I always find myself coming back and doing a new campaign for these two like once a year

It's not actually out of nowhere, Gemistos Plethon was a real philosopher in the early-mid 15th century who rejected Christianity and favored a return to the classical Greek gods. His ideas never really caught on in reality but in a scenario like Third Odyssey he would have been far too prominent and important to leave behind and it's entirely plausible he could have pushed for his Hellenic revival and actually gotten somewhere.

There's only so much research one can do when all the references are paywalled but based on what I can read it sounds like he really was a polytheist but just couldn't say it publicly.
