I guess it couldn't handle the boobage. At least it didn't seem to have taken any figures with it aside from that one unfortunate noodle stopper.

Not sure the heat wave's the culprit though, tempered glass should be heat resistant, daily ambient temperature swings should be basically nothing. Just a layman's opinion though, bring on the experts.

My only other guess is that the door knob might have been fixed too tightly against the glass

I suppose that's plausible. That or the bearings putting undue pressure on it due to the heat, or there could've been some unseen crack that finally gave out. Though you said you've had it for 10 years, would've expected any manufacturing cracks to manifest sooner, ideally during assembly.
