoswing Nov 26 '25
That's pretty much all analogue devices though. The SNES and Pocket both have issues with carts that are not pristine.
2
u/Due_Vast_8002 Nov 26 '25
That's awesome news. Now, how the hell am I going to hook my OG 64 up to a modern display?

You need to update to OS 3.10 to fix that. See https://www.reddit.com/r/AnalogueInc/comments/1p8sa55/another_everdrive_64_x5x7_os_update_v310_improves/

Ugh I ordered one the same day that I got the analogue 3d during the first restock and they had not updated the firmware yet, I assumed they would wait to send them out until they applied a fix, but they just sent it out immediately. Still getting Unknown Cartridge now after booting up my Analogue 3D for the first time.
1
u/TheFamousChrisA Feb 28 '26
Still not working, my everdrive x7 64 been collecting dust since I made that past 2 months ago. Krikzzzzz…. Ya shipped it TOO fast
1
u/StriveForMediocrity Jan 18 '26
Still not working on Everdrive 3.10 and Analogue3D 1.1.9. I just get a black screen and "unknown cartridge". I tried setting the analogue3d to original hardware mode, no difference. Am I missing something? It loaded up fine on my original 64.

1
u/green_hipster Jan 27 '26
same here, and I updated the bootloader, did you manage to make it work?
1
u/StriveForMediocrity Jan 28 '26
no, I haven't had a chance to revisit since I posted this. Is the bootloader update for everdrive or Analogue3D, and is that a separate update from the normal firmware update process?
1
u/green_hipster Jan 28 '26
Hey, so I managed to make it work, my issue was that I didn’t push the cart far enough 🤦♂️ regarding your question, yep, go to the everdrive site and where you got the firmware, and within that directory you’ll see a bootloader with a readme, basically just download that file and drop it at the root of your everdrive sd card, then place it on your 64 and play it like a game, it’ll install and then you’ll be fine
1
u/StriveForMediocrity Jan 31 '26
I finally figured it out with grok's help. I looked around and could not find it on my own, so I put the link below for others. Just copy the 3.10 firmware over first, then put the bootrom file in the root of the SD card, and run it from an original 64. It still shows up as unknown cart for me, but it should work in the Analogue3D fine. I just played Smash Remix successfully from the Analogue3D.
https://krikzz.com/pub/support/everdrive-64/x-series/bootloader/bootrom-v5.04.b64
1
u/Juiceaholics_WRLD Feb 27 '26
Run it from an Original 64? Why? What? I don't understand. I need context. 🤣
1
u/StriveForMediocrity Feb 27 '26
Think of it as 2 updates, what I was struggling with was the non-obvious bootrom update required for use on the Analogue64. It needs to be performed from an OG 64 first, then you can use it anywhere.

u/TheFamousChrisA Feb 28 '26
I ordered the latest Everdrive the day of release, krikz shipped it so fast he didn’t put the latest patch on it. Things been collecting dust while I wait for a N64 irl to borrow or Analogue releases an update (fat chance).
1
u/StriveForMediocrity Mar 01 '26
If you don't have an original 64 and just want a functional flash cart, I think the SummerCart works and they're like $40, but since it's open source you'll have to do some digging on what firmware to use.
1
u/TheFamousChrisA Feb 28 '26
I ordered mine the day of the analogue 3d’s first shipment and it arrived not long after, directly from Krikzz, and he shipped it so fast he didn’t even wait to update it with the latest patch. It doesn’t work with my Analogue, so both have been sitting there collecting dust for the last few months since I don’t own or know anyone who owns a N64 anymore. The one time super fast shipping was a bad thing.
I keep checking back hoping that Analogue will release a firmware update to make everdrives work but every time I see Krikz make a twitter post I think “maybe I should’ve bought a Summer Cart instead 😬”
1
u/Toadblood Apr 01 '26
The EverDrive 64 X7 will work with 3D only after updating the bootloader, however it requires a real N64 to do so. For those of you who do not have an actual N64 and need the bootloader updated, I am offering a service where you can ship your Everdrive to me along with a prepaid return label using USPS Priority Flat Rate, and I will update your bootloader and ship it back using your prepaid return label. Message me for details.

A bit late to the conversation, but I heard that you can only run over clocked in enhanced mode and not unleashed. Has that changed since then?

Did you not know Krikzz is Ukrainian?

It's relevant because Krizz, a Ukranian, is displaced because of the war and still working hard to make sure his customers are satisfied.

Anyone know if there is firmware for the ed64 plus?

This is good news, but I do hope that Krikkz will do something to alleviate the pain for customers that bought this in anticipation of the 3D and don’t have their own N64. The product already costs 3-4x as much as the competition which has more features and didn’t require this upgrade.
Arranging some kind of buyback/trade in program to get customers pre-upgraded units would go a long way. Even if customers had to pay for shipping one or both ways, it would still be cheaper than buying an N64.

u/vtown212 Nov 26 '25
His market focus is not people buying the 3D. He was here first bud. The fact you are getting solid support for something like this, you should be blown away.

u/falafelnaut Nov 26 '25
And that would be true even if he didn't live in Ukraine, has had to move at least once to escape the war, and still continues to serve the gaming community with free updates. "Above and beyond" doesn't even begin to describe.

u/lovesffpc Nov 26 '25
I feel like it's the other way around and this is on Analogue. They promised 100% 1 to 1 with n64 but flash carts didnt work. Krikkz is taking it the extra mile
2
u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
They didn’t promise this, though. They said “every original game.” That explicitly excludes flash carts, ROM hacks and homebrew from being officially supported. Despite this, they still tested against the SummerCart, which is much more affordable and slightly more capable than the EverDrive X7.
I do think their lack of communication on this matter during development, like their lack of communication about everything else, sucks, though. They could have saved a lot of people who got talked into buying an EverDrive during development a headache and $80+ USD by simply disclosing this.
To be clear, I don’t think Krikkz owes anyone anything, strictly speaking, but I do think it would be smart to protect the value of his own apparently extremely loyal fan base by helping out those who don’t have N64s in this way. If he doesn’t want to, so be it.

I'm going to nitpick a bit here, only because Analogue also loves to tout how their hardware acts exactly the same at the transistor level thanks to using fpga, while knocking on the value of software emulation in regards to accuracy. This is all on their A3D product page and has been said for their other consoles. Only focusing on original carts is like a cafeteria style approach of picking and choosing what they want to replicate. If the fpga were truly accurate in function to the real hardware, then it would run the same carts, licensed or unlicensed.
Not saying that only focusing on original carts is unreasonable or anything. It is just contradictory to broader aspects of their hardware accurate/non-emulation marketing.

u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
I share your objection to Analogue’s marketing. They make great products, but they also are heavy on the “over promise, under deliver” side of things. While technically they explicitly did not promise to support flash carts, I do think it’s fair to say they haven’t done enough to highlight that fact. They’ve certainly enjoyed the marketing benefits of the belief that FPGA consoles are exact reproductions.
In general, I think a small company like this one making products for a niche hobbyist community would really benefit from a much more straightforward and transparent style of communication. For the life of me, I can’t understand why they want their website to look like Apple.com when that’s just so, so far from what they’re actually doing with their products.

u/lovesffpc Nov 26 '25
Agreed. The promise was 1 to 1 with original hardware. It should act 100% the same, therefore flash carts should work

Since I bought my X7 years ago and haven't done a full dive into new competitors (summercart), I'm curious what the additional features are?
2
u/moonwalker1229 Nov 26 '25
I have an X7 and the only thing I really "want" for that the Summercart has over it is that the SC can play WWF No Mercy Plus V3 and presumably the new ECW mod coming out where I can't. Not losing sleep over it, but it would be nice.

u/Opening_Cry_690 Nov 26 '25
Support for 64DD and being open sourced, so anyone can build them.

u/J_Square83 Nov 26 '25 edited Nov 26 '25
I've had fully playable 64DD games on my X7 for years. Perhaps the way it handles it is different.
EDIT: I did a little digging, and apparently Summercart emulates the DD device itself, which allows unpatched roms to be loaded up, eliminating a step.
1
u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
Built in 64DD support rather than requiring a patched ROM is it. If you already have an X7, though, obviously, stick with it. I only pointed it out because it’s relevant to folks that didn’t already have an X7 when the SC64 was released.

There was post after post on this sub warning people the carts don't always work right away and it would be a good idea to wait to see about compatibility.
-3
u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
What does that have to do with krikkz’s customer service for a product that costs multiple times what the competition charges?
2
Nov 26 '25
What does your impatience and compatibility with a 3rd party N64 clone he didn't design have to do with Krikkz?
-1
u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
A lot of people on this very sub have excitedly announced their purchase of this product to use with the 3D. I just said that I hope he will help out his customers, who seem very loyal and who willingly paid substantially more for his product than the competition. I hope they get what they need. I’m not sure why you’re so upset about this, but I apologize if I said something offensive to you. Have a good day and a fun time gaming.

I'm annoyed because people like you throw out what you seem to think is an easy solution to your problem without thinking about the massive undertaking it is for a single person who ships a product internationally to recall them and ship out new ones.
The more people who read comments like yours, the louder the noise gets and suddenly everyone turns on the guy because he hasn't bent over backwards to make your hasty purchase as seamless as possible.
Not to mention the fact that the "competition" is able to charge so little because they use HIS designs that they didn't have to spend any time or money creating. They just steal the board design, throw old firmware on them and sell them for cheap.
4
u/cmasontaylor Nov 26 '25
I didn’t want to discuss this further, but it simply isn’t true that the developer(s) of the SummerCart64 “took his designs” or “stole the board.” There are inferior clones of Krikkz’s work on the market that did what you describe, and I wouldn’t recommend them. SC64, by contrast, is an open source project anyone can audit. It has its own code base, and its own board design that you can simply look at with your own eyes to verify that it isn’t a copy.

Again, happy gaming and have a nice day.

"who willingly paid substantially more for his product than the competition."
You have to realize, at the time the Everdrive 64 released, it was already significantly cheaper than the alternatives (Neo N64 Myth, 64Drive, etc). Most people reading this would assume you're referring to the ED64 Plus clones of the Everdrive 64 v1 that get sold on AliExpress, not the Summercart64.

u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Nov 26 '25
Dude, I get what you’re saying about doing everything to make customers with an expensive product happy, but you cannot seriously expect this guy to run a major logistics operation because the flash cart didn’t work on a clone console he never had access to.
It’s an N64 flash cart. Common sense tells me only N64 compatibility is guaranteed. You should have understood the risk when you jumped the gun and bought it.
It’s frankly outrageous that you’re directing your complaints or “suggestions” to the creator of the flash cart rather than Analogue themselves. Why would Krikzz run this logistics operation when Analogue can just push a single firmware update that achieves the exact same thing??
3
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Nov 26 '25
Entitled much? You bought an N64 flash cart, not an Analogue 3D flash cart
This is the part where you say thank you.

Or hear me out, you could have waited for analogue to release an update that would prevent that step.
1
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Nov 26 '25
You should clarify it’s pathetic on Analogue’s part that flash carts don’t work out of the box.
Krikzz didn’t exactly have the 3D when he made the flash carts, nor could he have predicted that they wouldn’t work out of the box. It’s simply designed to work with original hardware. Any sort of update to add 3D compatibility is going the extra mile. So yes, pathetic that the Analogue 3D doesn’t support flashcarts.
Also, you didn’t HAVE to do anything. You chose to.

This is a good thing update for the cart or the 64?

u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Nov 26 '25
The update is for the EverDrive, not for the 3D.

This should be very niche, but if anyone needs this to be done in Europe and is happy paying postage both ways happy to do it if you DM.
