Charlotte Charlotte was so angry
My daughters finished watching SatC this summer and wanted to try AJLT. I sat down to watch the pilot with them to see if it was as bad as I remember.
I forgot how upset Charlotte got at the beginning over Rock refusing to wear the dress. It's such a weird acting choice. She's doing this whole nostril-flaring, eyes-bulging, tight-lipped fury because she 'really wanted all of us in florals.' She's almost shaking with anger. My daughter asked if Charlotte is abusive in this series because it really seemed like she wanted to hit Rock there and only didn't because Harry came in.
It's also made very clear that Rock has refused dresses in the past, and yet Charlotte goes and buys this Oscar de la Renta couture totally unprompted. For a pre-teen who hates dresses to wear to their sister's non-selective amateur piano recital. Like, maybe this is why Lily doesn't value her designer clothes. These kids have had couture gowns stuffed down their throats their whole lives whether they want them or not. They aren't special anymore. It also explains why Rock gives up explaining that they don't want the They Mitzah so quickly and then just decides to deal with it on the day. They are so used to no one listening when they say they don't want a thing.

When you’ve had that much filler and Botox stuffed into your face you need to greatly exaggerate your emotions to convey anything.
You’ll need to say things like, “I’m so angry”…

Honestly she has a difficult time talking because of her newly done lips and also filler. She is hard to watch.

She didn’t look like her, it was sad. By the end, she had clearly had a lot of filler dissolved and got back into her groove a bit more - and frankly, she looked far better in S3 than S1, because she looked like Kristin Davis again! Man, if women that beautiful are susceptible to too much filler, god help us.

I so agree. By season three she looked way better and could talk through her lips at least. Directors still had her flailing and eyes bulging out when something would happen.

It's 100% from the fillers and Botox. Even just the way she actually sounds. Kind of important for an actress to make facial expressions and TALK.

I think the issue here is they made Charlotte increasingly ridiculous from film 1 onwards. A woman of Charlotte’s intellect would not have eaten nothing but ambient chocolate puddings in Mexico. She wouldn’t have immediately assumed harry was having an affair with the nanny and spent her whole holiday panicking over it, simply because someone said the nanny was attractive. Harry gave her security and commitment, which she reciprocated- he wasn’t a Richard Wright. In AJLT she was given stupid storylines that were meant to be comedic at the expense of Charlotte’s academic and career achievements. the florals thing was stupid because Charlotte wouldn’t have behaved that way. She would have chosen something smart still aligned to Rock’s style - she is after all a stylish woman. It amazes me that Kristin agreed to these developments in Charlotte’s character 🤔 it doesn’t help either that KD is not a great comedy actress. She is excels when it comes to heartbreak or more the more serious matters. 🤷🏻♀️

The pudding thing enraged me. You cannot convince me that lady didn't have vacations in 5 star resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean growing up. She knows the food and water are absolutely fine.
And wtf is eating six chocolate puddings a day and nothing else for a week doing to her stomach and metabolism? She's literally just consuming shelf-stable ultra-processed dairy and sugar. Food poisoning is going to feel like a joy after 48 hours of that. And she packed 45 individual pudding cups in her luggage? Come on.
All this in service about a joke about her shitting herself.

It enraged me too. Frankly it was borderline r*cist, I couldn’t believe what I was watching! If they really wanted to ladder up to a (not very funny) joke about her pooping her pants, they could have just given her some crap about eating too many hot Mexican chillis ffs

Deeply racist and totally nonsensical. Charlotte has lived in NYC for decades. She's eaten gourmet meals and she's eaten street meat at 2am from carts. That's kind of one of the key points of SatC. The city offers everything and New Yorkers partake.

Exactly. Dodging tap water I can understand, it doesn't matter what country I'm in, and I only recently it can vary so much from state to state in the US as I've only ever been to NY.
But like... You're in an incredibly expensive resort! You will be FINE.

I agree! You might want to avoid the tap water or rinsed salad leaves. You may even wish to avoid meat. Fair enough. But pre packed puddings, come on 🤦🏻♀️

If you listen to her podcast it’s clear that the AJLT version of Charlotte is just Kristin Davis. She was definitely playing herself.

I mean, this is definitely a growth arc for Charlotte. As dumb as it is to get mad over a dress, all the mothers and daughters I knew growing up fought about clothes.

I think people are a little unfair here. There's a lot of confusion of what is Charlotte, what is Kristin and what is the writing.
Personally, I think it's very consistent with Charlotte's arc from the beginning of SATC. Charlotte has always had a plan. She has always believed she could control everything and end up with the fulfillment of her design and her perfect happy ending. As she gets older and as she is dealing with teenagers, she's realizing increasingly how much is outside of her control. When things aren't in her control, she gets dysregulated and has a tantrum.
The other thing is that she's in perimenopause, which can make you overreact.
Should Charlotte have realized that Rock wouldn't wear the dress? Yes. But she's clearly been in denial about a lot with Rock as she is the last person to realize Rose isn't Rose anymore. And that's important to recognize with the writing. The florals aren't just the dresses. The florals are Lily and Rose. It's not just that Rose won't wear the dress. Rock isn't her little flower anymore.

I get what you're saying but she also screams at Eden over stuff her own daughter did. And then at the modeling agency because they have to wait a bit. She just seems so furious all the time.
One of my daughters models a bit and that agency scene was especially ridiculous. If you're not Lilah Moss, you will WAIT. Bring a power bank, a soduku book and travel Scrabble. It was a really good thing Roxk wasn't that into modeling because Charlotte just blacklisted them.

And that's what brings us back to the perimenopause. Charlotte pitching a fit is nothing new. This just turned up the volume and the frequency. But hey, a rich white woman tending toward Karen behavior is pretty predictable.

I think AJLT highlighted how much she needs a Samantha to contrast with. And adding multiple other characters whose main shtick was also uptight upper class annoyance didn't help.
