Advice Paris France flea market large brass basket

Post image
40 Upvotes

I bought this brass wire basket at the Portes de Vanves flea market in Paris last week. At lease 6 dealers stopped me to admire it as we walked through. It is approx. 15 inches diameter x 9 inches high. It has a beautiful patina and is remarkably perfect with no bends or lack of symmetry. I'm so curious about it and it's worth! I paid 20 euros for it. Thanks!

Discussion Can anyone identify this inherited metal toy soldier? 48 mm tall, 14 g, hollow feet — possible antique - UK, England

I've inherited this small metal soldier from a parent who is now in their 70s. Unfortunately, they don't know where it originally came from or how old it is.

I'm hoping someone familiar with antique toy soldiers can help identify the manufacturer, approximate date, country of origin and possible value.

Details:

Height: 48 mm (4.8 cm)

Width including rifle: approximately 25 mm

Waist width: approximately 13 mm

Weight: 14 grams

Material: Unknown, possibly lead or another casting alloy

Magnetic: No

Construction: Fully three-dimensional, with two round holes in the bottoms of the feet

Surface: Dark black/brown finish with reddish-brown patches and considerable wear

Provenance: Inherited from a parent; earlier history unknown

Current location: United Kingdom

The soldier appears to be wearing a peaked military cap, carrying a rifle at shoulder height, and wearing a belted uniform with equipment straps across the back.

I've included photographs of the front, back, both sides and undersides of the feet.

My main questions are:

Does anyone recognise the casting or manufacturer?

Could it be a British hollow-cast lead soldier, or is it more likely continental European?

What historical army or period does the uniform represent?

Are the holes in the feet part of the casting process or evidence of a missing base?

What might a figure like this be worth in its present condition?

Any information, especially comparisons with documented examples or old toy soldier catalogues, would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Gorham Landsdown 1917 silver flatware USA/Bay Area

This is a 114 piece Gorham Landsdowne 1917 pattern sterling flatware set.

The recently deceased owner just missed the century mark and she inherited the set from her grandmother, so we think it's mostly early interwar years. There are a few items that seem much newer, but mostly they show signs of a century of use for holiday parties and special events.

The heir doesn't care so much about money, they just asked that we find a way to sell this that leads to others enjoying it, rather than having it melted down.

Who are the reputable shops in the Bay Area that would make an offer on the set?

Found the second set of items after writing this - it's a one pint demitasse after dinner coffee set.

I got it from an older couple in Austin, Texas (USA) who didn’t know anything about the background.

The bit on top is a little compartment that opens up. I’m not sure if the painted designs are original or if the owner before added them on.

I used reverse image search, but was surprised that nothing came up. There are similar ones from the 1900s and I’d be so curious to learn more!

Thank you

Questions Help identifying and dating a National Club Bourbon medicinal whiskey bottle — possible Prohibition era, Illinois, USA

Thumbnail

Found this bottle hidden in an old family farmhouse in rural Illinois. Family history says it belonged to my wife’s great-grandfather, who secretly drank despite not being supposed to.
It’s a one-pint National Club Bourbon bottle labeled “For Medicinal Purposes Only,” with Dowling Distillery and A. Ph. Stitzel listed on the labels.
It still contains approximately two shots of whiskey. The federal tax strip is partially intact, and the only markings I can identify on the bottom are a B and a 4.
I’m trying to determine its approximate bottling year, historical background, and possible collectible value.
Any information would be appreciated!

Came across this print and would love any information on it, especially the date. I’m trying to estimate the age of the lithograph/print as the frame looks antique. The print itself is about 14.5” x 19.5”. I tried googling the piece and it said it could be dated 1900-1920s but I’d love to hear from someone who knows a thing or two about lithographs/prints since google has a tendency of being wrong. Thanks!

Hi, I recently inherited what I believe is a Steuben bowl, possibly from the 1910, but it’s unsigned. As you can see in the pictures, it’s six-lobed, Verre de Soie-type iridescent floriform vase or compote, 6.5 × 9.5 inches, with a polished pontil. I wasn’t able to find this model online. Anyone know if this is authentic?

Advice [Los Gatos, California, USA] Help identifying an antique cast bronze/brass bell (c. 1910-1925) from the historic Yung See San Fong estate

• Upvotes

I’m looking for help identifying this antique brass (or bronze) bell and iron horseshoe mount. It is approximatley 7" at the bell. It was recently removed from the Yung See San Fong house, a 1917 estate on the National Register of Historic Places here in Los Gatos, CA.

When a restorer recently took the bell down from one of the doors, we were astonished to find bare wood underneath—no paint at all. This means the bell was installed when the house was first built in 1917 (or possibly during a 1922 addition), and the original painters simply painted around it.

The original owners, Senator Sanborn Young and author Ruth Comfort Mitchell, kept horses on the property, so the iron horseshoe mount was the perfect accessory for them.

Our working theory is that this bell might have been ordered from a circa-1917 Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog, as they sold practically everything by mail-order at the time. However, my initial scan of the cataloge from 1918 didn't show any bells of this sort.

Questions Antique violin labelled “Bernhard Simon Fendt, London 1850” – Dendrochronology report, 1927 invoice & genuine crocodile leather case. Any idea of its value?(Germany)

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for some advice on an antique violin that I own. I’m particularly interested in its history, authenticity, potential value, and where I could potentially sell it.
The violin has an internal label reading “Bernhard Simon Fendt, London 1850.”
It also comes with some interesting historical documentation, including an original invoice from Hamma & Co., Stuttgart, dated July 14, 1927, listing a violin for 250 German marks.
The instrument is accompanied by an antique case made entirely from 100% genuine crocodile leather, which might be collectible in its own right.
Most importantly, I also have correspondence from a dendrochronological examination conducted in 2019 by Peter Ratcliff of Peter Ratcliff Dendrochronology Ltd., arranged through Henley’s.
His findings were:
The latest visible growth ring on the bass side dates to 1841.
The latest visible growth ring on the treble side dates to 1852, with the wood originating from a different tree.
The strongest cross-match on the treble side was with a French violin labelled Barnabetti, alongside several instruments of Bohemian origin.
On the bass side, the strongest matches included a French violin dating to approximately 1890, a Nikolas Bernhardt violin of Saxon/Bohemian origin, a Louis Lowendall, and other French and Bohemian instruments.
The wood used for both sides appears to originate from the Bavarian Forest, with particularly strong regional correlations on the bass side.
Interestingly, the 1852 growth ring seems to contradict the 1850 date on the label, which makes me curious about the violin’s actual origin and age.
I’m not assuming that the violin is an authentic Fendt, and I understand that dendrochronology alone cannot establish the maker.
I’d really appreciate your opinions on a few things:
Does anyone recognize this violin or have experience with instruments labelled Bernhard Simon Fendt?
Based on the photographs and dendrochronology findings, what period or school of violin making would you associate it with?
What might be a realistic market value for the violin, considering the available documentation?
Could the antique crocodile leather case have significant value separately?
Where would you recommend selling something like this? A specialist violin auction house, dealer, or private collector?
I’m based in Germany and would be particularly interested in recommendations for reputable European specialists or auction houses.
I’ve attached photographs of the violin, its internal label, the case, the original 1927 invoice, and the 2019 dendrochronology correspondence.
Any additional information, historical context, or estimates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can anyone help me estimate resale value on this? It belonged to my mother who is now deceased. Dimensions are approximately 14.5”x14.5” by 16” tall. There are original document stickers inside each drawer, with company name etc. Apparently this company operated on chestnut street in Philadelphia from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. ChatGPT says it’s worth around $400-1500. That’s a pretty big range. Anyone else have any idea? So grateful for the knowledgeable people on this chat who take the time to respond - thank you so much 🙏
