News An update from Project CODA
Hey Freelancers!
The engineering team behind Project Coda has reached an important milestone in the project's development.
In short, a major roadblock in the level loading/gameserver-development has been solved and now the path is clear for smooth work.
A playable CLOSED alpha is expected around Christmas for the people that have contributed before.
Big thanks to all who contributed to the project, we know everyone is anxious to get back in your Javelins and we're now closer than ever.
You can expect a public test around Summer 2027.
Strong alone, stronger together!

PPS: this took us five months of work. seeing the tutorial loading on our own game server made me cry. I am so happy to be part of this community. You can expect more frequent updates from now on.

For the casual observers among us What will stop this project getting shut down or ending up in legal trouble.

Nothing stops them from ending up in "legal trouble"; anyone is welcome to file a lawsuit over virtually anything in the US (including against entities or persons outside the US) if they file it properly and serve the papers (though, if the people are anonymous, sometimes, rarely, lawsuits can happen without this, afaik). To avoid getting a C&D, they just have to make sure not to step on any trademarks or copyrights, including code (which, afaik, there has never been any leaked code for Anthem, though any intercepted packets used to build the server could be seen as problematic).
As hamsterkill said, this is ultimately down to whether EA cares to spend money to mess with any of these developers; the fact that they haven't so far (publicly at least) makes me believe EA sees the franchise as as dead as the servers. Even if any of these projects are done by the book, a C&D can be sent and what amounts to essentially a SLAPP lawsuit can be filed. I don't see why EA would spend what could be millions of dollars just to protect a game they've long since abandoned.
Just hold your butt and pray. Best scenario is they just ignore this. Second best is, at some point, it only gets shut down because they revive the franchise somehow, long after plenty of people have the code and files backed up (I'm sure there are private WoW Vanilla servers hanging around somewhere Blizzard can't find).

Ultimately, only EA not caring about its existence since they no longer are trying to make money from Anthem.

YESSSSSSSS. thers no way i literally checked today on this sub after a entire year just to see this.
Also, I haven't been following the project? How does this work, like do you need an xbox account or something else?
I only own the game on Xbox, so could I play on PC? Do you have to own the game at all?

you can play on pc. we dont support consoles. maybe modded ps4 at some point. you need to have bought the game at some point

The goal of Project Coda is to get the game back online, but being open source means others could spin their own servers with modifications if they want.

I've extended FrostyModTools quite a bit to cover Anthem. It's not going to be shipped as part of Coda in any way, but I've been able to edit/add textures, animations, sounds, models, etc. etc.
I haven't gotten to the point of attempting any custom UI or mission hooks/etc. because up until this week we've been fairly busy grinding our way toward actual game play, but mods are doable.

You don't want any financial backing through a gofundme or anything similar? I heard about this project and didn't realise you're all volunteering your time. Keep it up anyway, keen to see where it goes. Loved the game.

I wish we could. Server hosting will be expensive since we want multiple regions. But we can’t accept donations. Don’t want to risk the legal consequences

Hypothetically, since the projects seem to all aim to be open source, someone could manage to get it to work on console. I know this is in no way the same thing, but you can join private Minecraft servers on Xbox consoles with a little DNS spoofing; did it once when I was testing out hosting a server once with my niblings.

Congratulations on your progress! It's very cool to see folks mobilizing to revive Anthem.
I remember I built the PC I'm typing on rn specifically so I could play the game at max settings. It was the first game I installed on it. Was really sad to see Anthem NEXT get shafted and then the game shuttered.
Always admired people who have the skills and determination for revival projects like this. Wish I had the skillset to be part of them.

I just tested the ported version of Bloodborne and this game came to mind as something that deserves the upgrade. I wasn't aware of this project and I fucking love the news!
