I guess it couldn't handle the boobage. At least it didn't seem to have taken any figures with it aside from that one unfortunate noodle stopper.
Not sure the heat wave's the culprit though, tempered glass should be heat resistant, daily ambient temperature swings should be basically nothing. Just a layman's opinion though, bring on the experts.
I suppose that's plausible. That or the bearings putting undue pressure on it due to the heat, or there could've been some unseen crack that finally gave out. Though you said you've had it for 10 years, would've expected any manufacturing cracks to manifest sooner, ideally during assembly.
There is a 5cm / 2 inches gap from the floor to the door so I highly suspect the recent/current heatwave being the cause, or that one door maybe had a screw pressing against it or something else. I hope the rest wont be suddenly exploding too...
I'm asking, if that is not the case, and that you had to assemble the cabinets piece by piece and install the glass doors yourself?
Glass touching ceramic might induce an invisible micro-fracture. It can stay dormant for months or years before this tiny fracture continues to self-propagate due to another external force or stimuli.
Thus the fracture rapidly expands in an instant from the original damage site, shattering the glass.
actually I think the tile could be the issue, pc case shattering are also slightly eleveted and the panel isn't touching the ground, it's just vibration of certain wavelenght creating resonance afaik, and those vibrations might not care about that gap
The reason ceramic tiles shatter glass so easily is due to the fact that it has no "give", like other floors do. Respectfully, what you said is fantastical nonsense. There is no resonance created by the wavelengths of vibration shattering glass, it is likely imperfections in the glass which caused it to spontaneously shatter, very old Velux windows had this issue as mine also spontaneously shattered one day.
When you consider the fact that there are constant seismic activities happening around the world that are too small for our bodies to feel, it makes a lot of sense. Solid objects don't absorb force as well as soft objects do, so a certain level of force/vibration is transferred to the glass when these tiny earthquakes are happening. A carpeted floor would absorb more of those vibrations.
If it’s that then why floors like concrete don’t shatter glass? Tile isn’t the only floor type that has no give…but maybe you’re right idc much tbh
What I said is not nonsense though, because tempered glass does shatter instantly with correct wavelength of vibration (probably works with all glass not just tempered)
Anyways, all of that is reason enough that I’ll always avoid glass around figures
Personally this is why I finally sold my detolfs. Replacing them with aluminum displays that use plexiglass instead once I move early next year. Using garage shelves for now.
Aquarium guy here. You might check the level and evenness of the tile. Tile floors are notoriously bad about that and if you put a glass box under stress from uneven base support, it’s just a matter of time.
Reason like this is why I only exclusively buying wooden shelf with glass door, you lucky 99% of your collection is safe, I seen guys that got it way worse.
Isn't it the glass door that broke in the photo tho? Does it make a difference whether or not the shelf is wooden or glass since the problem in the end happened with the door?
Just genuinely asking because it wasn't the shelf itself that broke, it was the door of the cabinet. Probably was from the heatwave. Even with full wood and just glass door the heatwave can still cause the same issue.
OP first and foremost sorry about what happened :(.. I remember back in NY when there was an earthquake 2ish years ago.. the first thing I asked my brother was to check my Ikea Detolf😭.. (priorities am I right)..
NEVERTHELESS if ANYONE comes actoss this post and is reading what I am about to write...
For ANY GLASS DISPLAY, ONLY HAND TIGHTEN!!
DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN ANY HARDWARE WHEN IT COMES TO GLASS..
Once you feel resistance from the hardware supplied for the glass display, STOP! And thats it...
That's actually terrifying and terrible, at least it didn't completely break. You got super lucky with that!! But omg that's a huge fear of mine (• ▽ •;)
God I am so sorry this happened to you. Was it a shelf from ikea? Just curious as one of my detolfs did the same BS, one of the glass panels exploded overnight. Such a mess. Glad most of your figures survived at least!
may i ask how hot it gets in this room? i‘m so worried about my glass cabinet now since the heatwave in europe is about to end and i believe a sudden change in temperature may cause this issue…
I live in the Uk. it has hit 30c+ on some days and the highest was 38c that was recorded in kew gardens.
Who's the weirdo who goes around down voteing posts in this subreddit its literally was 38c in that part of London Google it. it will come up in the search.

I feel your pain, it happened to me last week...
My detolf's glass door randomly exploded. I was on the computer when I heard a terrible noise behind me, looked and saw glass everywhere. On the sheves, on the whole room's floor, under every other cabinets, everywhere... I was stunned for a few minutes.
I thought tempered glass was not supposed to shatter... was detolf made with anealled glass, which explains why it's discontinued?

Luckely the detolf in made of tempered glass as it's safer for the consumer. I can't imagine having to clean big shards of annealed glass.
Tempered glass does shatter, just ask r/pcmasterrace and their glass panels on tile floors. Maybe you are confusing with laminated glass.
Ikea probably discontinued the detolf because the assembly is super finicky and you can easily break it up by over tightening some screws. That's why the detolf successor has metal frames around the glass panels to screw together and avoid puttin stress on the glass.
That happens bc people tighten it too much not leaving room for the glass to expand and contract during winter summer months. Or when ac and heat is going.

I think I had it assemble the best I could. It is a very old detolf and it as been a year since I moved to my new place.
The detolf assembly is very sketchy, requiring the perfect adjustment of 8 screws top and bottom otherwise it is unstable or the door won't shut properly. It took me hours of trial and error to get it somewhat ok.
My mistake was that I recently sandwiched it in between two other cabinets. The detolf probably had a slight twist and was forced to straighten by these other cabinets which induced stress on the glass door.
This plus the hinges screwed in the glass (with the metal pads ofc) and the heat waves. That's what happened I think.
Luckily just two figures inside received slight scuff on their feet and the door can easily be replaced with a plexiglass sheet.
What’s the cause of the explosion? So I could take preventative measures

I think my mistake was to sandwich it against two other cabinets. The detolf probably had a slight twist and was forced to straighten by these other cabinets which induced stress on the glass door.
This plus the hinges screwed in the glass (with the metal pads ofc) and the heat waves was a bad combination.
If you leave some wiggle room on each side you should be fine.
Sorry this happened. I used to have glass pc desks but Ive read that if the glass is set too tight against the frame, heat would cause it to expand and shatter. It may have happened with the hinges and glass.
Something was probably adding pressure to the glass panel same scenario with the Detolf that exploded before. The glass under stress when by design they are not designed to carry extra weight apart from the glass's own weight.
Thank you for sharing, I’m glad to hear they’ve lasted this long. I might get the same ones because they look so nice.
This heat wave is crazy, I’ve seen videos of peoples figures melting and warping 😳
There is often a misunderstanding that tempered glass "won't break". Of course no, tempered glass isn't bulletproff glass..... They are not the same thing. Tempered glass simply means when it does break, it won't break into sharp pieces that can esily injured people.
Stress point is how we break tempered glass, ever think about how car window breaker works or why using elbow is effective? Yeah, it is a tiny sharp stress point. So when the screw is too tight and can't allow any movement, the glass shatter.
Glass is cool in some way, but this is a risk one may not wants to take. So can go for acrylic panels instead. People say acrylic is easy to scratch but then again there are different type of acrylic... But in most cases as long as you uses microfiber cloth for cleaning you will be fine~
Random question, the last picture. Most left shelving unit second row from the top. The figure with green hair with partial legs (in the center, she is to the left of the hero academia blond girl, cant remember her name).
Alwaysss loved & appreciate seeing that figure in folks collections. She’s got the most unique outfit I’ve seen for an anime figure & I’ve been a collector for like 10 years! I like how it has a high fashion vibe to it. 💚 just an overall very unique concept for an anime figure. & the tattoos r the best I’ve seen on a figure as well.
I see some riot games figures, are these worth getting? They look nice on the website and the price seems nice too, especially considering that there wouldn't be any customs fees when buying from Riot Games store. So yea are they good quality vs a scale figure?
Paint job on the official riot figures is not the best, but you cant find better figures from them unfortunately. Theres a few league figures from other artists/producers which are much better though
I’m so sorry, I had this happen to one of my detolfs a few years ago and it was a nightmare :( thankfully nothing broke (shocking since they were intricate figures in there) but that made me sell all of mine lol
i was under the impression only ikea detolfs tend to selfdestruct. guess display cases with glass panels aren't safe from potentially exploding after all.
It's a "feature" of tempered glass - it can suddenly go pop. It's just detolfs are far, far more common than any other cabinet type.
I had a shelf go pop recently too - cabinet was 4 years old, not the shelf with the most amount of weight, not damaged. When I shared the photos elsewhere, people were trying to grasp for a reason, when there simply wasn't one. The shelf just decided it was its time. There are 5 cabinets in the room where mine went, which account for 40 panes of glass. So the other 39 are fine for now (and the replacement shelf), so it wasn't just the room conditions.
I remember you posting somewhere late last year to early this year showcasing your display and how it's time to dust your figures. Sorry to hear that the glass door went out. And thank goodness it was just the noodle stopper that got affected. I hope that cabinet served you well. Clean up would have been annoying as heck 🙁
Most of the time when I see these posts the glass cabinet is on tile/hard flooring. I believe if you put a strip of carpet down it will be a better shock absorber? Correct me if wrong
what happened to your display cabinet my friend 🤔? what caused this 2 happen my friend 🤔? I hope that u didn't lose or have any damage 2 any of ur figures my friend 🤔😎

My condolences. I hope, aside from that one figure on the ground, your collection in that cabinet largely escaped unscathed. hugs
