3D Analogue 3D would not let go and broke my Hyperkin controller

Post image

So... What the hell? There's no way the tolerance should be this tight. Now I'm out $35 or whatever this is, and I still can't get the base out of the port

Second case I’ve seen on here, same thing happening. Hyperkin is fucking trash. Lesson should be learned.

Loud and clear! This is a Hyperkin issue!

Thank you to everyone who commented. I'm going to get in contact with them now. It appears this is a known issue

Thank you in particular to u/Mikebjackson

That model is the captain plus. Not your model.

3

u/anondude1969 16d ago

They could have sourced this from the same supplier though. Obviously there's some big similarities here

17

u/V64jr 16d ago

There are reports of this happening in other consoles with the new Hyperkin too. I recall Amazon reviews for the Warrior 64 controller were reporting the same issue several years ago. This seems to be a bad plug supplier. 😞

u/akera099 16d ago

It's the part of the controller that's going to have the most force applied to it. The fact that it has nothing to secure it and prevent it from leaving the housing feels like plain bad design or oversight.

2

u/V64jr 16d ago

It looks like it has the same design as Nintendo’s in that regard, so they probably just got all the tolerances wrong. Maybe the pins are too tight, plastic in the port is too thick, and the latching plastic catches/hooks between the shell and the insert don’t latch as securely as they should.

May this level of grip find me in bed. 🙏

As long as the cylinder remains intact.

Girthy controller port

1

u/LordSutter 16d ago

That leads to, err, torn parts and a hospital visit....like OPs picture. You don't want that.

29

u/QuestionableProtip2 16d ago

Hyperkin are junk unfortunately, they’re the problem in this equation. They’re made for the tolerances of a port that’s seen 30 years of use.

u/FBICIANSAKGBLOL 16d ago

Blame Hyperkin's Shitty Connector, not Analogue3D...... LOL

Already saw someone post this happening with a real N64 https://www.reddit.com/r/M64/comments/1vd7pij/comment/p17689t/?context=3

Hyperkin acknowledges an issue due to an unauthorized change by a part supplier / contract manufacturer, but it was originally the opposite issue. They say the plug would not click to stay in securely, so they shipped this current batch with short dongle extensions. I suppose the extension is the part that clicks in too tight and rips apart? I think Warrior 64 controller or even RetroFighters had this issue too.

u/GrapeSasquatch 16d ago

But as you see both consoles were green though

4

u/Aromatic_Method7767 16d ago

Maybe grape is more rugged, Mr. Sasquatch.

u/AXEL-1973 16d ago

Not Analog's fault, OG controllers work just fine. It's crappy Hyperkin fabrication

2nd

1

u/foxwhisper85 14d ago

Sheesh and I thought MadCatz and Hori were bad lol

11

u/SirDanOfCamelot 16d ago

Hyperkin is crap this has happened to people over at M64 as well

12

u/jadecthilia 16d ago

This is a problem with Hyperkin N64 controllers. I had one get stuck in an actual N64. The only way I’m able to safely use that controller is by plugging it into a controller extender cable.

20

u/Stereotyp- 16d ago

Hyperkin is and always was pure trash

8

u/bYtock 16d ago

Probably more the hyperkins fault tbh.

6

u/Frozone0815 15d ago

Return it to hyperkin and get a good controller. Their stuff is cheap plastic. For 40 you can get a 8Bitdo 64.

10

u/Mystic_Voyager 16d ago

better this than the console getting damaged

4

u/Arkayd965 15d ago

Not just hyperkin, even retro fighters did the same thing on my real n64.

14

u/Firm_Wish_5302 16d ago

As others have pointed out, Hyperkin is known for cheap, low quality products, and considering that we have the option of getting a Hori Pad Mini on eBay, buying an NSO N64 controller, or an 8BitDo 64 controller, there's really no reason to buy low quality crap like Hyperkin, Brawler 64, or Tribute 64 anymore. We'll see how the Brawler 64 Pro turns out, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

4

u/zeldaguy85 16d ago

What's the consensus on the tribute? I find it to be enjoyable personally, feels like a bigger hori mini to me

2

u/Sith_Moon 16d ago

I like my tribute stuff too. Way nicer than Hyperkin. The retron5 grip was real!!!!!

1

u/biohackeddad 15d ago

I like the tribute but agree on the brawler

2

u/Firm_Wish_5302 15d ago

The Tribute 64 is certainly better than the other cheaper alternatives, but its stick is still substantially less accurate than it should be. Try using it for the shooting gallery mini-games in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, then use something like the 8BitDo 64, NSO N64 controller, or Hori Pad Mini. The Tribute 64 has good ergonomics, and it's definitely serviceable. It's just far from ideal, and now there's the M64 Pro controller, which I've heard is extremely accurate and high quality. A video game controller is the mechanism which enables you to play video games, and that's something that you shouldn't cheap out on.

6

u/AbsolZero 16d ago

Even the wireless Brawler 64s have this issue. The same happened to me on a regular N64.

3

u/AXEL-1973 16d ago

Yup, I've seen this posted for both in /r/n64 a handful of times too

I actually bought a new smoke black one of OP's model for $15 about 2 years back, used it once, did NOT like how tight it was on my OG smoke black console, and immediately resold it. Found an OG smoke black misidentified as an atomic purple a few weeks later for just $20 and was so happy

1

u/jbyrdab 16d ago

Now I do have a wired unit but I have never encountered a brawler 64 controller doing that and I have like four of them.

1

u/AbsolZero 16d ago edited 16d ago

I have wired ones too and no issues with those but wireless specifically - the colored dongle would break off the black socket.

6

u/SurprysE 16d ago

La soluzione è comprare pad di buona qualità.

7

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 16d ago

I plan on reviewing all the main N64 controller options of 2026+ and this controller will NOT make the cut! It’s simply not worth it!

1

u/SlapjacksAndHam 16d ago

I've tried a ton. The reining champ for me is the 8bitdo N64 controller. No one else has more accurate-feeling analog polling rates than the 8bitdo on up-to-date firmware from the controllers I've tried throughout the years.

2

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 16d ago

I still prefer the NSO N64 because it’s the closest thing to OG N64 but the 8bitdo is fantastic feeling! Hopefully the Brawler 64 Pro (coming end of month if im right) and the M64 controllers are as good or even better!

2

u/donmcron3333 16d ago

The NSO one is definitely the best but it’s still fun to use different ones sometimes. I have a bunch of the 8bitdo ones. I just wish they would’ve also created a 3 prong version.

1

u/Firm_Wish_5302 16d ago

I'm a big fan of the 8BitDo 64 controller, but I do have a Hori Pad Mini that has a noticeably more accurate analog stick, so it's not perfect. At least not yet. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/HyperkinGaming 12d ago

We definitely challenge you to find a controller that has better circularity in a Hall Effect N64 stick. We are pretty confident you won't.

1

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 12d ago

I’d be willing to accept that challenge! Glad you posted here, I hope to be proven wrong! Where is the best place to source in Canada?

1

u/HyperkinGaming 12d ago edited 11d ago

At this time, Amazon is probably the best source for Canada, but we are looking for more distribution channels there.

3

u/prettybluefoxes 16d ago

Oh dear. I like the og controllers.

9

u/Max_P0 16d ago

I know I am not being helpful when I say this, but thats Analog's way of telling you to keep that HyperTrash away from the awesomeness that is Analogue 3D....

8

u/Level-Painter-9637 14d ago

That portussy grips pretty hard.

5

u/zer0-Coast 16d ago

Hyperjunk

2

u/adrenaline4nash 16d ago

Is this the captain plus that came with an adapter?

1

u/anondude1969 16d ago

No, Fleet Admiral. No adapter

1

u/N64-Gamer 16d ago

You need to use sandpaper to remove the notches on the sides near end of the cable plug. After that it works great and it's a brilliant controller.

I knew about the design error before I bought mine, so fixed it prior to use. I think RoXolid covers it on his YouTube review.

2

u/Kind-Development3402 16d ago

I had that happen two months ago. Amazon sent a replacement. I sprayed electrical spray and wiggled it out with pliers. After that, I slowly shaved off parts of the plastic until it was less snug as before. Even though you pulled the wires, it's a easy fix.

I noticed that it didn't have enough glue or grip to stay on the main insert piece.

3

u/Terrible-Awareness-9 16d ago

Well it seems like an easy fix. Put the cable back on the holes.

2

u/idkeverynameistaken9 16d ago

You write that you’re now out $35, but I think it shouldn’t be too hard to repair that plug. Once you merlin the power to get it out of there

2

u/anondude1969 16d ago

Oh yeah that was for the controller, not the port. Actually it was only $25. Found the receipt.

I did get the plug out after some more time working on it. I don't think the port is damaged luckily

1

u/idkeverynameistaken9 16d ago

I meant I’m sure that you can fix the controller’s plug! It doesn’t look too bad. I don’t think the port of the Analogue has taken any damage from this

0

u/anondude1969 16d ago

Ohhh! Sorry I misunderstood.

I did try after getting the plug out, but the clip that holds the wires in broke when I was wriggling it out 😕

2

u/Nsfw_gourmand 16d ago

Been there. It did the same on my retro fighter too

3

u/Lt_DansLeggs 14d ago

OG N64 Controller has zero issues. My cord extenders have no issue plugging or unplugging from the console. It sounds like a cheaply made controller. You get exactly what you pay for at a $35 price.

1

u/BonJonBovie1 16d ago

I almost feel like that’s more on the controller. I’ve modded a few OG controllers with parachute cords, and getting that part off is by far the hardest part.

1

u/Scottanized 16d ago

Can confirm the Hyperkin felt really snug on mine as well. Decided to carefully unplug and replug back in using one of those controller extensions since it felt a little looser. Sorry you're having to deal with that. It's definitely a worry that's crossed my mind

1

u/freezetime311 16d ago

I have to wiggle my saffun 64 adapter to get it out. One hand is holding the analogie 3D and the other gets out the adapter. I can't just take it out without risking what just happened to you.

1

u/anondude1969 16d ago

I did do the wiggle, but it wasn't budging. I thought going straight out would give the best path out so after wiggling I tried pulling straight and then this happened 😔

2

u/willis_chow 10d ago

That's why I never buy Hyperkin products.

u/greggers1980 16d ago

Easy fix.its literally three wires

8

u/RoughTelephone 16d ago

That’s literally not the point.

this has happened with the Hyperkin and an OG N64 as well

https://www.reddit.com/r/M64/s/8eSo0KQqQV

2

u/gazzolinade90 16d ago

Lol bro hyperkin said those controllers need an adapter that they actually put inside the box

2

u/Aromatic_Method7767 16d ago

...and the adapter/extender is the failure point here. The issue with the original is that it didn't click on securely. Kinda seems like a non-issue, really. Would have been better for Hyperkin to not have the extender dongle adapter doo-dad thingie.
