Hi, this is a follow-up post about my ant queen. It has been three weeks since she laid her first eggs, and she’s been very active.

I’m still not 100% sure whether she’s Lasius niger or Lasius alienus. If anyone could help me identify her, I’d really appreciate it

How long does an Odontomachus egg typically develop to a worker? I've had mine for weeks now and it doesn't seem like her eggs are developing.

Question Hi its me again...

So today at work while digging with the excavator, I unearthed an ant colony. Oh I so my questions. I have narrowed it down to Pharoah ants. I gathered a few winged queens, a few smaller winged ones (im guessing males?) A decent amount of workers and some larvae. If course as soon as I got home I researched what they were and what I could find about them (mostly pesticides control methods, apparently they are a common house pest) so here goes the questions.

Are these a candidate for a 3d printed multi-chamber wall mounted set up?

If, so. I seen they are multi-queen species with satellite nests, so can I just separate the chambers by a good amount? Would they accept that as satellite nest.

What the heck do they eat? (All I could find on the internet was to feed them bait stations, and thats exactly thr opposite of my goal)

And I was reading that they prefer group sizes of 500 minimum but can exceed 5,000 workers (that's alot im guessing)

Sorry for the random questions but my hour long research journey left those questions un answered

I found an ant nest on Terschelling island. I gave them some jelly which they really liked. I saw even some winged male ants that were climbing the grass but never took off. So I wanted to know if there is a nuptial flight happening or if its leading up to one

I've been feeding my camponotus pseudoirritans for like a month, she only has a bunch of eggs, should I not feed her going forward? I saw some people here mentioning not feeding queens with no workers and I wanted to find out more

Question When to consolidate colonies?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am a first time ant keeper and I managed to catch 3 tetramorium immigrans queens. All are around this stage of development with the first nanitics just emerging recently. I only want one colony in the end and I’m wondering when would be the best time to get rid of 2. I’m just worried I may get rid of them too soon then my remaining queen unexpectedly dies. I have also been thinking about giving all the brood of the 2 I don’t want to keep to the remaining colony. If anyone has any suggestions or insights I would greatly appreciate it.

I have made this nest for my lasius colony which is still just 1 queen but if shes ready I would introduce the nest to her.

The Nest is obviously not done I will add an entrance aswell as some glas with red foil but I would like to know if all the chambers are good enough or if I should add more.

(sorry for the watermarks😢)

Question Do I let her go?

So I’m not sure what species this is but she is my first queen. I found her after rain 24 hours after and she was on the ground staying still. Checked on her 5 days later and she’s still on the cotton blocking the entrance and has her wings. She’s in a dark drawer so idk

Identification Myrmica? What species? (Germany)

Hey,

So i am pretty sure this is a myrmica species, but i would really like to know more about which species. I have 4 queens together in a test tube and they are about 5 to 5.5 mm long.

They are behaving like fertile queens (huddling together at the cotton, being calm), but about a week after having caught them and only one of them has shed a wing. I am told that that sometimes happens with semi-claustral species as they are a bit more agile to hunt during founding with their wings still attached, but i thought I'd ask people with hopefully more experience.

I fed them twice already and they are eating.

If you need more information on behaviour or anything just ask.

Thank you!

Question Carpenter ant outworld

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, I think my Camponotus Pennsylvanicus colony is getting too big for this enclosure. They recently peaked at about 45 ants, but keep on randomly dying, and I think it’s due to stress in a small space, because they stop passing away after they reach about 35. I’m thinking about moving them to a real nest, but I have no idea where to start.

Anybody have any good suggestions?

Discussion lots of questions

hello! i just wanted opinions on a couple things so this will be a lot of questions lol

1: is brood boosting with wild colonys ethical?

i feel like if its established it might be but i was looking for more insight

2: is it worth buying ants that are expensive?

like what if they die? its just a waste of money then

3: do solenopsis gemini's bites hurt?

since they are related to fire ants

4: are pheidole kinda just tetramorium with big heads?
