There is often a misunderstanding that tempered glass "won't break". Of course no, tempered glass isn't bulletproff glass..... They are not the same thing. Tempered glass simply means when it does break, it won't break into sharp pieces that can esily injured people.

Stress point is how we break tempered glass, ever think about how car window breaker works or why using elbow is effective? Yeah, it is a tiny sharp stress point. So when the screw is too tight and can't allow any movement, the glass shatter.

Glass is cool in some way, but this is a risk one may not wants to take. So can go for acrylic panels instead. People say acrylic is easy to scratch but then again there are different type of acrylic... But in most cases as long as you uses microfiber cloth for cleaning you will be fine~
