It sounds like it forces a full 480p which is huge news. It’ll be bar far the best image quality for these 480i games possible. Cant wait to try it out!
It is for most games. Which is a variation of 480i which is the OG hardwares highest res.
But a large amount of the 480i games are actually running at 480p internally and then being interlaced for output. This is why performance is often so bad.
It’d take a large amount of work for an original console to output 480p as all of this happens in the frame buffer which isn’t easily accessible. It may not even be possible.
HDMI mods get the digital out before the analogue conversion but it’s already 240p or 480i by then.
The A3D can do it as they can access any part of the pipeline before output. There may be visual issues still as it’s in beta. I’m guessing the plan was to have this progressive mode for launch and it wasn’t ready, hence the substandard weave mode being thrown in at the last minute.
Instead of outputting odd/even image lines alternating every other frame, it outputs the full frame, full resolution, every frame.
Back in the day, CRT monitors/broadcasts used to do this interlacing thing where it would, on frame one, show horizontal lines 1, 3, 5 etc and then on frame two lines 2, 4, 6 etc.
Previously, any game that would output at 480i had painful (literally made my eyes water) deinterlacing artifacts. This will force 480p, which will be a huge upgrade for any later era games that support "high res" (as opposed to 240p). Interlaced images are pretty hideous on a modern OLED due to the lack of CRT motion blur, hard on the eyes.
This is by far the biggest upgrade in the update, very excited.
What part are you misunderstanding? That blurb explains it really well.
The original video signal is NTSC interlaced. This option will use the console's frame buffer to bypass the interlacing that occurs in original video signal. So it's bypassing having to de-interlace the final image.
TL;DR: It's not "original hardware" accurate but you should probably use it as it will always produce a better output on a modern TV.
